Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epodes, Satires, and Epistles of Horace In fending the following translation into the world, the Editor regrets that it should share the common fate of posthumous publications - that of incompleteness. Happily the deficiency that remains to be supplied to complete a Translation of the works of Horace, consists in that portion of them, the Odes, of which English versifications may be generally thought to be already sufficiently abundant. Yet it is scarcely probable that the Author, had his life and health been spared, would have suffered so (comparatively) small a portion of his arduous task to remain unexecuted. Touching the degree of success which may be thought to attend the present endeavour to convey an accurate perception of the sense and spirit of Horace to the English reader, the Editor is well aware that no observations of his own could obtain a verdict not commanded by the intrinsic merit of the work. He only asks for that indulgence, which is due to every work that lacks the finishing stroke of the hand that first projected it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horace: The Odes, Epodes, Satires, and Epistles; Translated by the Most Eminent English Scholars and Poets IN spite of the great difficulty of rendering the exquisite Odes of Horace into another language with out at least diminishing their singular charm, they have found more translators than any other classic poet. From the days when the gallant and gifted Surrey and Sir Philip Sidney tried to achieve the task of rendering a few Odes, to the present day, numbers of our poets and greatest scholars have attempted to bestow on English Literature a more or less perfect version of the Roman Poet's works. Thus the terseness, the picturesqueness, the archness, or pathos of Horace have had the advantage of being reflected from many minds, and given in rhymeless metre or melodious verse as each translator preferred. The earliest ones were remarkable for almost too close a fidelity to the original, with the exception, perhaps, of Milton's rendering of the Ode to Pyrrha, which is as beautiful as it is faithful. Book The Complete Odes and Epodes

Book excerpt: Horace (65-8 bc) was one of the greatest poets of the Golden or Augustan age of Latin literature, a master of precision and irony who brilliantly transformed early Greek iambic and lyric poetry into sophisticated Latin verse of outstanding beauty. Offering allusive and exquisitely crafted insights into the brief joys of the present and the uncertain nature of the future, his Odes and Epodes explore such diverse themes as the virtues of pastoral life, the joys of wine, friendship and love, and the poet's personal anguish following Brutus' defeat at the battle of Phillipi. Ranging from subtle and tender hymns to the gods to bawdy celebrations of human passions, they remain among the most influential of all poems, inspiring poets from the Roman era to the European Renaissance, the Enlightenment and beyond.

Download or read book Satires and Epistles of Horace and Satires of Persius written by Horace and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Satires of Horace (65–8 BC), written in the troubled decade ending with the establishment of Augustus’ regime, provide an amusing treatment of men’s perennial enslavement to money, power, glory and sex. Epistles I, addressed to the poet’s friends, deals with the problem of achieving contentment amid the complexities of urban life, while Epistles II and the Ars Poetica discuss Latin poetry – its history and social functions, and the craft required for its success. Both works have had a powerful influence on later Western literature, inspiring poets from Ben Jonson and Alexander Pope to W. H. Auden and Robert Frost. The Satires of Persius (AD 34–62) are highly idiosyncratic, containing a courageous attack on the poetry and morals of his wealthy contemporaries – even the ruling emperor, Nero.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Satires and Epistles of Horace Tms book is intended for use in the class-room. There are therefore many things in the notes which the advanced Latin scholar may pass over. But the editor has derived so much advantage from editions of the Classics in which the notes reminded him in particular connections of things which in general he knew before, that he has not inquired so much whether a thing was likely to be known, as whether it was likely to be thought of in the connection. The notes are intended not so much to aid the student in the study of the Latin language as in the study of Horace, - what he meant, how he felt, and what prompted him to write as he did. In accordance with the plan of the College Series, the notes are put at the bottom of the page to facilitate reference. The editor is persuaded that college students sufficiently advanced to undertake Horace, ought no longer to get and recite lessons, but to study the literature, and understand and enjoy it. If the editor's suggestions enable anybody to do this, his purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Satires and Epistles of Horace: With Notes and Excursus Such then is my commentary on the Satires and Epistles of Horace, and when to it are added those on the Bucolics and Georgics of Virgil and on the Fasti of Ovid, it will be seen that I have endeavoured to illustrate all the more difficult poetry of the Augustan age. Of my commentary on this last most curious and valuable poem, those who have only seen it in the first edition can judge but very inadequately, as that was executed in a hurryand under most unfavourable circumstances. In its new and re modeled form it is, if I deceive not myself, perfectly qua lified to take its place along with my Horace and Virgil.
