Dana at once asked for a troop of veteran cavalry in addition to the regular provost guard, and the request was granted. He established a line of pickets from Fort Meigs on the left to a point on the right and gave orders to let none enter the city of Washington during the day who could not give a satisfactory account of business at the capitol, while from sunrise to sund'own no one should be permitted to enter or leave the city except in case of sick ness or death. All suspicious persons were to be arrested and sent to the Commanding General for investigation. April 14 two men appeared before the guard on the road leading to Washington from the east. Refusing to give their names they were arrested and placed in the guard tent from whence they were sent to headquarters. This was about one o'clock in the afternoon.
