Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Flora of Sir James Edward Smith, Vol. 5: Class XXIV. Cryptogamia; Part I. Comprising the Mosses, Hepaticae, Lichens, Characeae and Algae Neither relaxation nor repose, however, was sufficient to restore the bodily powers of Sir James Smith: exhausted by long suffering, they sank under the pressure of disease; and the task of completing our national Flora is left to another, who, whatever his talents and knowledge, can never look upon the portion finished by the original author, without the sentiment that it is impossible for the succeeding part to be made equal to it. The very nature of the subject would preclude such a hope; and he would be a bold man, who would venture to entertain the expectation that he could rival a performance which has justly obtained the highest encomiums from the most eminent Botanists of Europe, and which will not fail to be prized, so long as accurate description, conveyed in language singularly elegant and agreeable, shall continue to be estimated as it deserves. Download or read book The English Flora of Sir James Edward Smith Vol 5 written by James Edward Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Flora of Sir James Edward Smith, Vol. 5: Class XXIV. Cryptogamia; Part I. Comprising the Mosses, Hepaticae, Lichens, Characeae and Algae The present Part, or half Volume, is confined to the Orders Musci, Hepaticae, Lichenes, Characew, and Algae. Another Part, containing the second portion of the Volume, will embrace the only remaining Order, the Fungi, and will be published with all the speed consistent with careful execution. The Fungi, as is known by every Botanist, ' constitute an order of immense extent, and one, which, notwithstanding all that has been done by Withering, Sowerby, Purton, Carmichael, and Dr. Greville, must yet be acknowledged as the least understood of all our British Flora. The labour attending the study of these is much increased by their perishable nature, and by the difficulty, almost amounting to an impossibility, of preserving specimens; so that, in many instances, if they are not carefully examined, and described or drawn on the spot, it is in vain to attempt to remedy the deficiency from the contents of an H erbarium. Thus much I have a satisfaction in saying, that the Rev. M. J. Berkeley of Margate, (author of Gkanings of tbc British Algaz, ) has kindly undertaken to prepare the descriptions of the Agarics and some allied Genera; and to Mr. Purton, who has so well illustrated the Fungi in his Flora oft/le Midland Counties, I am indebted for copious ms. Notes, on all the species that have come under his observation. Still, in so extensive and intricate a field, I shall greatly need the indulgence of my fellow-students; and I entreat their assistance, in communicating their remarks, as well as specimens and drawings of the rarer kinds, or of new and dubious ones, from every part of the king dom, particularly from the south of England, which, I have rea son to believe, has been but little explored in this department, and which yet, from its climate, bids fair to be very productive. Book Handbook of the Taxonomic Names Associated with the Non marine Rhodophycophyta

Download or read book Handbook of the Taxonomic Names Associated with the Non marine Rhodophycophyta written by Franklyn Dewayne Ott and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This voluminous publication aims to satisfy a great need of those phycologists who do research on the fresh-water Rhodophycophyta for a compendium which provides quick and easy access to the scientific names associated with this group of little known plants. While relatively small numerically, the Rhodophycophyta may be, in themselves, of little significance, it may be of interest to the reader to note that there are approximately 4000 known species of the Rhodophycophyta and that these are distributed into some 600 genera. The vast majority, by far, are inhabitants of the marine environment. Of this number, however, about 62 genera with an estimated 600 species are found in non-marine habitats. It is on this small group of genera that this contribution is focused. The author intends to accomplish at least five desirable goals. The first of these is a simple alphabetical listing, the Â_quick listÂ_, of the taxonomic of Rhodophycophyta to accommodate the taxa that will give to the user a birdÂ_s-eye view of what may be available herein. The second goal is an alphabetical listing to the complete nomenclatural and taxonomic citations of the included taxa which includes taxonomic name, author, date of publication, journal or book reference. A third goal is to provide a comprehensive bibliography for each of the numerous papers cited in the nomenclatural and taxonomic index. The fourth major objective was to provide to the user an alphabetical index to taxonomic names, enabling the reader to trace the fate of a given epithet, mostly species, varietas and formae through their tortuous journey, for some, which they may have undergone since their initial publication. The fifth and last objective is to review the 62 currently recognized genera of this freshwater group (pp 351-914) to help place these into their respective, contemporary status.
