Book A GRIEF OBSERVED Based on a Personal Journal

Download or read book A GRIEF OBSERVED Based on a Personal Journal written by C. S. Lewis and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Grief Observed is a collection of Lewis's reflections on the experience of bereavement following the death of his wife, Joy Davidman, in 1960. The book was first published under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk as Lewis wished to avoid identification as the author. Though republished in 1963 after his death under his own name, the text still refers to his wife as "H" (her first name, which she rarely used, was Helen). The book is compiled from the four notebooks which Lewis used to vent and explore his grief. He illustrates the everyday trials of his life without Joy and explores fundamental questions of faith and theodicy. Lewis's step-son (Joy's son) Douglas Gresham points out in his 1994 introduction that the indefinite article 'a' in the title makes it clear that Lewis's grief is not the quintessential grief experience at the loss of a loved one, but one individual's perspective among countless others. The book helped inspire a 1985 television movie Shadowlands, as well as a 1993 film of the same name. Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, lay theologian and Christian apologist. He is best known for his fictional work, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain.

Book The Eternal Fountain of Youth Youth s Revolution

Download or read book The Eternal Fountain of Youth Youth s Revolution written by Thomas Peace and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eternal Fountain of Youth --- (Youth s Revolution) Most of us are used to (i.e., accustomed to) existing with what is possible, and, for most of us, what is possible is rather ordinary and mundane. Is it possible, or impossible, for a mere book to provide an irrefutable mystery, a mystery that boldly presents eternity to humanity? Creating a mystery out of nothing would be a most blackguardly thing to do because that would be exploiting people and ruthless that s a dirty trick. Either one creates a mystery when there isn t one, or there is a mystery which you have to approach with extraordinary delicacy and hesitancy, and, you know, tentativeness. --- (excerpt from J. Krishnamurti) Anyone who reads The Eternal Fountain of Youth -- (Youth s Revolution), with an open mind, is bound to get a substantial glimpse of the profound mystery that it emanates. The legendary fountain of youth is a spring that reputedly restores the youth of whoever drinks from its waters. If you objectively read the book from beginning to end, you definitely will get a taste of mystery, and a taste of what supersedes death and ending. (In an indirect way, it may be like drinking directly from the Grail cup itself.) We need to change the world for the better. It is a profound responsibility that each one of us shares. Changing for the better may not involve wallowing in the same-old, worn-out traditions that we have stagnated in before. If you are afraid to look at life, consciousness, religion, society, and time in wholly new ways, then do not read the book. (If you do not cherish the essence of life as it is, please do not read the book.) The book involves real and profound change. What real change entails may be a tremendous shock to our systems. However, we cannot go on as we have in the barbaric past; to do so would be terminal. ----Thank you, Thomas Peace"

Download or read book Fountain of Salvation written by Fred Sanders and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A trinitarian exposition of Christian soteriology The relation of God and salvation is not primarily a problem to be solved. Rather, it is the blazing core of Christian doctrine, where the triune nature of God and the truth of the gospel come together. Accordingly, a healthy Christian theology must confess the doctrine of the Trinity and the doctrine of salvation as closely related, mutually illuminating, and strictly ordered. When the two doctrines are left unconnected, both suffer. The doctrine of the Trinity begins to seem altogether irrelevant to salvation history and Christian experience, while soteriology meanwhile becomes naturalized, losing its transcendent reference. If they are connected too tightly, on the other hand, human salvation seems inherent to the divine reality itself. Deftly navigating this tension, Fountain of Salvation relates them by expounding the doctrine of eternal processions and temporal missions, ultimately showing how they inherently belong together. The theological vision expounded here by Fred Sanders is one in which the holy Trinity is the source of salvation in a direct and personal way, as the Father sends the Son and the Holy Spirit to enact an economy of revelation and redemption. Individual chapters show how this vision informs the doctrines of atonement, ecclesiology, Christology, and pneumatology—all while directly engaging with major modern interpreters of the doctrine of the Trinity. As Sanders affirms throughout this in-depth theological treatise, the triune God is the fountain from which all other doctrine flows—and no understanding of salvation is complete that does not begin there.

Book excerpt: This book is an invitation to reacquaintance with the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is also a book of theotropics. As the tiny heliotrope "by nature" orients its face to the sun, so each of us orients our face toward the Beloved. The deeper wisdom is not systematic. Spiritual traditions communicate expressions of wisdom that may blend as harmoniously as the fragrances of a flower garden. This book is about seeing the presentations of our life as occurring under the watchful care of the Blessed Mother. It is, in this sense, a phenomenology of Marian spirituality. The descending Age to come--whose premonitions are already occurring--can be regarded as an Age of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This book is about the generosity at the heart of the cosmos that is mirrored in the hearts of all beings whatsoever in their original and undefended state. The Blessed Virgin is regarded as both Life-Giving Spring and fire that does not consume. For children of the Mother, she is reality as well as the metaphor that contains many other metaphors. She is the reality from which arise answers to many questions--a closing of the circle of what is possible in anyone's life. The book is structured as a mosaic of reflections unfolding from attention to the ancient Greek icon of the "Life-Giving Spring" (Zoodochos Pighi), an instance of which is shown on the cover of this book. As a phenomenology, the book makes reference to the imaginal realm as identified principally by the Iranologist, Henry Corbin. This book touches on hierophanies of the Virgin Mary as well as on particular locales, such as Glastonbury, Walsingham, and Medjugorje, and on the significance of pilgrimage.
