Book Menexenus Euthyphro Laches and Lysis Dialogues of Plato

Download or read book Menexenus Euthyphro Laches and Lysis Dialogues of Plato written by Plato and published by . This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Menexenus The Menexenus is in large part a funeral oration delivered by Socrates, which he claims was provided by Aspasia, Pericles' mistress. Interpreters of the work are divided over the intention of the work and how it should be understood. It is a parody, an exercise in rhetoric, or serious and a representation of Plato's political ideals? Euthyphro Often underrated, Euthyphro examines the nature of piety and demonstrates the dangers of pretending to have knowledge that one does not have. Socrates, on his way to the court where he will be charged with atheism and corrupting the young, meets the young 'prophet' Euthyphro and asks him to explain, "what is piety and what impiety"? Laches In Laches Plato examines courage, in particular moral courage. Morally good conduct requires not only the ability to distinguish what the right course of action is, but also the strength of will to act accordingly. In this dialogue Laches, Nicias and Socrates debate various definitions of courage. Lysis An engaging examination of friendship that has not received the attention that it deserves. Socrates discusses the types of friendship and the notion of a primary object of love, for whose sake one loves other things.

Book Speeches for the Dead

Download or read book Speeches for the Dead written by Harold Parker and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Menexenus, in spite of the dearth of scholarly attention it has traditionally received compared to other Platonic texts, is an important dialogue for any consideration of Plato’s views on political philosophy, history, and rhetoric – to say nothing of the dialogue’s contribution to the study of civic ideology and institutions, natural law theory, and Plato’s notion of race. Speeches for the Dead unites the contributions of scholars working on diverse aspects of the dialogue, growing out of a one-day workshop on the same subject at the University of Pennsylvania organized by the editors. In offering a variety of perspectives on the Menexenus, the volume is the very first of its kind in any language. In addition, the volume contains an up-to-date bibliography of scholarship in English, French, German, and Italian. This makes the book a definitive guide and ideal starting point for advanced students and scholars looking for further information about the dialogue.

Book excerpt: The Menexenus is a Socratic dialogue of Plato, traditionally included in the seventh tetralogy along with the Greater and Lesser Hippias and the Ion. The speakers are Socrates and Menexenus, who is not to be confused with Socrates' son Menexenus. The Menexenus of Plato's dialogue appears also in the Lysis, where he is identified as the "son of Demophon", [1] as well as the Phaedo. The Menexenus consists mainly of a lengthy funeral oration, referencing the one given by Pericles in Thucydides' account of the Peloponnesian War. Socrates here delivers to Menexenus a speech that he claims to have learned from Aspasia, a consort of Pericles and prominent female Athenian intellectual.

Book The Dialogues of Plato Volume 1

Download or read book The Dialogues of Plato Volume 1 written by Plato and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This initial volume in a series of new translations of Plato's works includes a general introduction and interpretive comments for the dialogues translated: the Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno, Gorgias, and Menexenus. "Allen's work is very impressive. The translations are readable, lucid, and highly accurate. The general introduction is succinct and extremely clear. The discussion of the dating of the dialogues is enormously useful; there has previously been no brief account of these issues to which one could refer the student. Finally, the particular introductions are first rate: fine jobs of clear philosophical and historical explanation--succinct and yet sophisticated, both close to the text and philosophically incisive."--Martha Nussbaum, Brown University "This is an important work that deserves our respect and attention."--Ethics "This and the promised succeeding volumes will probably become the standard English version of the complete dialogues.... The commentaries take advantage of the best scholarship, judge judiciously between divergent views, and often introduce new and brilliant interpretations. This is true both in the area of philosophy and in that of literary criticism."--Anthony C. Daly, S.J., Modern Schoolman "Allen is a superb translator, whose elegantly simple yet precise language gives access to Plato both as a philosopher and as a literary artist."--Library Journal "An important event in the world of scholarship."--London Review of Books
