Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle to the Philippians It may be Observed, however, that the Apostle's teaching repeatedly touches on the question, How the problem of practical human life on this earth is to be conceived and dealt with under the light and the influences of Christianity? The thought occurred that some expository passages might be superseded by an appendix summing up in one View the principles conceived to underlie the Apostle's way of dealing with such topics, which could be referred to on each separate occasion and such a statement was prepared. It was, however, finally judged more suitable to the nature of an exposition to keep as close as possible to the Apostle's turn of thought in each of the cases in which he approaches the subject, rather than to try to secure brevity by a more summary treatment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Philippians The passage of the Gospel from Eastern to Western civilization is an event of the highest importance and interest in the history of the Christian Church. With the exception of the extension of the offer of salvation from Jews to Gentiles, there is hardly anything of greater importance in the progress of Apostolic Christianity. It was an advance from a world in which the best elements of civilization were to be found in Judaism, to a world in which the best elements were centred in the art and literature of Greece, and in the military and political organization of Rome. Divine religion was seeking friendship with human philosophy and human law. It did not come uninvited. Macedonia, half Greek and half Roman, took the initiative under special guidance from heaven. The Spirit intimated that St. Paul, Silas and Timothy were not to preach the word in Asia, Mysia, or Bithynia: and, when Troas was reached and Luke had joined them, a man of Macedonia appeared to the Apostle with the urgent appeal, 'Come over into Macedonia and help us (Acts xvi. 6 ff.). Possibly the first ship that was available after this summons reached him was one that was bound for Neapolis (Kavalla), the port of Philippi, about nine or ten miles from it, and separated from it by a ridge which was then called Symbolum, and is about 1600 feet above the sea. More probably St. Paul saw the great advantages of starting from such a centre as Philippi, and chose his ship accordingly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Epistle of Saint Paul: To the Philippians He calls him his God, as well for the remarkable provi dence that be continually displayed for him in his Son Jesus Christ, as for the service that the apostle yielded him in his spirit, and for the lively feeling that he had of both. For though he be the God of all the faithful in common, every one of them in particular who would express the sentiments of his love, and the emotions of his zeal, may rightfully call him his God. AS we read that Thomas, in the rapturous joy which he felt when he positively recognized the Lord Jesus through his rich grace, expressed his own emotion in suddenly crying out, My Lord, and my God. 1. It was written during Paul's imprisonment at Rome,1 the period in his history to which the last verses in the Acts of the Apostles bring us, probably, judging from various statements in the Epistle, to wards the close of the imprisonment, in the end of a.d. 62, or beginning of a.d. 63, and thus about eleven or twelve years after his first visit to Philippi.2 During those years he had re visited the town at least twice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Philippians: With a New Translation Thirdly. The apostle was now separated from the Church, and hence no longer able to watch over the saints personally. He writes accordingly to those who had no longer his apostolic care, not only where they had not, but, in this case, where they had bishops and deacons. Yet in the latest epistles, where the apostle is filled with the sense of his speedy departure, there is not the slightest allusion to any provision for perpetu ating these officers - not even when writing confiden tially to one whom he had called on to ordain elders in Crete, nor to another invested with a charge at Ephesus.
