Download or read book The Miles Davis Reader written by Frank Alkyer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you ever needed proof that a magazine can have a love affair with a musician, you're holding it in your hands. For DownBeat, the preeminent publication of the jazz world, Miles Dewey Davis was one of its most cherished subjects. Since it began covering the jazz scene in 1939, no other artist has been more diligently chronicled in its pages than Davis. The beauty of this collection is seeing the development of an artist over time. The reviews of his music go from quietly introducing a new talent to revering, perhaps, the greatest jazz artist of his generation. The feature articles begin with a very young, very polite Davis lamenting, “I've worked so little. I could probably tell you where I was playing any night in the last three years.” As he develops, the interviews show Davis gaining confidence and stature, showing swagger and becoming the over-the-top, say-it-like-it-is showman that made every interview an event. The Miles Davis Reader compiles more than 200 news stories, feature articles, and reviews by some of the greatest writers in jazz into one volume. It delivers a patchwork of his words and music – in the moment, as they happened. With several lengthy features added along with a dozen new photographs, this new edition is a beautiful series of snapshots, a year-by-year ride through the many phases of Davis as an artist and as a man.

Book The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet 1965 68

Download or read book The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet 1965 68 written by Keith Waters and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-11 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Second Quintet" -- the Miles Davis Quintet of the mid-1960s -- was one of the most innovative and influential groups in the history of the genre. Each of the musicians who performed with Davis--saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams--went on to a successful career as a top player. The studio recordings released by this group made profound contributions to improvisational strategies, jazz composition, and mediation between mainstream and avant-garde jazz, yet most critical attention has focused instead on live performances or the socio-cultural context of the work. Keith Waters' The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-68 concentrates instead on the music itself, as written, performed, and recorded. Treating six different studio recordings in depth--ESP, Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, Miles in the Sky, and Filles de Kilimanjaro--Waters has tracked down a host of references to and explications of Davis' work. His analysis takes into account contemporary reviews of the recordings, interviews with the five musicians, and relevant larger-scale cultural studies of the era, as well as two previously unexplored sources: the studio outtakes and Wayne Shorter's Library of Congress composition deposits. Only recently made available, the outtakes throw the master takes into relief, revealing how the musicians and producer organized and edited the material to craft a unified artistic statement for each of these albums. The author's research into the Shorter archives proves to be of even broader significance and interest, as Waters is able now to demonstrate the composer's original conception of a given piece. Waters also points out errors in the notated versions of the canonical songs as they often appear in the main sources available to musicians and scholars. An indispensible resource, The Miles Davis Quintet Studio Recordings: 1965-1968 is suited for the jazz scholar as well as for jazz musicians and aficionados of all levels.

It compiles twelve songs recorded by Davis's nonet for the label over the course of three sessions during 1949 and 1950. Featuring unusual instrumentation and several notable musicians, the music consisted of innovative arrangements influenced by classical music techniques such as polyphony, and marked a major development in post-bebop jazz. As the title implies, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of cool jazz. The majority of the recordings were originally released in the ten inch 78 rpm format and are all approximately...

Book Dark Magus

Download or read book Dark Magus written by Gregory Davis and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark Magus is a warts-and-all look at the real Miles Davis. As told by his son, this book strips away the public perception of Davis often concocted through other books written without such intimate access to the man and gets down to the realities of his personality and quirks. Despite being a jazz superstar for decades, Davis was reclusive and deeply distrustful of other people. Dark Magus details Davis's Jekyll-and-Hyde personality, including his prodigious drug use, his misogynistic attitude towards women, his self-centeredness and selfishness, his obsessive chasing of young women, his use of amphetamines during concerts, and his distressing tendency to use violence to get his way or exact revenge for slights real and imagined. Other fascinating details abound, including Davis's relationship with Charlie Parker, his obsession with sports (especially boxing), his likes and dislikes, his personal philosophies, and his often gruelling work with younger musicians.

Book Miles Davis

Download or read book Miles Davis written by Bill Cole and published by William Morrow &Company. This book was released on 1974 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the first comprehensive study of the work and the life of one of the true geniuses of African-American music. Davis, one the trumpet, is one of the true innovators in this music, and without question, an immortal. Not intended as a full biography, this book nonetheless supplies the essential details of Miles Davis's life, from his birth to a middle-class family in Illinois in 1926 through his arrival in New York at the age of nineteen, his "discovery" by the critics at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival, his years of greatest musicianship, and what Bill Cole considers his decline, commencing in the mid-1960s, when Davis's music "became more beautiful than revolutionary." On the specifically musical side of the book, there are, in addition to a general discussion of Davis's playing, thirteen musical transcriptions of Davis solos, and a complete list of Miles Davis's recording sessions, arranged chronologically, which will prove invaluable to any serious student of the man and the music will demonstrate how fine a combination this book is of biography and scholarship. -- From publisher's description.
