Book Divided by a Common Language

Download or read book Divided by a Common Language written by Christopher Davies and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2007-09-26 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide to the language differences between the United States and United Kingdom is “a fascinating collection full of all kinds of surprises” (Minneapolis Star Tribune). Taxi rank . . . toad in the hole . . . dustman . . . fancy dress . . . American visitors to London (or viewers of British TV shows) might be confused by these terms. But most Britons would be equally puzzled by words like caboose, bleachers, and busboy. In Divided by a Common Language, Christopher Davies explains these expressions and discusses the many differences in pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary between British and American English. He compares the customs, manners, and practical details of daily life in the United Kingdom and the United States, and American readers will enjoy his account of American culture as seen through an Englishman’s eyes. Davies tops it off with an amusing list of expressions that sound innocent enough in one country but make quite the opposite impression in the other. Two large glossaries help travelers translate from one variety of English to the other, and additional lists explain the distinctive words of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. This delightful book is the ideal companion for travelers—or anyone who enjoys the many nuances of language.

Book Across the Pond An Englishman s View of America

Download or read book Across the Pond An Englishman s View of America written by Terry Eagleton and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-06-24 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An irreverent trip through American culture by a critic who “cracks jokes as easily as one would crack walnut shells” (Washington Post). Americans have long been fascinated with the oddness of the British, but the English, says literary critic Terry Eagleton, find their transatlantic neighbors just as strange. Only an alien race would admiringly refer to a colleague as “aggressive,” use superlatives to describe everything from one’s pet dog to one’s rock collection, or speak frequently of being “empowered.” Why, asks Eagleton, must we broadcast our children’s school grades with bumper stickers announcing “My Child Made the Honor Roll”? Why don’t we appreciate the indispensability of the teapot? And why must we remain so irritatingly optimistic, even when all signs point to failure? On his quirky journey through the language, geography, and national character of the United States, Eagleton proves to be at once an informal and utterly idiosyncratic guide to our peculiar race. He answers the questions his compatriots have always had but (being British) dare not ask, like why Americans willingly rise at the crack of dawn, even on Sundays, or why we publicly chastise cigarette smokers as if we’re all spokespeople for the surgeon general. In this pithy, warmhearted, and very funny book, Eagleton melds a good old-fashioned roast with genuine admiration for his neighbors “across the pond.”

Book Guide to American English

Download or read book Guide to American English written by L. M. Myers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to American English The second edition of this book was a very thorough revision of the first. In this third edition the changes in the text are not nearly so extensive. The chapter on the research paper has, I think, been considerably improved. Otherwise there are only a few minor changes and corrections. But if the author has done comparatively little for this edition, others have done much. The less expensive format has obvious advantages, especially for a textbook containing so many exercises; and the exercises themselves, by my colleague George Herman, are a very definite improvement. For each chapter there are two kinds: a number, most often twenty-five, of sentences or comparable items to be worked on, and two or three more general questions for class discussion or assigned writing. They are so skillfully devised to help students understand and practice what the text preaches that I am embarrassed when I compare them with my own earlier attempts. A writer who reissues a book with so little modification of his own is bound to examine very closely his reasons for so doing. Is he moved (or unmoved) by laziness, complacency, or pure ignorance of what has been taking place during the intervening time? I can speak to the first two possibilities quite simply. Book excerpt: Though happy enough with his lot, Michael Simkins has never truly shaken the nagging doubt--helpfully upheld by his partner Julia--that he somehow lacks worldly sophistication. While she spent her teenage years as a nanny on a boat moored at Cannes, his utter lack of travel experience (Weymouth, Cleethorpes, and a day trip to Dieppe) still has the power to shock people into leaving dinner parties early. So as he hits middle-age, Michael takes up the challenge of broadening his horizons. He decides to improve himself in the same way English gentlemen lacking refined edges have for centuries: by learning from their more cultured French neighbours. Michael, an English provincial ingenue, sets off to discover just what the Gallic nation can teach him and the rest of us Anglo-Saxons about living the good life. Armed only with 50 Useful Phrases in French, he waits to see if his odyssey from La Manche to the Riviera will finally turn him from the scotch-egg eating spawn of Anne Widdecombe and John McCririck into the champagne-sipping love child of Serge Gainsbourg and Catherine Deneuve. Julia is saying a prayer for him at Lourdes.
