Book The environmental effects of the nuclear power industry

Download or read book The environmental effects of the nuclear power industry written by Chandran Ilango and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2013 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 4.0, Columbia Southern University, language: English, abstract: I worked on this paper during my Bachelor degree in Environmental Management during 2013 spring. Topics include the global environment, current and future energy issues, sustainability development, and the viability of green initiatives. This thesis study really helped me understanding past, present and potential future energy sources and their impact to environment. Nuclear power was introduced for commercial energy sector during 1950 to meet the global power demand. Nuclear power is proven environmentally economic, reliable, efficient and greener. However, nuclear waste disposal technique and Fukushima Daiichi and Chernobyl Nuclear power plant accidents created waves of fear and concern to environmentalist. Industrialist and environmentalist started to debate on nuclear power expansion project based on pro and cons of nuclear power. Environmentalist opposed and claiming nuclear power is expensive and dangerous to health, safety and environment. Further, they suggest and recommend that alternative energy such as wind, solar and thermal industry to be focused and invested for sustainable future. However, industrialist argued that we have improved modern technology to manage the nuclear waste to keep away from health, safety and environmental hazards. They also highlighted that the nuclear industry is highly regulated by Government to monitor and keep the hazard within permissible limits. Fossil resource is extensively used for energy sector which create unsustainability and push United States to depend on foreign oil resources. I have analyzed and summarized various authors and environmentalist articles argument on this subject. I have also explained the benefits of nuclear energy along with the risk involved in health, safety and environment. In conclusion, I have summarized my understanding and view recommending nuclear power energy over the other energy industries.

Book Environmental Impact of Power Generation

Download or read book Environmental Impact of Power Generation written by R E Hester and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's automated world, the need for economic generation of power is of vital importance. However, the industry is commonly perceived as being responsible for pollution of the atmosphere and contamination of land and water. The wide-ranging subjects addressed in this book will contribute to the public understanding of science in this important area. Encompassing areas as diverse as current performance standards and the use of nuclear fuel, Environmental Impact of Power Generation also includes an historical overview of electricity supply. The emotive issues of air pollution and the ecological effects of overhead power lines are tackled, along with energy efficiency and conservation. This book will be essential reading for students and practitioners in environmental science and engineering.

Book Environmental Impact of Nuclear Power Plants

Download or read book Environmental Impact of Nuclear Power Plants written by R. A. Karam and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Impact of Nuclear Power Plants contains the proceedings of a conference held in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 26-30, 1974 and sponsored by the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Nuclear Engineering. The papers focus on the environmental impact of nuclear power plants and are organized into six parts: plant site selection; ecosystems and ecological effects; radioactive waste and thermal pollution; standards and guidelines in the preparation of environmental reports; cost-benefit analysis; environmental impact studies of various power sources. Comprised of 23 chapters, this book begins with an assessment of siting considerations for nuclear power plants from a government perspective. The instrument used by Florida Power & Light in evaluating a power plant site is described, along with an ecosystem approach to atomic energy development. The discussion then turns to impact assessment for nuclear power plants and its implications for ecological and environmental sciences; radioactive waste systems and radioactive effluents; engineering aspects of heat dissipation in water bodies; and transportation of nuclear materials. Subsequent chapters deal with recommendations, standards, and regulations concerning the preparation of environmental reports for nuclear power plants; cost-benefit analysis in nuclear power plant licensing actions; and radioactive waste discharges at nuclear power plants. This monograph will be of interest to nuclear engineers and environmental policymakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A handbook for scholars, students, policy makers, journalists, and peace and environmental activists.A handbook for scholars, students, policy makers, journalists, and peace and environmental activists, Nuclear Wastelands provides concise histories of the development of nuclear weapons programs of every declared and de facto nuclear weapons power, as well as detailed surveys of the health and environmental effects of this development both in these countries and in non-nuclear nations involved in nuclear weapons testing and uranium mining. Among the more obvious but largely deferred costs of the Cold War are those related to the management of radioactive waste. The world is burdened with thousands of unwanted nuclear devices and mounting surpluses of weapons-grade plutonium and enriched uranium. In addition, the process of weapons production and testing has left many lands, aquifers, rivers, lakes, and seas contaminated by a multitude of weapons-related poisons. This book follows the production process step by step and country by country from uranium mining to the final assembly and storage of weapons, analyzing the potential hazards of each step and compiling the most complete information available on the actual health and environmental effects, in each country involved. Nuclear Wastelands includes a wealth of information that has only recently come to light, particularly on the nuclear weapons program of the former Soviet Union. It also features critical analyses of official public communications concerning the health and environmental consequences of nuclear weapons production, bringing to light governmental secrecy and outright deception that have led to the subversion of democratic principles, and have camouflaged the damage done to the very people and lands the weapons were meant to safeguard.
