Book Provincializing the Worldly Citizen

Download or read book Provincializing the Worldly Citizen written by Noah W. Sobe and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provincializing the Worldly Citizen examines travel to Czechoslovakia by Yugoslav educators and students in the 1920s and 1930s in the context of educational modernization and national identity formation. It argues that «Slavic Cosmopolitanism» was an important element in educating the Yugoslav child and in the development of schooling practices in Yugoslavia. The book examines how notions of «Slavicness» circulated and were related to visions of the ideal Yugoslav, linking together these two concerns - not merely to cross-fertilize Slavic studies, the history of education, and the field of comparative education but as part of an effort to develop new intellectual strategies for transnational, cross-cultural scholarship. To this end, it examines Yugoslav student and teacher travel as an entry point to analyzing the regulative ideals that were inscribed in the Yugoslav child as a future citizen. From the broadest perspective, the book offers ways of thinking about the functions of travel and schooling by exposing the fabricated categories of ethnicity and nation as they become worked into cultural and pedagogical ideals. In specific terms, it is an examination of how interwar Yugoslav schools produced worldly minded Yugoslavs - not just through the official curriculum but across a wide range of cultural practices.

Book Marxism and Morality

Download or read book Marxism and Morality written by Nicholas Churchich and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2022-04-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not himself a Marxist, Dr Churchich has nevertheless won plaudits for this book from those committed to the philosophy. It is, they acknowledge, thoroughly researched, well reasoned, and balanced in its argument - even if that argument is one with which Marxists are bound to disagree, being based on the premise that 'ethical theories must ultimately rest on metaphysical and psychological preconceptions rather than on some imaginary empirical facts'. The declared aim of this work is to present a full exposition of Marx's and Engels' ideas on morality and ethics, and to indicate some of their errors and weaknesses. Unlike other studies of this subject, Churchich analyses all major aspects of morality, dealing not only with the writings of Marx himself but also with the works of most writers who have commented on Marxist morality and ethics. Marx himself intended to produce a work on social morality, but did not manage to do so. This book will therefore, and without doubt, become the standard work on his view of the subject. Superior to anything else on the topic written by non-Marxists, it is clearer on some aspects of Marx's view than the work of some Marxist writers - Churchich makes obvious for instance, how great was Althusser's mistake in arguing that there is 'not a grain of normative ethics in mature Marx'. Yet the author's objectivity allows him also to find values among the ethical arguments of Marx and Engels, making this a book which both Marxists and concerned Anglicans would find useful as a criticism of some current social trends. It also sounds a cautionary note for those who argue that the collapse of bureaucratic socialism in the former Soviet Union means the end of Marxism too - this is by no means Dr Churchich's view.

Download or read book Marxism and Morality written by Nicholas Churchich and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Marx promised, in the preface to his Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, that he would write an ‘independent pamphlet’ on ethics. Although he never did so, in his later writings he discussed morality extensively. Later commentators were more concerned with other aspects of Marx’s thought and largely neglected this area. As a result, Nicholas Churchich’s exposition of Marx’s thoughts on morality has become the standard work on the subject. Thoroughly researched, well reasoned, and balanced in its argument, Marxism and Morality presents a comprehensive and critical analysis of Marx’s and Engel’s ideas on morality and ethics, analysing both strengths and weaknesses. Churchich examines morality in its bourgeois and proletarian forms, the origin and development of moral ideas, moral values and standards, egoism and altruism. He explores the role of religion and science in communist ethics, and discusses the ends and means in the struggle for a classless society. Praised by those on both sides of the political divide for his objectivity, Churchich’s approach remains the definitive evaluation of the ethical arguments of Marxism.

Book Ethica or the Ethics of Reason

Download or read book Ethica or the Ethics of Reason written by Scotus Novanticus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethica or the Ethics of Reason The following treatise, which is an analysis of the nature and growth of the ethical in man, is the complement of Metaphysica Nova et Vetusta. Accordingly the argument presumes throughout that the reader has perused that work. Ethics without psychology is empty: without Metaphysics it cannot be Science. I have to thank the critics of the Metaphysica for the reception accorded to it. There is only one remark which, as coming from an eminent philosopher, I would here advert to. He says in a letter to me that there can be no objection to the term "Will," as I use it, if taken for "Reason in activity." My position, however, is that Reason is itself the product of Will; that the moments of Will constitute Reason. Kant's Vorstellung of Man is "a rational being endowed with Will."
