Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Cold War, when the United States' intelligence efforts were focused on the Soviet Union, one of the primary tasks of the Central Intelligence Agency was to estimate Soviet defense spending. In Soviet Defense Spending: A History of CIA Estimates, 1950-1990, Noel E. Firth and James H. Noren, who spent much of their long CIA careers estimating and studying Soviet defense spending, provide a closer look at those estimates and consider how and why they were made. In the process, the authors chronicle the development of a significant intelligence analytic capability. Firth and Noren also explain what the CIA has learned since the collapse of the Soviet Union about the USSR's actual military spending during the Cold War.

Download or read book The Soviet Budget written by Raymond Hutchings and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1984-06-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much does the Soviet Union spend on defense, economic development, social welfare, and education? How does it finance the enormous scale of its expenditures under all these heads? What typical sequences are disclosed, and how do they mesh with other types of behavior in the Soviet economy? Can one even believe the official figures? If so, what do they tell us? If not, in which directions may they need to be corrected? Has the degree of secretiveness varied over time? (Evidence is adduced to show that it has.) What are the branch and territorial components of the budget, and how are they put together, under which pressures and within which timescale? What is the budget's legal status, and how is it affected by legislative procedures? In this in-depth investigation into the scope, structure, and meaning of the Soviet budget, Raymond Hutchings answers these questions. Based largely on an intensive analysis of quantitative series built up over a very long period, this book contributes to understanding the Soviet economy from an angle made possible by no other approach. Students of the Soviet economy, economists, and specialists in international affairs will find the book's data, conclusions, and methods of analysis extremely useful.

Book The Structure of the Defense Industry

Download or read book The Structure of the Defense Industry written by Nicole Ball and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proponents of arms control and disarmament are often confronted with the argument that reductions in defense expenditure lead to cutbacks in military industries and thus to economic hardship. While a reduction in defense production would cause some economic dislocation, this would be mitigated by the ability of the economy to adapt to changing patterns of production. This book, first published in 1983, assesses the likely effects of reductions in defense industries by an examination of the roles these industries play in national economies. Each chapter discusses industry employment, output, research and development, capital value, profitability, concentration and competition, internal organization and regional employment concentration. Other questions considered include the economic importance of weapons exports, the defense industry as a ‘leading edge’ in maintaining national technological capabilities, and the reliance of individual firms on defense contracting.

Book Power Threat or Military Capabilities

Download or read book Power Threat or Military Capabilities written by Carmel Davis and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2011-11-25 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power, Threat, or Military Capabilities assesses two mainstays of international relations, balance of power and balance of threat, using the case of US balancing against the Soviet Union in the later Cold War. It also proposes balance of military capabilities, which uses offense-defense theory to argue that countries balance against the ability of others to conquer or compel them. Power, Threat, or Military Capabilities finds that the US was more powerful than the Soviet Union so US behavior is not explained by balance of power. The US did not perceive the Soviet Union as likely to initiate war or to run risks that might lead to war so US behavior is not explained by balance of threat. This book determines that the US was concerned about its ability to defend Europe and the Persian Gulf so US behavior is explained by balance of military capabilities.

Book Khrushchev and Brezhnev as Leaders Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Khrushchev and Brezhnev as Leaders Routledge Revivals written by George W. Breslauer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, this book explores how Khrushchev and Brezhnev manipulated their policies and personal images as they attempted to consolidate their authority as leader. Central issues of Soviet domestic politics are examined: investment priorities, incentive policy, administrative reform, and political participation. The author rejects the conventional images of Khrushchev as an embattled consumer advocate and decentraliser, and of Brezhnev’s leadership as dull and conservative. He looks at how they dealt with the task of devising programs that combined the post-Stalin elite’s goals of consumer satisfaction and expanded political participation with traditional Soviet values.
