Book Wall Paintings of Eton

Download or read book Wall Paintings of Eton written by Emily Howe and published by Scala Arts Publishers Incorporated. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paintings which adorn the lower walls of the chapel at Eton College are arguably the most important surviving late-medieval murals in Northern Europe. Documented as having been painted between 1479 and 1487, they originally comprised some thirty-two scenes ranged in two registers on the chapel's north and south walls, recounting the miracles of the Virgin. Concealed for years with whitewash and panelling, it was not until the 1920s that the paintings were finally uncovered and their significance appreciated fully. This stunningly illustrated publication brings together the considerable body of recent research into these internationally important wall paintings, giving a comprehensive description and an account of their creation and patronage. It also includes a fascinating discussion on the Head Master's Chambers wall painting dated to around 1520 and discovered in 2005. AUTHOR: Emily Howe is wall paintings advisor to English Heritage and works closely with the Courtauld Institute's Department of Wall Painting. Henrietta McBurney is Keeper of Fine and Applied Arts at Eton College and was previously curator of Prints and Drawings at the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle. Professor David Park is Director of the Conservation of Wall Painting Department at the Courtauld Institute of Art. SELLING POINTS: *Wall Paintings of Eton combines known facts about the wall paintings with the findings of recently commissioned scientific analysis *This is the first book on these important works since M. R. James's seminal publication The Frescoes in the Chapel at Eton College published over 100 years ago ILLUSTRATIONS: 214 colour

Book The Eton College Chapel Wall Paintings

Download or read book The Eton College Chapel Wall Paintings written by Roger Rosewell and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late fifteenth century wall paintings in Eton College Chapel are the finest surviving examples in northern Europe. Over sixty five feet (19.812 m) long, they depict scenes from the Miracles of the Virgin separated by standing figures of saints. Largely painted in monochrome - or grisaille - style and enriched with flashes of colour, the style is reminiscent of Netherlandish art and represents a visual stepping stone between traditional gothic imagery and English renaissance art. In the first full length study of these magnificent paintings, Roger Rosewell describes the human stories behind them; who they were made for and why, the beliefs that underpinned them, the nationality and style of the painters, the fate of the paintings during the Reformation when the College barber was paid `to wipe them out' and how they were eventually rediscovered centuries later behind layers of whitewash. Illustrated by over 150 stunning photographs, this book is a magnificent pictorial record of one of the most sophisticated masterpieces of late medieval art; a masterpiece that was almost lost to us for all time.Roger Rosewell was educated at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University. A former journalist, he is Director of a private European Art Foundation and the News Editor of the on-line stained glass journal, VIDIMUS. His other published works include Medieval Wall Paintings/ (Boydell 2008).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medieval wall paintings that remain in English churches are for the most part shadows of their former selves – the rare fragments of this beautiful art to have survived not only the Reformation but also successive waves of iconoclastic zeal and unsympathetic restoration. The whitewashed walls of most parish churches belie the riot of colour and decoration that once adorned them, but the remnants of paintings tucked into corners or rescued from later layers of paint help us to understand the role of art in medieval religion. Roger Rosewell here offers a guide to the role played by medieval wall paintings, as religious, didactic and commemorative works of art, telling the stories of those who created them and those who used them on a daily basis. He also compares and contrasts religious and domestic wall paintings, using beautiful colour photography throughout.

Download or read book Northern Renaissance Art written by Susie Nash and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-11-27 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a wide-ranging introduction to the way that art was made, valued, and viewed in northern Europe in the age of the Renaissance, from the late fourteenth to the early years of the sixteenth century. Drawing on a rich range of sources, from inventories and guild regulations to poetry and chronicles, it examines everything from panel paintings to carved altarpieces. While many little-known works are foregrounded, Susie Nash also presents new ways of viewing and understanding the more familiar, such as the paintings of Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, and Hans Memling, by considering the social and economic context of their creation and reception. Throughout, Nash challenges the perception that Italy was the European leader in artistic innovation at this time, demonstrating forcefully that Northern art, and particularly that of the Southern Netherlands, dominated visual culture throughout Europe in this crucial period.

Book excerpt: Norfolk 1: Norwich and North-East and its companion, Norfolk 2: North-West and South, aim to provide a lively and uniquely comprehensive survey of the architectural treasures of Norfolk. Extensively revised and expanded, these new editions of Sir Nikolaus Pevsner's original volumes bring together the latest research on a county which has some of the most attractive buildings in England. The gazetteer is enhanced by an introduction which provides a perceptive overview of the region's architectural inheritance, and is illustrated by numerous text figures, maps and 130 photographs (many specially commissioned). Pre-eminent in this volume is the city of Norwich, rich in major buildings of outstanding quality, from Norman cathedral and castle to twentieth-century city hall and university. Supreme among the ports described in this volume is the medieval walled town of Great Yarmouth, whose highly individual history and buildings are here examined in detail for the first time. There are also full descriptions of many appealing market towns, whilst the rest of the county is revealed through succinct accounts of its parish churches and less well-known buildings. Abbey ruins, brick eighteenth-century farmhouses and estate cottages in quiet inland villages contrast with coastal fishing settlements and resorts. Great barns testify to the significance of agriculture. Country houses range from the magnificent Jacobean Blickling Hall to seaside extravaganzas by Lutyens. Detailed indexes make this not only an essential reference book, but also a guide book for anyone interested in the rich region of Norfolk.
