Book The English of Savitri

Download or read book The English of Savitri written by Shraddhavan and published by Auro e-Books. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1980, Shraddhavan has been teaching English in Auroville through close readings of Sri Aurobindo’s revelatory epic Savitri: a legend and a symbol. In August 1998 these classes were resumed at Savitri Bhavan, with a growing number of students, including young Tamil teacher-trainees from the Arul Vazhi School located in Promesse, Auroville. These classes were given the name ‘The English of Savitri’ and they concluded in May of 2009 as this group reached the end of the poem. This book is based on the transcripts of a new series of classes given by Shraddhavan between August 2009 and October 2010, which have been edited for conciseness and clarity, while aiming to preserve some of the informal atmosphere of the course. Edited transcripts of these classes began to be published serially in the Bhavan’s journal of Study Notes on Savitri, ‘Invocation’, from issue 32 onwards, since it was felt that they may be of interest to a wider audiance. They are now being published in book form in several volumes by Yukta Prakashan publishers of Vadodara. This suggested the idea of collecting the original English articles into a book form as well. This is the first such volume, covering all the five cantos of Book One of the poem, ‘The Book of Beginnings’.

Book excerpt: The Sophia Secrets A magical realism novel Writer Anne Demaree escapes an unhappy life in New Mexico when she moves to a bungalow by the sea in Southwest Harbor, Maine. With a sense of urgency, she escalates her elder years quest, a final search for meaning. Before she settles down in Maine, she and a friend take off on a two-week trip to a Kali Temple in India. Shaken to the core by her experience, Anne is determined to dig into the essence of this controversial Hindu deity. She must align with somebody or something as least as powerful as her uncontrollable anger, so she can heal. Anne neglects to take into account that you do not ask for Kali’s help without accepting the consequences. Kali is, after all, the goddess of transformation. One stormy morning on a trail by the sea, Anne stumbles upon a mysterious old woman who tells Anne she must follow her, because Anne is running out of time. Is the old woman real? Anne asks around, but no one has heard of her. Nevertheless, the old woman keeps showing up in the most unusual places and times, telling poignant stories, delivering exotic experiences, and sometimes with accompanying visions of goddesses. Meanwhile, Anne has found a tender love interest in Adam Waterfield, a retired philosophy professor and Cranberry Island native. A crisis with Adam’s drug-troubled grandson soon finds Anne at dead center of the turmoil. Falling in love and helping a teen boy were not part of Anne’s plan. Will these two throw her completely off track or be somehow vital to her elder journey? “I didn’t want it to end.” — Rosalie Kell, Graphic Artist

Download or read book Wisdom Quotes from Savitri written by Aurobindo Ghosh and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may not be a wise proposition to speak of Wisdom Quotes based on Sri Aurobindo's epic Savitri. Certainly it cannot be in any conventional or conformist sense. This is particularly important when we recognize that his Savitri is a supreme revelation, is a presentation of his epochal realizations, that it is a Yogi-Poet's luminous vision and work, that it embodies in itself the abounding omniscient Word coming from some high transcendental Source. Therefore to reduce or present Savitri in terms of quotes could easily amount to its trivialization. There is a danger in it. Yet there are on occasions wonderful crimson seeds of exceptional quality and distinction which stand out in their flowering possibilities to give rise to new life and zest and pursuit, of truth and beauty, as much as of power and light and joy. This could be encouraging to us. We have attempted here a selection in the manner of aphoristic quotations, of single-lines, unrhymed couplets and quatrains or stanzas. No doubt, in the poem these occur naturally in their substantial richnesses, exist with their vivid textual background and relevance, in their respective fitting contexts; isolating them from it might therefore appear somewhat unusual or atypical if not weird. Yet they do carry in them a firm and forceful universality which is context-free, which is what aphorismos is. In the present work these have been put in the running sequence as they appear in the main body of the poem. It must also be pointed out that there are quite a number of lines or passages of various lengths which could have been valuably included in any proper representative book of quotations; however, this is generally ruled out because of the indicative pronominal references in them which do not easily lend themselves to form a part of an unbounded set. Here are some examples illustrating their character: In atomic parcellings of the Infinite Near to the dumb beginnings of lost Self, He felt the curious small futility Of the creation of material things. When all thy work in human time is done, The mind of earth shall be a home of light, The life of earth a tree growing towards heaven, The body of earth a tabernacle of God. But where the silence of the gods had passed, A greater harmony from the stillness born Surprised with joy and sweetness yearning hearts, An ecstasy and a laughter and a cry. Night felt assailed her heavy sombre reign; The splendour of some bright eternity Threatened with this faint beam of wandering Truth Her empire of the everlasting Nought. O human copy and disguise of God Who seekst the deity thou keepest hid And livest by the Truth thou hast not known, Follow the world's winding highway to its source. The Enigma ceased that rules our nature's night, The covering Nescience was unmasked and slain; Its mind of error was stripped off from things And the dull moods of its perverting will. There are in these stanzas pithy concise statements with their universal implications. Thus in "O human copy and disguise of God, / Follow the world's winding highway to its source" is full of desirable instructions and can be a good guide to shape one's life and movement in its truth. But that would be another matter. Here our aim is, apart from for one or two exceptions, to go in the strictness of the original text.
