Book Evanescent Waves in Optics

Download or read book Evanescent Waves in Optics written by Mario Bertolotti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an introductory discussion of evanescent waves and plasmons, describes their properties and uses, and shows how they are fundamental when operating with nanoscale optics. Far field optics is not suitable for the design, description, and operation of devices at this nanometre scale. Instead one must work with models based on near-field optics and surface evanescent waves. The new discipline of plasmonics has grown to encompass the generation and application of plasmons both as a travelling excitation in a nanostructure and as a stationary enhancement of the electrical field near metal nanosurfaces. The book begins with a brief review of the basic concepts of electromagnetism, then introduces evanescent waves through reflection and refraction, and shows how they appear in diffraction problems, before discussing the role that they play in optical waveguides and sensors. The application of evanescent waves in super-resolution devices is briefly presented, before plasmons are introduced. The surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are then treated, highlighting their potential applications also in ultra-compact circuitry. The book concludes with a discussion of the quantization of evanescent waves and quantum information processing. The book is intended for students and researchers who wish to enter the field or to have some insight into the matter. It is not a textbook but simply an introduction to more complete and in-depth discussions. The field of plasmonics has exploded in the last ten years, and most of the material treated in this book is scattered in original or review papers. A short comprehensive treatment is missing; this book is intended to provide just that.

Book Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides

Download or read book Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides written by Xingcun Colin Tong Ph.D and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to integrated optical waveguides for information technology and data communications. Integrated coverage ranges from advanced materials, fabrication, and characterization techniques to guidelines for design and simulation. A concluding chapter offers perspectives on likely future trends and challenges. The dramatic scaling down of feature sizes has driven exponential improvements in semiconductor productivity and performance in the past several decades. However, with the potential of gigascale integration, size reduction is approaching a physical limitation due to the negative impact on resistance and inductance of metal interconnects with current copper-trace based technology. Integrated optics provides a potentially lower-cost, higher performance alternative to electronics in optical communication systems. Optical interconnects, in which light can be generated, guided, modulated, amplified, and detected, can provide greater bandwidth, lower power consumption, decreased interconnect delays, resistance to electromagnetic interference, and reduced crosstalk when integrated into standard electronic circuits. Integrated waveguide optics represents a truly multidisciplinary field of science and engineering, with continued growth requiring new developments in modeling, further advances in materials science, and innovations in integration platforms. In addition, the processing and fabrication of these new devices must be optimized in conjunction with the development of accurate and precise characterization and testing methods. Students and professionals in materials science and engineering will find Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides to be an invaluable reference for meeting these research and development goals.

Subsequent chapters address related topics such as laser modulation and nonlinear frequency conversion. In closing, the enormous importance of the laser is demonstrated by highlighting its current applications in everyday life and its potential for future developments. Typical applications in advanced material processing, medicine and biophotonics as well as plasma and X-ray generation for nanoscale lithography are discussed. The book provides broad and topical coverage of laser photonics and opto-electronics, focusing on significant findings and recent advances rather than in-depth theoretical studies. Thus, it is intended not only for university students and engineers, but also for scientists and professionals applying lasers in biomedicine, material processing and everyday consumer products. Further, it represents essential reading for engineers using or developing high-power lasers for scientific or industrial applications.

Book The Diffraction of Electromagnetic Waves by Dielectric Steps in Waveguides

Download or read book The Diffraction of Electromagnetic Waves by Dielectric Steps in Waveguides written by Erlind G. Royer and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of determining the scattered electromagnetic fields when a dielectric step discontinuity is placed in a waveguide is considered here. The case of a dielectric step which is semi-infinite in extent is presented first. Althouth an exact method of solution is not known at this time, it is shown that the recently introduced modified residue calculus technique can be successfully extended to obtain a very accurate approximate solution of the semi-infinite dielectric step. A unique advantage of this method of solution is that the degree of accuracy obtained is independent of the relative permittivity of the dielectric material and of the frequency. Thus, very high permittivities of frequencies can be considered without an attendant increase in computational complexity. Numerical data are presented which confirm the accuracy of the solutions obtained. The accurate determination of the total field is easily accomplished using the method of this study and is demonstrated. A further extension of the modified residue calculus method yields the approximate solution for the case of a finite dielectric step. This extension also enjoys the advantages mentioned above. The phase shifting abilities of the finite step are demonstrated by calculations which show the effects of varying the step height and the step length. (Author).
