Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Factories in India 1655-1660 Since extracts from the same document often appear on different pages, it has been thought advisable to concentrate the references in a table at the end of the volume. This not only saves a large number of footnotes, but also avoids distracting the reader's attention with information probably not wanted at the moment. The materials for the volume have been found mostly amongst the India Office records, particularly the Letter Books, the Original Correspondence, and the various sections of the Factory Records. Use has also been made of a volume containing copies of letters received at Madras, 1658-60, which is now among the Rawlinson mss. In the Bodleian Library. The only Indian Record Office possessing documents of the period is that at Bombay; and the Bombay Government kindly furnished transcripts of these for the purpose of the present work. The transcripts have been added to the Surat section of the Factory Records as vol. 102 B. Throughout the volume the factories in Persia receive almost as much attention as those in India. This is in accordance with the practice in the previous volumes; and in fact English trade in the former country was so closely bound up with the fortunes of the Surat Presidency (of which those factories formed part) that no other course would be satisfactory. In making quotations, contractions have been extended and modern practice has been followed in regard to punctuation, capital letters, and the use of u for v and of j for i. This fleet returned early in April, and in the same month was dispatched on the usual cruise to the southwards. One of the four - the Hart - was, however, to quit the rest near Ceylon and proceed to the Coromandel Coast; while a second - the Discovery was to be dispatched to the same destination at a later period of the voyage. The remaining two were to effect a junction at the Comoros with the fleet expected from England and return with them; but Weddell had orders to diverge from the rest to Gom broon, in order to pick up some silk which was expected to be lying there awaiting transport to Surat. The resul tant loss of life was terrible; and amongst other effects was a general cessation of cultivation and manufacture, entailing a corresponding shrinkage in the export trade. The English merchants suffered with the rest, but with characteristic energy they turned their attention to the development of fresh sources of profit. On the one hand, they found employment for their ships in carrying Indian and Persian merchants with their goods to and from Gom broon; on the other, they made special efforts to Open up trade in the Bay of Bengal, establishing factories at Hari harpur (near Cuttack) and at Balasore. A further (though less direct) result of the diminution Of commerce caused by the famine was the commencement of negotiations for an understanding with the Portuguese, which would, it was hoped, not only extend the area of English trade, but also lead to a considerable reduction of expense.
