Book The Commonwealth and the European Union in the 21st Century

Download or read book The Commonwealth and the European Union in the 21st Century written by Melanie Torrent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union? Is the Commonwealth of Nations still relevant for its very diverse member states, ranging from small island states to Australia and India? In contemporary British politics, both organisations have come under fierce criticism, sometimes leading to hasty assessments of historical experiences and current policies. Given the fact that the United Kingdom, Cyprys and Malta are members of both organisations, and that ‘Brexit’ would have far-ranging consequences much beyond British shores, relations between the EU and the Commonwealth have featured surprisingly rarely in major debates of international policy. This edited volume suggests possible – and even desirable – connections between the two organisations by investing current contacts, fault lines, external critique and outside perspectives. Focusing on soft power, development, humanitarianism and modes of intervention, the authors investigate disputes over international norms and trade patterns. Through global approaches and specific case studies drawn from Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, they demonstrate where opportunities for international cooperation were missed and how useful partnerships might be found. The EU and the Commonwealth are undoubtedly very different organisations but distinctions can provide grounds for meaningful, relevant cooperation. More strategic dialogue between the Commonwealth and the EU, this volume agues, would be a valuable asset for the two international organisations, their member states and their citizens. This book was originally published as a special issue of The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The European Commonwealth: Problems Historical and Diplomatic The essays contained in this volume represent a selection from a much larger number contributed to quarterly and monthly Reviews during the last four years. They have been selected because, though not originally designed as steps in a coherent argument, they seem to possess a certain measure of unity and consistency. With one exception all have been written.since the outbreak of the war, and the single excep tion (chapter III) stands in at least as close a relation to recent events as the rest. Suggested though they were by successive aspects of the great struggle in which Europe and the world have been involved, the essays are the fruit of studies which have claimed a large portion of my time during the last thirty years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a controversial work of applied legal theory, addressing urgent contemporary questions about law and the State, about the character of the UK as a state, and about the judicial character of the European Union in its relationship with the member states of the Union. It is also a contribution to political theory in its discussion of the rule of law, the theory of sovereignty, and the principles of liberal nationalism. It combines a statement and application of the `institutional theory of law' with a balanced and carefully argued version of contemporary Scottish nationalism.

Book The European Community in the World

Download or read book The European Community in the World written by Richard Bailey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1973 The European Community in the World shows what ‘outward looking’ can mean in terms of British participation in the Community and of the Community’s policies and actions as a world power. Richard Bailey says that the time for argument for or against British membership of the Common market has gone. The enlargement of the Community is a fact: how, then, can Britain best adjust to the new situation? The extension of the European Community is significant for all the world and will increase its power among the institutions that govern the world, affecting the politics of many countries from Sweden to Swaziland. In post Brexit world, this book is a must read for students and scholars of European politics, European history, British history, and British politics.

Book Immigration Policy and Security

Download or read book Immigration Policy and Security written by Terri Givens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-08-18 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration policy in the United States, Europe, and the Commonwealth went under the microscope after the terror attacks of 9/11 and the subsequent events in London, Madrid, and elsewhere. We have since seen major changes in the bureaucracies that regulate immigration—but have those institutional dynamics led to significant changes in the way borders are controlled, the numbers of immigrants allowed to enter, or national asylum policies? This book examines a broad range of issues and cases in order to better understand if, how, and why immigration policies and practices have changed in these countries in response to the threat of terrorism. In a thorough analysis of border policies, the authors also address how an intensification of immigration politics can have severe consequences for the social and economic circumstances of national minorities of immigrant origin.
