Book 400 years across the Ocean

Download or read book 400 years across the Ocean written by Walter Sawyer and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There must be a greater power than all of us. In 1607, an Indian named Squanto was kidnapped from his village. He was taken across the ocean, where he lived with a monk name, Brother Daniel, for fourteen years. His dealings with the monks, learning a new way of life, enabled him to change his outlook on life. Squanto learned the sensitivity of being tactful and sympathetic to others. While Squanto was with Brother Daniel, he met William Bradford and John Carver while staying at the monastery. He escaped to a ship, going back to America in time to meet with the Pilgrims there. In 1608, four hundred English Protestants were exiled to Leiden, Holland. Dissatisfied with the Church of England, they had hopes of reaching the promised land. The reason for coming to America was not for religious freedom but religious persecution.William Bradford (the colonies' governor) wrote, "Advancing the kingdom of Christ to a new part of the world."Squanto found his village wiped out from disease, leaving the huts empty. He suggested the Pilgrims occupy them that first winter; only forty-two Pilgrims survived out of 102.When the Pilgrims landed in America, the Indians began to squabble between each other. Acting as a go-between as tempers escalated, Squanto was quoted as saying: "We live on the same earth." "We live under the same moon." "We breathe the same air." "Why can't we get along?" For the next fifty years, harmony existed between the settlers and the Indians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading into the 400th anniversary of the voyage of the Mayflower, Martyn Whittock examines the lives of the “saints” (members of the Separatist puritan congregations) and “strangers” (economic migrants) on the original ship who collectively became known to history as “the Pilgrims.”The story of the Pilgrims has taken on a life of its own as one of our founding national myths—their escape from religious persecution, the dangerous transatlantic journey, that brutal first winter. Throughout the narrative, we meet characters already familiar to us through Thanksgiving folklore—Captain Jones, Myles Standish, and Tisquantum (Squanto)—as well as new ones. There is Mary Chilton, the first woman to set foot on shore, and asylum seeker William Bradford. We meet fur trapper John Howland and little Mary More, who was brought as an indentured servant. Then there is Stephen Hopkins, who had already survived one shipwreck and was the only Mayflower passenger with any prior Amer- ican experience. Decidedly un-puritanical, he kept a tavern and was frequently chastised for allowing drinking on Sundays.Epic and intimate, Mayflower Lives is a rich and rewarding book that promises to enthrall readers of early American history.

She left from England in September of 1620, carrying 102 English Separatists to a new life, one that came with the freedom to practice their religious beliefs as they saw fit. These Pilgrims had the courage of their convictions. They had already potentially faced execution for practicing their beliefs and now they were willing to uproot their lives, their families, and their homes, to sign contracts of indentured servitude for them and their children - all to find what they called freedom in a foreign land. Inside you will read about... ✓ How Religious Upheaval Shaped American Colonization ✓ The Ship that Launched a Nation’s Future ✓ The Contract and the Crossing ✓ Arrival in America ✓ Early Life in the Colonies ✓ Pilgrims and Puritans ✓ The Ideology that Shaped a Nation Their journey was one of courage and destiny as they forged ahead, crossing an ocean to settle in a harsh environment. They faced storms and dangerous adversaries to get to the New World. There, they built a life based on the values they held sacred, and those values would form the foundation of a new nation almost a century later. This eBook tells the story of their adventure in a concise yet thorough manner that is packed with historical detail and enjoyable to read.
