Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of a Democratic School System It is probable that at the close of the great emergency in which we now find ourselves this nation will undergo a notable reappraisal and a considerable reconstruction. A nation seldom makes large sacrifices for the maintenance of its ideals without becoming sensitive to practices which fall far short of them. Already we are deeply concerned to know just what qualities of personal character and precisely what kinds of human relationships are fundamental to the realization of a truly democratic life. We are asking whether or not we possess these in adequate degree, and how we are to overcome our discrepancies. The American cannot long ask himself these questions without ultimately looking to the public school system for ways and means of rebuilding our national character and life. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918 edition. Excerpt: ... Ill THE BEGINNINGS OF THE AMERICAN SYSTEM The early settlers in New England were democratic in their educational ideals, at least to the point of demanding that every one should have some kind of training. They were all members of the same social class in theory if not in final practice. But the traditions of the Old World and the natural tendencies toward specialization were strong in determining the form of organization which the schools even of that democratic community took on. There soon arose, on the one hand, a higher professional school with its special preparatory schools not unlike the aristocratic schools of Europe, and on the other hand, a lower common school which gave to the ordinary boy and girl some training in matters of religion and in the art of reading necessary for a first-hand acquaintance with the Scriptures. The common school was in form much like its European predecessors. The higher professional school was not a part of the popular educational system. The subject-matter of instruction in the higher school was determined by special vocational demands. The lower school had its wholly non-professional task to perform and accordingly used non-professional material in its teaching. The statement can be made concrete by quoting descriptions of the two kinds of institutions which appeared in the earliest years of New England history. The first of the higher institutions was Harvard College, founded by an act of the General Court of Massachusetts Bay in October, 1636. The early charters of Harvard set forth the general purpose of the institution as that of taking all necessary provisions "that may conduce to the education of the English and Indian youth of this country in knowledge and godliness." This general purpose...

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trend in American Education One of the most significant phenomena in the develop ment of our American democracy during the past thirty years has been the ever enlarging scope of our system of education. There has been a conscious attempt on the part of our people to realize the democratic ideal of equality of opportunity. The remarkable progress that has been made is due in no small measure to the leadership of a group of men and women who have thought and planned in advance of current practice. During the twenty-five years which are just past Dean Russell has been responsible for the development of an educational institution which has trained leaders for our American schools from the kindergarten to the university. He has been in the position of one who has thought and planned in terms of our rapidly developing school system. His leadership would not have been recognized had he sought merely to meet the current demand. The very great respect which members of the profession have come to have for his judgment, and their confidence in his fore sight are clearly evidenced by the growth and influence of the institution over which he presides. Book The Administration of Education in a Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Administration of Education in a Democracy Classic Reprint written by Horace A. Hollister and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Administration of Education in a Democracy This book was projected with the idea that the time is here for such a preliminary treatment, as an organic whole, of the field of educational administration. In seeking for a unifying principle the inevitable choice fell to our national ideals as expressed in democracy as we Americans have conceived it. The aim has been to deal with principles, giving just enough space to history and description to furnish a suitable background and to account for sequences. In this way only did it seem possible to deal with the prob lems presented in such a constructively critical manner as the situation seemed to demand. The book makes its appeal (1) to teachers and stu dents of education, (2) to school boards and all school officials, and (3) to public men and legislators interested in a comprehensive survey of the problems of public education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy in Education: A Social Interpretation of the History of Education Educational experiment and reconstruction no longer need an excuse; all that they need is illumination. This will come from a number of sources, one of which must be history. It is said that history proves nothing, which may be true, it is certainly true that history leaves many things to disprove. And history does reveal many phases of the educational problem which must be made the sub jcet of critical investigation. History digs up the prob lems and shows their roots grown deep in old soils. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public-School System of the United States The material contained in this volume will consist of the most important of the data that I collected during a journey extending over a period of more than five months, made under the auspices of "The Forum," for the purpose of studying the public-school system of the United States. The facts presented in the first part of the present work do not vary materially from those presented in a series of articles recently published in that magazine. The matter contained in the second part, however, - the part devoted exclusively to the compositions written by the children and the drawings made by them, - appears here for the first time. In undertaking this journey it was my aim not only to learn what methods of instruction were commonly followed in our country, and the general condition of our schools, but also to investigate the manner in which the schools of different cities were managed. That system has been defined and promoted by various commonwealths and aided by grants from the federal government, until there are throughout the union schools free to all, con se-rvinga patriotic citizenship and assuring an eu lightened nation, but it is from New York that the chief leadings, those of public provision for their maintenance and central authority for their conduct have proceeded. Book The Democratic Ideal in Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Democratic Ideal in Education Classic Reprint written by R. E. Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Democratic Ideal in Education In our land there is to-day considerable discussion upon educational matters. Appeals are made sometimes to our reason, and sometimes to our prejudices, and considerable bitterness of feeling is aroused and displayed, and generally much pother is created upon matters that are only incidentally educational. Let us trust that out of this evil good may come. Let us hope that what is at present an interest produced artificially, and with much labour, may become perennial and natural. Let us seize this golden opportunity to make our people permanently interested in this fateful problem of national education, so that the popular apathy, which in the past has been our curse, may develop into a popular vigilance, without which no truly national system is possible. But popular vigilance needs popular intelligence. Until our people can be made to see the true inwardness of their own instinctive faith, until they can be made to realise what national training means, and to understand why we need a better system of education - not, indeed, to beat the German, but to beat the devil - only when these matters have become part of our common faith may we look for the regeneration of this land. The superficial is always evident, but the spirit is rarely recognised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Reorganization of the Public School System Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reorganization of the Public School System Classic Reprint written by Frank Forest Bunker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reorganization of the Public School System A little more than two decades ago Charles W. Eliot, convinced that the age at which the college graduate completes his course and begins supporting himself was too high, put the question, Can school programs be shortened and enriched? This query precipitated a discussion which, while ranging over the entire field of educational theory and practice, centered particularly upon the purpose and place of the common school, the high school, and the institutions of higher learning. This critical examination of the principal parts of the system has set in clearer light their characteristics and has led to the belief that a proper regard for the distinctive functions of each makes imperative a reorganization, or at least a readjustment, of the chief divisions of the system with respect to articulation, to internal organization, to grade span, and to defined purpose.
