Book The Ethnic Chinese and Economic Development in Vietnam

Download or read book The Ethnic Chinese and Economic Development in Vietnam written by Khánh Trần and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 1993 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic reforms in Vietnam have allowed its ethnic Chinese citizens to prosper, but growing Chinese economic strength harbours the seeds of political problems. The topic is also meshed with the larger concern of Sino-Vietnamese relations, which in the best of times can be coloured by a suspicion which goes back centuries. In the worst of times, as in 1978/79, both sides were engaged in open warfare. To understand the current situation, The Ethnic Chinese and Economic Development in Vietnam delves into the origins of Chinese settlement in Vietnam, tracking the flow of history through the major events which have shaped the Chinese mercantile community and made it what it is today. The most significant feature of Dr Tran Khanh's work is that it draws on Western, Russian, and Vietnamese sources, as well as the writer's own familiarity with the actual situation on the ground.

Book The Chinese Exodus from Vietnam

Download or read book The Chinese Exodus from Vietnam written by Judith Strauch and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis emphasizes Chinese ethnicity as a significant factor motivating exodus from Viet Nam and as an explanation of the deteriorating conditions within Viet Nam. It also explains the reception accorded to refugees by most Southeas t Asian countries, as they reach areas where ethnic Chinese populations are already living uneasily with indigenous peoples. The paper presents the colonial origins of Chinese separateness and the reasons for the endemic insecurity and vulnerability of the Overseas Chinese in South East Asia. The climate of ethnic relations throughout the region is sensitive and volatile and indigenous élites everywhere are seeking ways of achieving economic development and ethnic stability (nation-building). The author discusses the possibility of a relationship between the outbreak of ethnic conflict in one part of the region and the potential for heightened tension elsewhere, a 'demonstration effect'. The paper examines trends in Indonesia and Malaysia and suggests that the general climate of racial tolerance in those countries may be deteriorating. This possibility, and its implicit connection with the Vietnamese expulsion of ethnic Chinese, must be acknowledged if it is to be counteracted.

Book excerpt: The mountainous borderlands of socialist China, Vietnam, and Laos are home to some seventy million minority people of diverse ethnicities. In Moving Mountains, anthropologists, geographers, and political economists with first-hand experience in the region explore these peoples' survival strategies, as they respond to unprecedented economic and political change. Although highland peoples are typically represented as marginalized and powerless, this volume argues that ethnic minorities draw on culture and ethnicity to indigenize modernity and maintain their livelihoods. This unprecedented glimpse into a poorly understood region shows that development initiatives must be built on strong knowledge of local cultures in order to have lasting effect.

Book Regional Minorities and Development in Asia

Download or read book Regional Minorities and Development in Asia written by Huhua Cao and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia has undergone strong economic growth since the Second World War. However, it also experiences growing economic and regional disparities brought about by this unprecedented development. This economic growth cannot be considered sustainable without taking into consideration the social development of minority populations, as well as the fundamentals of minority rights. The chapters in this book work from the premise that an environment that favours the emergence of various conditions necessary for the development of minority populations will contribute towards further economic development and prosperity, as well as the social cohesion of the entire country. Bringing together perspectives from Economics, Development and Area Studies, Geography, Anthropology, and Sociology, the contributors provide local narratives that shed light on some of the different needs, situations, and methods of problem solving. This diverse approach gives a nuanced perspective on social, economic and political inequality, and the ways in which people are constructing varied responses to the challenges of modernization. Through the comparison of the characteristics and realities of minority region development among countries in East and Southeast Asia, this book provides a better understanding of the development-related challenges faced by minority regions in the current context of modernization and globalization.

Book Asian Values and Vietnam s Development in Comparative Perspectives

Download or read book Asian Values and Vietnam s Development in Comparative Perspectives written by Irene Nørlund and published by Nordic Institute of Asian Studies. This book was released on 2004 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection considers how cultures influence each other's values and social organization to elucidate cross-cultural interactions. The idea of a special set of 'Asian values' in a more profound understanding has clearly had an impact on the thinking among Vietnamese scholars, but more surprisingly, the recent pan-Asian economic crisis has had a more profound impact than expected on the discussion in Vietnam. Most Vietnamese scholars speak not of 'Asian values' but rather of Vietnamese values because the Asian impact is transformed in the Vietnamese setting. Those dealing with modern society tend to perceive the Western value impact as positive and universal. Indeed, if there has been a period of much concern with 'Asian values', particularly Confucianism, the pendulum seems for most Vietnamese scholars to have swung back towards seeing Western values as being those of the future.

Book Development in Vietnam

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam's economy has been fundamentally changed by the policy reforms implemented in the 1980s to provide an environment that is more conducive for economic growth and social stabilization. The policy reforms have had a tremendous impact on economic activities and on all aspects of social life. The economy is presently moving from a centrally planned system largely based on public ownership to a market-oriented and mixed economy. Social structures and values have changed, and legal, institutional, and administrative systems are gradually changing as well. The reform process gives rise to exciting challenges and opportunities for development. Based largely on Vietnamese sources of data and information, this book presents an analysis of the main features of economic policy reforms in Vietnam, their socioeconomic impact, and several major theoretical and practical problems Vietnam faces on its path to development.
