Book excerpt: Like ecology, environmental science is multi- and interdisciplinary. The three major subdisciplines of environmental science are : Population, Resources, Environment. Of the above three major subdisciplines with environmental science, this book is more concerned with the third - the ecological effects of stressors, with particular reference to those associated with the activities of humans. A chapter deals with the use and abuse of biological resources and the emerging field of ecological economics. Some sections deal with environmental impact assessment; ecological monitoring; and the responsibilities of ecologists in environmental issues, environmental education, and the design of sustainable economic systems.

Book Environmental and Human Safety of Major Surfactants

Download or read book Environmental and Human Safety of Major Surfactants written by Sylvia S. Talmage and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarizes and reviews the environmental and human safety of two classes of nonionic surfactants-alcohol ethoxylates (AE) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APE). This unique resource contains critical data from published sources as well as from unpublished studies submitted by Soap and Detergent Association member companies. It reviews information on product chemistry and analysis, biodegradation, environmental levels (including fate and distribution), aquatic toxicity, and human safety. Recently developed analytical techniques for the extraction, separation, detection, and measurement of nonionic surfactants and their metabolites in environmental samples are described. Results of biodegradation studies performed with a variety of test systems are tabulated, as are results of field studies at wastewater treatment plants. Reported comparisons of environmental levels with results of acute and chronic aquatic toxicity tests are provided. The information on the toxicity and irritation potential of AE and APE surfactants includes data from in vitro, mammalian, and human studies.

Book Adjuvants and Agrochemicals

Download or read book Adjuvants and Agrochemicals written by Paul N. P. Chow and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of Adjuvants involve many scientific fields from basic research of the chemistry, through investigations into physiological effects and environmental impact, to mixture formulation and field use. These important areas are illustrated in these two volumes, which are contributions from the First International Symposium on Adjuvants for Agrochemicals, held in Brandon, Manitoba on August 5 to 7, 1986. A total of 200 participants from 19 countries met to discuss their common interest in adjuvant science, technology, and application. It is the editors hope that these volumes will stimulate interest in and promote a better understanding of the chemical, physiological, and agronomic aspects of adjuvants as they relate agrochemicals. In addition, the revisedAdjuvants for Agrochemicals: A Selected Bibliography of World Literature in the English Language will be a valuable resource for agricultural researchers and other users. We hope that adjuvant research will lead to even safer, more efficient, and more economical use of chemicals in agriculture and forestry.
