Download or read book Manors and Maps in Rural England from the Tenth Century to the Seventeenth written by P.D.A. Harvey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: P.D.A. Harvey is a historian of medieval rural England with a wide interest in the history of cartography; this collection of his essays brings together both these strands. It first looks at the English countryside from the 10th century to the 15th, investigating problems in particular documents, in the village community and in underlying long-term changes. How landlords drew profits from their property in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, how and why there followed changes in the way landed estates were run and in the written records they produced, what new light their personal seals can throw on medieval peasants, are all among the topics discussed, while the local management of large estates and the development of the peasant land market are themes that recur throughout. There follow essays on the way maps were brought into the management of landed estates in the 16th and 17th centuries, starting with the introduction of consistent scale into mapping, a new concept crucially important in the general history of topographical maps. The collection closes by looking at some of the traps that both documents and maps set for the historian of the English countryside.

Download or read book Medieval Society and the Manor Court written by Zvi Razi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The records of manorial courts have been used increasingly as the principal source for the reconstruction of rural and small town society in medieval England. They offer a unique source with which to investigate peasant demography, family patterns, the village community and economy, the characteristics and instruments of customary law, and the ways in which that law was perceived and exploited by landlords and tenants. The essays in this collection provide novel approaches to all of these themes and are written by many of the historians who have pioneered the use of this source category in the last two decades. In two introductory chapters, the editors review the historiography of manorial court rolls and account for their origins as a distinctive record of customary law within the broad context of medieval European society. A valuable appendix contains an inventory of the most comprehensive unprinted manorial court roll series arranged systematically on a county-to-county basis, detailing the repository in which they are located. This book will serve as an essential reference tool for any serious study of medieval English rural society.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexity of medieval & modern pre-metric weights & measures (W&M) in Britain presents an obstacle to scholarly research on Western European econ. history. The problem is: the approx. dimensions of many non-standardized measuring units, used by both the Crown & the regional & local markets, varied from time to time & from place to place; & the dimensions even of standard W&M used in any period are poorly understood. This book will clarify the confusion & bring a new focus to the field of metrology & a new understanding of the units. It includes: tables for rapid identification of all ruling English, Scottish, Irish, or Welsh sovereigns; current English Imperial, Amer. Customary, & metric units; & the basic equiv. for these W&M; & A Dict. of Brit. W&M.

This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Estate Book Of Henry De Bray Of Harleston, Co. Northants: C. 1289-1340 The late Miss Mary Bateson examined the Estate Book of Henry de Bray, and in view of the fact that the author was a layman of the late thirteenth century, she regarded this compilation as almost, if not quite, unique. In any case she was strongly of opinion that the mss. Should prove of value as a source of medieval and economic history. In 1909 I had the honour of reading a paper on the mss. Before the Royal Historical Society. Since then some further investigations have been made; but there remain several miss ing links, which the skill of more experienced antiquaries will probably supply. My grateful thanks are due to Mr W. Corbett for much help on points of land tenure I am also indebted to the late Miss P. Steele Hutton for several valuable references; to Mr D. T. B. Wood', of the Manuscript Department, British Museum, for deciphering the pre scription for the plague and the view of frankpledge; and to Mr William Page, General Editor of the Victoria County History, for access to some of his notes on topographical sources.
