Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Davie's poems are here arranged chronologically from the 1950s to the beginning of the 1990s. Taken together, the poems display that reverence for the distinctive qualities of the English language which has earned him a name as one of Britain's finest living poets. "Davie's voice—judgemental, ironic, epigrammatic, humorous, self-lacerating—speaks always with reference to an unhuman perpendicular standard that itself goes unquestioned. It is not a standard of Beauty or Truth; Davie is a poet of the third member of the Platonic triad, Justice."—Helen Vendler, The New Yorker "[Davie's poems] are on the quiet side, often casual and musing in mood and tone; determined to resist large gestures of assent or denial. . .Donald Davie may just be the best English poet-critic of our time."—William Pritchard, The New Republic "Donald Davie's Collected Poems does more than mark the culmination of one of the most distinguished careers in post-war British poetry; it is the autobiographical journey of a living poet at the height of his creative powers and the mastery of his craft. Davie is considered the most important and valuable contemporary link between poetry in England and America."—Sarah E. McNeil, Little Rock Free Press

Book Collected Critical Writings

Download or read book Collected Critical Writings written by Geoffrey Hill and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 827 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Critical Writings gathers more than forty years of Hill's published criticism, in a revised final form, and also adds much new work. It will serve as the canonical volume of criticism by Hill, the pre-eminent poet-critic whom A. N. Wilson has called "probably the best writer alive, in verse or in prose." In his criticism Hill ranges widely, investigating both poets (including Jonson, Dryden, Hopkins, Whitman, Eliot, and Yeats ) and prose writers (such as Tyndale, Clarendon, Hobbes, Burton, Emerson, and F. H. Bradley). He is also steeped in the historical context - political, poetic, and religious - of the writers he studies. Most importantly, he brings texts and contexts into new and telling relations, neither reducing texts to the circumstances of their utterance nor imagining that they can float free of them. A number of the essays have already established themselves as essential reading on particular subjects, such as his analysis of Vaughan's "The Night", his discussion of Gurney's poetry, and his critical account of The Oxford English Dictionary. Others confront the problems of language and the nature of value directly, as in "Our Word is Our Bond", "Language, Suffering, and Value", and "Poetry and Value". In all his criticism, Hill reveals literature to be an essential arena of civic intelligence.

Book The Personal and the Political RLE Social Theory

Download or read book The Personal and the Political RLE Social Theory written by Paul Halmos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are human misery, poverty and despair a result of personal inadequacy or social injustice? Therefore is the solution to these problems psychotherapy or political action? In one of the most important books on social work for a decade, Paul Halmos tries to resolve a dilemma which many social workers experience acutely – the conflict between a desire to help those in need and a fear that, by doing so, they merely support a political system which should, itself, be changed. Such a dilemma was highlighted during the sixties when 'casework' and personal counselling became discredited by the 'rediscovery' of widespread poverty and inequality in western society. To many the only solution seemed to be urgent and radical political action. For Professor Halmos the realities are more complex – an exclusive preoccupation with either personal or political solutions is unlikely to prove fruitful – what is needed is a dual sensitivity and balance. Yet for the author it is the political solution which carries within it the greater risk and he warns of the dangers inherent in the total politicization of social concerns. He argues that social action can become political action and ultimately political control.

Book Four Last Things

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Palmer
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2013-03-31
  • ISBN : 1448182239
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Four Last Things written by William Palmer and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-03-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Do you know what the last four things are? In the Christian catechism they are Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell. But in our secular age they should perhaps be changed. I suggest - First Love, Friendship, Betrayal and Death . . . These also happen to be the staples of the novelist. Is that the sort of thing you want?"' Thus Cornelius Marten asks the researcher who turns up one night at his house. Cornelius has forgotten his invitation to the young man. But the young woman who accompanies him seems strangely familiar. Cornelius is flattered by their attention. He had thought himself almost forgotten; his great works neglected. And Cornelius, monstrously selfish, whisky glass constantly in hand, his mind shifting between past and present, finds that his mysterious guests release memories and truths he had preferred to forget. The stories which follow Four Last Things complement and explore some of the same themes: the poet who has published only one poem; a bizarre stag night; a child who is haunted by his encounter with the adult world of a religious maniac; a dreamed murder; an academic who stirs the ghost of Byron in modern Venice; the shifts and deceptions of language and memory; and in a great jazzman's last wordless hurrah, a final flowering of beauty. This irresistibly powerful volume by the author of The Good Republic, Leporello and The Contract confirms William Palmer as one of our finest writers.
