  • Pages : 180 pages

Download or read book Aquinas on Creation written by Saint Thomas (Aquinas) and published by PIMS. This book was released on 1997 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six articles that comprise Book 2, Distinction 1, Question 1 of Aquinas' Writings on the "Sentences" of Peter Lombard represent his earliest and most succinct account of creation. These texts contain the essential Thomistic doctrines on the subject, and are here translated into English for the first time, along with an introduction and analysis. In Article One Aquinas argues, against Manichean dualism, that there is one ultimate cause of all created being; in so doing he gives three proofs for the existence of the Creator and the essential features of his answer to the problem of evil. Thomas establishes his definition of creation in Article Two, providing the needed distinctions between philosophical and theological senses of creation. Emanationism and the problem of whether there can be any intermediary causes in God's act of creation are the subject of Article Three. The next article demonstrates that although God is the cause of all created being, nevertheless creatures are true causes in nature. Article Five argues that it is from revelation alone that we know that the world had a temporal beginning, and that the philosophical arguments that purport to show either the necessity or impossibility of the temporal beginning are not persuasive. A detailed exposition of the meaning of the first sentence of the Bible, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth," follows in Article Six.

Book Change the Arrow of Time and Divine Eternity in Light of Relativity Theory

Download or read book Change the Arrow of Time and Divine Eternity in Light of Relativity Theory written by Daniel Saudek and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has two aims; first, to provide a new account of time's arrow in light of relativity theory; second, to explain how God, being eternal, relates to our world, marked as it is by change and time. In part one, Saudek argues that time is not the expansive universal 'wave' that is appears to be, but nor are we living in an unchanging block. Rather, time is real but local: there are infinitely many arrows of time in the universe, each with their own fixed past and open future. This model is based on the ontology of substances which can exist in different states, marked by different properties. On this basis, a derivation of temporal precedence and of the asymmetry between the fixed past and the open future is provided. Time's arrow is thus 'attached' to substances, and is therefore a local rather than global phenomenon, though by no means an illusory or merely subjective one. In part two, this model is then applied to the perennial questions concerning the relationship between divine eternity and the temporal world: How can my future choices be free if God already knows what I will do? Can God act if He is not in time? Through the lens of relativity theory, such questions are shown to appear in a completely new light. The book combines insights from theoretical physics with ancient and contemporary philosophy into a unique synthesis, broaching a wealth of key issues including the arrow of time, the evolution of the cosmos, and a physics-based defence of eternalism in philosophical theology.

Book Nature and Divinity in Plato s Timaeus

Download or read book Nature and Divinity in Plato s Timaeus written by Sarah Broadie and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plato's Timaeus is one of the most influential and challenging works of ancient philosophy to have come down to us. Sarah Broadie's rich and compelling study proposes new interpretations of major elements of the Timaeus, including the separate Demiurge, the cosmic 'beginning', the 'second mixing', the Receptacle and the Atlantis story. Broadie shows how Plato deploys the mythic themes of the Timaeus to convey fundamental philosophical insights and examines the profoundly differing methods of interpretation which have been brought to bear on the work. Her book is for everyone interested in Ancient Greek philosophy, cosmology and mythology, whether classicists, philosophers, historians of ideas or historians of science. It offers new findings to scholars familiar with the material, but it is also a clear and reliable resource for anyone coming to it for the first time.

But human beings have found no signs of other life anywhere approaching human intelligence. This changes when scientists discover a sunless planet they name Danann, travelling the void just beyond the edge of the Galaxy at such a high speed that it cannot be natural. Its continents and oceans have been sculpted and shaped, with but a single megaplex upon it--close to perfectly preserved--with tens of thousands of near-identical metallic-silver-blue towers set along curved canals. Yet Danann has been abandoned for so long that even the atmosphere has frozen solid. Within a few years Danann will approach an area of singularities that will make exploration and investigation impossible. Orbital shuttle pilot Jiendra Chang, artist Chendor Barna, and history professor Liam Fitzhugh are recruited by the Comity government and its Deep Space Service, along with scores of other experts as part of an unprecedented and unique expedition to unravel Danann's secrets. And there are forces that will stop at nothing to prevent them, even if it means interstellar war. Other Series by L.E. Book excerpt: BLURB ‘Kayinath’, meaning ‘Universe’ a collection of excellent Urdu poetry written by Professor Ghulam Hussain Daleel, is based on Sufism, which believes in the philosophy of ‘Unity of Creations’ and this expounds that there cannot be any difference between one group of mankind and another. The criterion that should govern the relationship among human beings is ‘love’ and there should be no place for any hatred or discrimination. This book authored by his daughter, Ms. Razia Begum Abdul Azeez, is a translation and exhaustive commentary on ‘Kayinath’. It was written to decipher the intellectually rich and spiritually pristine piece of her father’s magnum opus, into comprehendible message for the benefit of humanity. This book has deep rooted Sufi Philosophy and Islamic Spiritualism which the erudite author Ms. Razia Begum has prudently thrown light on, citing relevant reference from the Holy Quran and sayings of Prophet Mohammed ( peace be upon him).
