Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the twenty-two Evangelicals who have been studied, some have been so widely influential that they are obvious inclusions, others though less prominent are still remembered while a few are all but forgotten. Selection was controlled by several considerations. The period covered spans from the eighteenth century Revival to the present day. Figures are included from only Britain and America. The aim throughout has been to provide an appreciative exposition of Evangelical spirituality, with some evaluative comment. In Evangelicalism there is extraordinary diversity in spiritual experience, doctrinal emphasis and personal temperment, to the enrichment of the whole Church. It has its share, too, of weaknesses, blind-spots and inner tensions. But judged by its best representatives, some of them to be found in this book, the Evangelical spiritual tradition is a continuing witness to the power of the gospel and the mission of the Church. --from the Preface

Book The Politics of Faith during the Civil War

Download or read book The Politics of Faith during the Civil War written by Timothy L. Wesley and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Politics of Faith during the Civil War, Timothy L. Wesley examines the engagement of both northern and southern preachers in politics during the American Civil War, revealing an era of denominational, governmental, and public scrutiny of religious leaders. Controversial ministers risked ostracism within the local community, censure from church leaders, and arrests by provost marshals or local police. In contested areas of the Upper Confederacy and Border Union, ministers occasionally faced deadly violence for what they said or would not say from their pulpits. Even silence on political issues did not guarantee a preacher's security, as both sides arrested clergymen who defied the dictates of civil and military authorities by refusing to declare their loyalty in sermons or to pray for the designated nation, army, or president. The generation that fought the Civil War lived in arguably the most sacralized culture in the history of the United States. The participation of church members in the public arena meant that ministers wielded great authority. Wesley outlines the scope of that influence and considers, conversely, the feared outcomes of its abuse. By treating ministers as both individual men of conscience and leaders of religious communities, Wesley reveals that the reticence of otherwise loyal ministers to bring politics into the pulpit often grew not out of partisan concerns but out of doctrinal, historical, and local factors. The Politics of Faith during the Civil War sheds new light on the political motivations of homefront clergymen during wartime, revealing how and why the Civil War stands as the nation's first concerted campaign to check the ministry's freedom of religious expression.

This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth-century international religious movement known as the Réveil had a major impact on Protestantism, and particularly on Evangelicalism. That impact is still evident today. Yet as a multi-faceted phenomenon, this movement has not received its due share of scholarly attention. This book offers a collection of essays exploring the international dimensions of the Genevan strand of the Réveil, providing an overview of events and trends, outlining the careers of some of its key figures, and highlighting some of the areas in which it made a contribution to contemporary society. As the first such collection to focus on this movement, it brings together scholars from several countries, with expertise in its various aspects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lot has been said about the atonement theology of the theologians, but what of ordinary believers and their church leaders? What, if anything, have they done with "penal substitution" or with "Christus Victor"? How, if at all, have these doctrinal approaches helped ordinary Christians to live more devoted lives or lead good church services? Ben Pugh takes the temperature of the church at various points in its history right up to the present day, noting particular emphases that can be detected in various expressions of personal and corporate faith--whether these be hymns, sermons, magazines, or devotional texts. The book aims not only to describe what the implied atonement theologies of the church have in reality been but also to explore why these have taken the forms that they have. This exploration will shed some fresh light on current debates, building on the findings of the author's earlier work, Atonement Theories: A Way through the Maze.
