Download or read book Language in Use written by Loredana Frăţilă and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language in Use: The Case of Youth Entertainment Magazines is a collection of seven studies by several Romanian, Bulgarian and Slovenian linguists on the discourse of entertainment magazines targeted at young readers, and published in their respective countries. The starting point of the seven studies was the idea that the discourse specific to the variety of printed media products selected for analysis was characterized by distinctive features and that these features might exert a manipulative influence on the linguistic and social behavior of the targeted readership. The scholars’ initial aim was to validate these hypotheses and to confirm their soundness across countries. However, they hope that, besides suggesting new perspectives on the discourse chosen for analysis and thus filling a gap in the eastern European literature in the field, they may also develop (admittedly, within limits) media literacy in young readers, by equipping them with skills that could transform them from passive media consumers into responsible readers, able to make informed decisions and thus be less vulnerable to the strategies of manipulation employed by those who control information.

Download or read book English in Denmark written by Peter Harder and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 9 takes up the questions -- national, sociolinguistic, strategic, economic and educational -- which arise in relation to the increasing use of English alongside national or vernacular languages, focusing on its use as the language of instruction in Danish Universities. Inevitably, this also makes globalisation a theme of this issue. The dilemmas of the universities, however, have a special character within this wider issue, partly because they are in the frontline of globalisation processes, and partly because they are regarded as having new and enhanced social significance in the post-industrial society. In addition to the academic articles in this issue there is a series of 'position statements' written by some of the major participants in the Danish debate on language policy in the universities. They were invited to state in about 500 words their essential views on the theme. Their contributions give some of the flavour of the argument that has been going on with increasing intensity in Denmark for the past ten years.
Download or read book Language and Identity in the Balkans written by Robert D. Greenberg and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-03-25 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language rifts in the Balkans are endemic and have long been both a symptom of ethnic animosity and a cause for inflaming it. But the break-up of the Serbo-Croatian language into four languages on the path towards mutual unintelligibility within a decade is, by any previous standard of linguistic behaviour, extraordinary. Robert Greenberg describes how it happened. Basing his account on first-hand observations in the region before and since the communist demise, he evokes the drama and emotional discord as different factions sought to exploit, prevent, exacerbate, accelerate or just make sense of the chaotic and unpredictable language situation. His fascinating account offers insights into the nature of language change and the relation between language and identity. It also provides a uniquely vivid perspective on nationalism and identity politics in the former Yugoslavia.
Download or read book Language Policy and Language Education in Emerging Nations written by Robert de Beaugrande and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1998 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been an assumption in the field of English as a foreign language that those who speak the language as natives pronounce the way it should be taught. Most influential figures in the field have been outsiders, and the subject has accordingly not been really defined as the teaching of English as a foreign language, but as the teaching of English to foreigners: quite a different thing. This book discusses the designing of programs for learning which will take the different kinds of foreign-ness into account.

Download or read book Survival and Development of Language Communities written by F. Xavier Vila Moreno and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too small to be big, but also too big to be really small, medium-sized language communities (MSLCs) face their own challenges in a rapidly globalising world where multilingualism and mobility seem to be eroding the old securities that the monolingual nation states provided. The questions to be answered are numerous: What are the main areas in which the position of these languages is actually threatened? How do these societies manage their diversity (both old and new)? Has state machinery really become as irrelevant in terms of language policy as their portrayals often suggest? This book explores the responses to these and other challenges by seven relatively successful MSLCs, so that their lessons can be applied more generally to other languages striving for long term survival.
