Cheap churches are still built, and it is well that they should be where funds are not abundant; but increase of ex perience has shown that ugliness need not be synony mous with economy, and that the First Pointed style properly handled enjoys no peculiar immunity from contingent expenses. Its advocates need no longer fear, nor its antagonists rely upon, the blunders and abortions of the years when Early English was the rage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Nineteenth Century This little book is an attempt to do, on a very small scale, what has not yet been done, so far as I am aware. It may be that the forthcoming work by Mr. F. Warre Cornish will prove to be the adequate and impartial presentation of the subject which is so much needed. I had hoped to have the great advantage of reading it before sending my ms. To the printers, but it has not appeared in time. Of existing books, the only one in my judgment really satis factory is the late Canon Overton's, which has the same title as my own; but it only covers one - third of the century, 1800 - 1833. Works that include the remaining two-thirds are histories Of the Church from an earlier period, and naturally afford but little Space for later events and episodes; while Of these events and episodes the writers seem to think only three or four worth recording, viz. The Oxford Movement, the Revival of Convo cation, and the Essay: and Reviews and Ritual Controversies. One standard book does treat the period more at length; but its omissions are very strange, as my readers will perceive by referring to the footnote on page 51 Of the present volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Worship and Order I have all my life been an interested student of ecclesiastical and ecclesiological questions, so I ventured to publish in the quiet days of 1861 a book upon 'the English Cathedral of the Nineteenth Century, ' considered both as abuilding and as an - institution, and in 1874, at a time of great excitement, to bring out 'worship in the Church of England.' But I had been both before and after these dates, and down to the present day, a writer on the class of questions with which those books are concerned, as well in shorter articles and letters to newspapers, as in essays of the longer sort contri buted to reviews, and in papers read at the annual Church Congresses. The belief had grown up in my mind that the course of events was calling upon me to supplement my former books -with further matter, brought together in the solid shape of a volume. So upon turning back to the various essays which I had published, some with and others without my name, I satisfied myself that by grouping a selection of Congress papers and longer review-articles with regard to their subjects more than to their chronology, I could construct in a somewhat consecutive form a collection which should connect and supplement my former publications.
