Book The Origin of Galaxies

Download or read book The Origin of Galaxies written by Jin He and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is there no dust in elliptical galaxies? Firstly, the universe is rational and the rationality is proportion at large scale systems such as galaxies. Proportion means that the distribution of matters in the universe is orderly. For example, there are four giants standing in array. Their heights are respectively A, B, C, D, and A, B stand in the first row from left to right, C, D in the second row from left to right. Proportion requires that A divided by C be equal to B divided by D. Rational structures are either circularly symmetric with respect to the center point, or bilaterally symmetric. Secondly, spiral galaxy arms are neither circularly symmetric nor bilaterally symmetric. Therefore, arms are not rational structure. Arm patterns exist only in spiral galaxies and they are weak compared with the main disk structure of spiral galaxies. Therefore, the presence of arm structure is the disturbance to the rational structure. Because arm patterns exist only in spiral galaxies and only spiral galaxies present dust, Dr. He comes to the critical answer to the above question: any disturbance to rational structure produces cosmic dust! From now on we call the disturbance to rational structure the cosmic impulse. Therefore, the universe is originated not only rationally but also impulsively!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis work focuses on the understanding of the formation and subsequent evolution of the population of elliptical galaxies in rich galaxy clusters. Elliptical galaxies define a unique and simple laboratory to study the process of galaxy formation and the evolution of stellar populations. Observational data, including a sample of eight clusters observed at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) and ten clusters observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), have been used to conduct several related studies. A surface brightness analysis of the ellipticals in the cores of ten galaxy clusters observed with HST shows that elliptical galaxies are well-represented by an 'r'1/4-law light profile and follow a well-defined relation in the magnitude/size plane, up to 'z' = 1.2. This relation shifts, on average, towards higher luminosities (or equivalently, to smaller sizes) with increasing redshift. If we assume that the size of these galaxies are fixed during the period from 'z' = 1.2 to the present, then these galaxies are evolving monotonically in luminosity. This luminosity evolution amounts to [Delta]'MB' = -1.2 at 'z' = 1.2, when compared to the galaxies in local clusters, and is consistent with that expected for an old and passively evolving stellar population. The luminosity functions for the red galaxies from the eight clusters in the CTIO sample show that are well-represented by a Schechter function, consistent with a single value for their characteristic magnitude (M*). When compared to local cluster luminosity functions, there is evidence for a brightening of a few tenths of a magnitude in M* (the exact value depends on the cosmology). For a low density universe, the brightening observed in the luminosity function, up to 'z' = 0.45, is consistent with that observed from the surface brightness analysis. The cluster elliptical galaxies from the CTIO sample, selected morphologically using a galaxy light profile fitting technique, define a very tight sequence in the colour/magnitude plane. All the clusters are consistent with having a single value for their intrinsic colour dispersions, [delta] = 0.06 ± 0.02, in the restframe ('U' - 'V')/' V' colour relation. These small colour dispersions imply the stars in these galaxies have a typical age dispersion from galaxy to galaxy of ~20% of their age at 'z' = 0.45. Similarly, when comparing the mean colour for the different clusters, it was found that they are consistent with having a single mean colour, ('V' - 'I') = 2.055 ± 0.028. The small dispersion in the mean colours is completely accounted for by sampling uncertainties. With the addition of 'K'-band photometry, and data for local ellipticals, it has been possible to determine the evolutionary vector in the restframe ('U' - 'V')/(' V' - 'H') colour plane from 'z' = 0.45 to 'z' = 0. Predictions of current models have been tested against this observed vector. Most of the more popular models have failed to account for this colour change, and only a more sophisticated model--including infall of primordial gas and chemical enrichment during the assembly of the stellar population--was able to reproduce the observed evolution. The observations in this work strongly suggest that these galaxies are old systems formed at high redshift. However, given the quantitative uncertainties in the observations, population synthesis models, cosmology, and uncertainties in how much synchronicity in formation is reasonable, the observations do not rule out scenarios involving formation at lower redshifts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IAU Symposium 127 was held in Princeton on May 28-31, 1986, at the Institute for Advanced Study. There were 150 participants from 19 countries. This was the first IAU Symposium devoted exclusively to elliptical galaxies. The last decade has been a period of exceptionally rapid progress regard ing our understanding of elliptical galaxies, driven on the observational side by a wealth of new photometric and spectroscopic data, and on the theoretical side by the recognition that ellipticals are slowly rotating triaxial systems, instead of rotationally flattened bodies. The 30 invited speakers reviewed all aspects of this progress, its consequences, and the major outstanding problems. Nearly 80 poster contributions were displayed for the duration of the meeting. These contained many of the most recent developments. The first part of these Proceedings contains the written versions of the invited reviews and the summary, in the order of their presentation. The accompanying discussions are based on the written versions of questions and answers as handed in by the participants. The second part of this book is devoted to the poster contribu tions. They have been grouped in a thematic order, proceeding from morphology to theory. Indices of objects, subjects, and names are provided. Unfortunately, none of the invited participants from the USSR were able to attend the Symposium. The Proceedings include the written versions of the planned contributions by Popov and Polyachenko.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first set of simulations, by accurately capturing the detailed substructures of nearby elliptical galaxies and then rescaling their sizes and signal-to-noise to mimic galaxies at different redshifts, we confirm that the massive quiescent galaxies at z ≈ 2 are significantly more compact intrinsically than their local counterparts. Their observed compactness is not a result of missing faint outer light due to systematic errors in modeling.
