Book Morals in Evolution Vol 2

Download or read book Morals in Evolution Vol 2 written by L. T. Hobhouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morals in Evolution, Vol. 2: A Study in Comparative Ethics The spirit being thus materialized appears to enjoy an independent existence of its own. Here we touch the central contradiction of Animism. What at first appears as merely the animating principle of a material body turns out to be itself quasi-substantial and capable of existence apart from that body. We must not press Animism for a logical solution of the question how this can be, for Animism remains Animism precisely because the difficulty has not been faced. The soul of Animism is clearly a Conception formed to unify and in a manner Gxplain the visible functions and processes of the body. It underlies the sensible and material, and sets out to explain them. But it turns out to be itself just such another visible and material thing - only thinner and less palpable - a mere double of the appearances which it should explain. For the primitive mind cannot grasp an object of thought with out transforming it into an object of sense. It needs a principle, connecting things that it can see or hear, and by a confusion of categories it makes of it merely another thing that it can see and hear. Book The Evolution of Morality Vol 1

Download or read book The Evolution of Morality Vol 1 written by C. Staniland Wake and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Morality, Vol. 1: Being a History of the Development of Moral Culture The present work has been written with the object of showing how far the doctrine of "Evolution" is applicable to the field of morals. As applied to this subject, the use of the term "evolution" is intended to convey that certain principles of man's being are brought into active operation in the particular line or direction which is denoted by the phrase "moral." This direction is guided by external influences in a mode analogous to that of the development of the forces of material nature. In the latter case the determining agencies are physical, whilst in the former, social influences are those which chiefly operate. Moral Evolution is therefore the development of the principles or faculties of man's nature in response to the action of social influences, the result being what is called "morality." How far the title of the book is well chosen, the writer must leave others to judge. It is a generalized expression of the conclusion which he has sought to establish, but he is well aware that the performance has fallen far short of the intention. Book Principles of Natural and Supernatural Morals Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Natural and Supernatural Morals Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Henry Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Natural and Supernatural Morals, Vol. 2 The main purpose of the book, of which this is the second of two volumes, is to establish the thesis, that there are, not one, but three sciences of morals. There appears to be, first, a science of the motives and ends of conduct that belong to pagan or non-religious man, to man regarded simply as a voluntary agent forming part of the world of nature. There appears to be, secondly, a science which, while it includes the former, takes account also of other phenomena arising from man being brought into conscious relations with God. Of the whole body of phenomena with which this science has to do, Jewish morality may be taken as the type. And there appears to be, thirdly, a science which embraces within its scope all the phenomena of the moral life of the present day, those which are at the same time Jewish together with others which are distinctively Christian. To account on natural grounds alone for the whole of the phenomena of moral life in a Christian country appears to be impossible. And it appears to be no less impossible truly to refer them all to religious influences. In order to arrive at anything like a correct understanding of moral processes in the present day, it seems necessary to discriminate carefully between those that have their origin in the constitution of man's ordinary nature, and those that are dependent upon his being brought into personal relations with God. And it seems necessary to distinguish further between the obligations of persons who know God only in some such manner as He is known by Jews, and the obligations of persons who enter into communion with Him as members of the Christian Church. In the first volume an attempt was made to exhibit a system of natural morals complete in respect of all essential points, a system generally applicable to the case of dwellers in pagan lands. Book The Origin and Growth of the Moral Instinct Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Growth of the Moral Instinct, Vol. 2 of 2 I had prepared an elaborate chapter relating the history Of slavery among mankind, and Showing how it begins to arise as an institution at the level Of the highest savages, how it expands and reaches its most miserable phases at the highest barbarian level; how it still expands at the level Of the lower civilisation, but loses much of its atrocity how it then begins to die away, not as the result of teaching or any extraneous influence, but purely as the consequence of elimination, man as seen in a cultured community having a more sympathetic nerve reaction than man on the barbarian level. Then I had prepared a chapter on the history Of religious animosity, Showing that, in spite Of the efforts Of creeds and systems, men of all faiths have grown more tolerant. Religions generally teach a doctrine Of brotherliness and mutual help within the circle of the faith, but Of condemnation, abhor rence, or even Of extirpation beyond it. Yet, by a steady expansion of the sympathetic tendencies, a tolerant feeling in the course of long ages Spreads and embraces in an ever widening area men Of other faiths. Such a history shows emphatically how very large a proportion Of this change has belonged to the last century or two. But the principles being laid down, and so many incidents offered for their explanation and illustration, the reader may be safely left for himself to gather together such circumstances as his observation may furnish, in order to submit them to those tests with which he is here supplied. In doing this, he will forward the views of that wise and benevolent Philosopher to whom these pages owe their birth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Morality, Vol. 1 of 2: Including Polity It is true, that the difficulty of constructing a solid System of Morality may be expected to be, in some degree, great, in proportion to its great value and extensive bear ings, when once constructed. But on the other hand, this acknowledged difficulty in the task will, it may be hoped, procure some indulgence to him who undertakes it, if he perform his labour patiently, and as far as he can, consist ently. Even if he be not wholly successful, he may produce a result of which some part may have a permanent value.
