Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle of Paul to the Romans The Epistle to the Romans is the Epistle of the Epistles, as the Gospel of John is the Gospel of the Gospels. It is the heart of the doctrinal portion of the New Testament. It presents in systematic order the fundamental truths of Christianity in their primitive purity, inexhaustible depth, all-conquering force, and never-failing comfort. It is the bulwark of the evangelical doctrines of sin and grace against the obscuration of the gospel, whether by judaizing bigotry or paganizing licentiousness. Addressed to the Christians at Rome, and unfolding to them the gospel as a spiritual power of God unto salvation far exceeding in effect, and outlasting in time, the temporal power of the Imperial City, it prophetically anticipates and positively overthrows every essential error of Romanism, and is to this day the best antidote against popery. No wonder that it was so highly prized by the Reformers. Luther, whom Coleridge regarded "the only fit commentator on Paul," called the Romans "the chief part of the New Testament, and the purest gospel, well worthy to be committed to memory word for word by every Christian man, and to be pondered daily and enjoyed as the daily bread of the soul. It can never be too often nor too well read and considered, and the more it is understood, the better it tastes." Those who have studied it most carefully, are most likely to fall in with the judgment of Coleridge, that it is "the most profound work in existence." But it is certainly also the most difficult book of the New Testament, unless we except the Gospel of John and the Revelation. Meyer, the ablest philological exegete of the age, humbly confesses, in the preface to the fourth edition of his commentary, to a growing sense of our inability to do justice to "the grandest, the boldest, and, in all its depths and heights, the most complete composition of the greatest apostle." If St. Peter did not hesitate to state that there are "some things hard to be understood" in the Epistles of his "beloved brother Paul," we need not be surprised that even such divines as occupy the same general platform widely differ in their interpretations. The Epistle to the Romans, more than any other, is a battle-field; and every chapter, especially the third, the fifth, the seventh, and the ninth, is contested ground. Not a few commentators deal with it as Procrustes dealt with his victims, in adapting them to the length of his iron bedstead - either stretching out or cutting off their legs. But after all, vast progress has been made, especially within the last fifty years, toward an impartial and thorough understanding of this wonderful production of a wonderful man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans God forbid that any words that ever drop from my lips should seem to cast the smallest shadow of doubt on that great truth, God so loved the world that He gave His Son!' But God forbid, equally, that any words of mine should seem to favour the, to me, . Repellent idea that the infinite love of God disregards the character of the man on whom it falls. There are manifestations of that loving heart which any man can receive; and each man gets as much of the love of God as it is possible to pour upon him. But granite rock does not drink in the dew as a flower does; and the nature of the man on whom God's love falls deter mines how much, and what manner of its manifesta tions shall pass into his true possession, and what Shall remain without. So, on the whole, we have to answer the questions, Does God love any? Does not God love all? Does God specially love some with the one monosyllable, Yes. And so, dear brethren, let us learn the path by which we can pass into that blessed community of those on whom the fullness and sweetness and tenderest tender ness of the Father's heart will fall. If a man love Me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him.' Myths tell us that the light which, at the beginning, had been diffused through a nebulous mass, was next gathered into a sun. So the universal love of God is concentrated in Jesus Christ; and if we have Him we have it; and if we have faith we have Him, and can say, 'neither life, nor death, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.' This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Epistle of Paul to the Romans Such is the requirement that every student of Paul's Epistle to the Romans would gladly exact for himself from the translator. In the translation of a work of such immense fame, and of such immense moment, intrinsically, to us, we are right in demanding, not a free literary modernized translation, but a faithful repro duction of the exact structure, and the exact meaning of the original, even at the cost, if need be, of literary style, and of En glish idiom. But, happily, a version of this epistle, in order to be literal and exact, need not be nu-english, in either style or idiom. I've can express, literally and exactly, the words, the articles, the particles, the tenses of the verbs, the grammatical construction of the sentences, and the logical sequence of the thoughts, in clear, strong, idiomatic English. We can reproduce just the thought, and just the color of the thought, in appropriate English utterance. The history of Bible translation for five hundred years into English, will show how far this aim has been kept in thought, and how far this end has been attained. The Bible was first translated (from the Latin Vulgate) into English, in 1380, by Wyclif. His translation of the Bible, and still more his numerous English sermons and tracts, establish his now undisputed position as the founder of English prose writing. - (encycl. Brit.) Yet this translation, which had only a limited circulation, did not establish the standard of Biblical style for later scholars. Download or read book The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans written by Lyman Abbott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans: With Notes, Comments, Maps, and Illustrations The reader will observe also a peculiarity in the mechanical construction of the volume. The Introduction gives a general View of the Apostle's life, character, and writings, as they are interpreted in this volume. The volume itself consists of two parts, though interwoven; chapters accompanying the Revised Version, which may be read through as a continuous and connected book by one who wishes to get the general interpretation of the Epistle presented in this volume; and annotations in each chapter accompanying the Old Version, in which the student will find stated in some detail the critical reasons for that interpretation. With these words of explanation, this volume and its conclusions are submitted to the candid consideration of the Christian public, in the hope that, whatever may be the final verdict as to either its spirit or its methods, it may lead to a fresh study of the Epistle to the Romans, and so confer the intellectual and spiritual benefit which such study always confers on the candid and painstaking student of Scripture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans: With Notes A glance at the following pages will show that I enter into no competition with those who have sought to provide the students of Scripture with large materials of theological information, or to guide them through a labyrinth of conflicting interpreta tions. These are important objects, and learned and able men in our own country are pursuing them. But mine has been a different and a humbler aim. I have set before myself the case of readerswho re quire rather results than processes of investigation, and have sought not so much to argue and to discuss as to interpret and to teach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle of Paul to the Romans: Analysed From a Developement of Those Circumstances in the Roman Church by Which It Was Occasioned The small Volume was at first intended to be continuation of two other Volumes which the author has already laid before the public. But he has since thought it adviseable to render it independent of that Work. For this reason it became necessary to prefix to this Analysis of the Epistle to the Romans a brief view of the principal circumstances which occasioned its publication, He, however deemed it expedient to refer occasionally to the preceding volumes. But the reader is exempted from the absolute necessity of purchasing than though he would find, it is hoped, some satisfaction in consulting the passages to which references are made. In quoting the words of the Apostle, the Analyser sometimes gives an entirely new translation though more generally he has adopted the version of the late illustrious and ever memorable, scholar and Patriot, Gilbert Wakefield. That version however, he has taken the liberty to change, -wherever the original is, in his opinion, mistaken, or inadequately expressed. In explaining this obscure Epistle, the author, it will be seen, has made little or no use of the labours of other critics and commentators. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle of Paul, the Apostle to the Romans You occasionally meet in the New Tes tament, with an express reference to a certain body of writings, which are desi nated by the term of Scriptures. E now apply this term to the whole Bible. But, in those days, it was restricted to that collection of pieces which makes up the Old Testament. For the new was only in the process of its formation, and was not yet completed; and it was not till some time after the evangelists wrote their nar ratives, and the apostles their communi cations, that they were athered into one volume, or made to stan in equal and co. Ordinate rank with the inspired books of the former dispensation. So that all which is said of the Scrip tures in the New Testament, must be re garded as the testimony of its authors to the value and importance of those writings which compose the Old Testament. And it would therefore appear from Paul's epistle to Timothy, that they are able to make us wise unto salvation.
