Of these I intended the first to be concerned only with the facts of animal intelligence, while the second was to have treated of these facts in their relation to the theory of Descent. Finding, however, as I proceeded, that the material was too considerable in amount to admit of being comprised within the limits of a single volume, 1 have made arrangements with the publishers of the 'international Scientific Series to bring out the second division of the work as a separate treatise, under the title 'mental Evolution.' This treatise I hope to get ready for press within a year or two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Animal Intelligence The investigations of recent years have added so much to our knowledge of the activities of animals that any adequate account of the whole field of animal behavior would require several volumes. The present work is confined to certain topics which bear upon the evolution of animal intelligence, and our treatment of even this part of the subject has been of necessity fragmentary. It has been our aim to give a fairly clear conception of the activities upon which intelligence is based, to show how intelligence is related to these activities, and to sketch the general course of the evolution of intelligence in the animal kingdom. No effort has been made to deal with all the classes of animals in which intelligence is manifested, and some groups which were not essential to the development of our theme have received little attention. I wish to express my thanks to Prof. L. J. Cole and Prof. H. B. Torrey for their helpful criticisms of the manuscript of this book before it went to press. To Prof. L. T. Hobhouse, Prof. E. L. Thorndike and Dr. L. Witmer I am indebted for permission to reproduce the figures which are attributed to these writers in the text, and I am also indebted to the Macmillan Company for kindly allowing me to reproduce figures 15 and 16 from their publications. My greatest debt is to my wife for help and encouragement in many ways. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Development of Animal Intelligence From various quarters the suggestion has come to me to prepare a work on Comparative Psychology, as it was known that this subject has engaged my attention in no small measure for many years. It would be easy enough to collect an additional number of anecdotes of animals, and pen some reflections on them. It might be possible to gather together some accounts of the doings of animals of undoubted accuracy and examine these critically, but all this has been done, and we must now enter on another stage - that of exact, systematic observation and experiment. There are, however, many methods by which so broad a science as Comparative Psychology can be advanced, and I hope no word I may write may suggest any of those narrow views for which even scientific men are sometimes to be held responsible. There are many points of view, and it will be well to gather observations and opinions from every proper source available. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Intelligence: Experimental Studies It has seemed best to leave the texts unaltered except for the correction of typographical errors, renumbering of tables and figures, and redrawing the latter. In a few places, where the original text has been found likely to be misunderstood, brief notes have been added. It is hard to resist the impulse to temper the style, especially of the Animal Intelligence, ' with a certain sobriety and restraint. What one writes at the age of twenty-three is likely to irritate oneself a dozen years later, as it doubt less irritated others at the time. The charitable reader may allay his irritation by the thought that a degree of exuberance, even of arrogance, is proper to youth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolutional Ethics and Animal Psychology In tracing the history of the evolution of ethics we find the recognition of mutual rights and duties confined at first to members of the same horde or tribe, then extended to worshippers of the same gods, and gradually enlarged so as to include every civilized nation, until at length all races of men are at least theoretically conceived as being united in a common bond of brotherhood and benevolent sympathy, which is now slowly expanding so as to comprise not only the higher species of animals, but also every sensitive embodiment of organic life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Life and Intelligence There are many books in our language which deal with Animal Intelligence in an anecdotal and conventionally popular manner. There are a few, notably those by Mr. Romanes and Mr. Mivart, which bring adequate knowledge and training to bear on a subject of unusual difficulty. In the following pages I have endeavoured to contribute something (imperfect, as I know full well, but the result of several years' study and thought) to our deeper knowledge of those mental processes which we may fairly infer from the activities of dumb animals. The consideration of Animal Intelligence, from the scientific and philosophical standpoint, has been my primary aim. But so inextricably intertwined is the subject of Intelligence with the subject of Life, the subject of organic evolution with the subject of mental evolution, so closely are questions of Heredity and Natural Selection interwoven with questions of Habit and Instinct, that I have devoted the first part of this volume to a consideration of Organic Evolution. The great importance and value of Professor Weismann's recent contributions to biological science, and their direct bearing on questions of Instinct, rendered such treatment of my subject, not only advisable, but necessary. Book excerpt: Animal behavior has long been a battleground between the competing claims of nature and nurture, with the possible role of cognition in behavior as a recent addition to this debate. There is an untapped trove of behavioral data that can tell us a great deal about how the animals draw from these neural strategies: The structures animals build provide a superb window on the workings of the animal mind. Animal Architects examines animal architecture across a range of species, from those whose blueprints are largely innate (such as spiders and their webs) to those whose challenging structures seem to require intellectual insight, planning, and even aesthetics (such as bowerbirds' nests, or beavers' dams). Beginning with instinct and the simple homes of solitary insects, James and Carol Gould move on to conditioning; the "cognitive map" and how it evolved; and the role of planning and insight. Finally, they reflect on what animal building tells us about the nature of human intelligence-showing why humans, unlike many animals, need to build castles in the air.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Intelligence: Experimental Studies The main purpose of this volume is to make accessible to students of psychology and biology the author's experimental studies of animal intellect and behavior. These studies have, I am informed by teachers of comparative psychology, a twofold interest. Since they represent the first deliberate and extended application of the experimental method in animal psychology, they are a useful introduction to the later literature of that subject. They mark the change from books of general argumentation on the basis of common experience interpreted in terms of the faculty psychology, to monographs reporting detailed and often highly technical experiments interpreted in terms of original and acquired connections between situation and response. Since they represent the point of view and the method of present animal psychology, but in the case of very general and simple problems, they are useful also as readings for students who need a general acquaintance with some sample of experimental work in this field.
