Book The End of the World is Just the Beginning

Download or read book The End of the World is Just the Beginning written by Peter Zeihan and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller! 2019 was the last great year for the world economy. For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going. Globe-spanning supply chains are only possible with the protection of the U.S. Navy. The American dollar underpins internationalized energy and financial markets. Complex, innovative industries were created to satisfy American consumers. American security policy forced warring nations to lay down their arms. Billions of people have been fed and educated as the American-led trade system spread across the globe. All of this was artificial. All this was temporary. All this is ending. In The End of the World is Just the Beginning, author and geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan maps out the next world: a world where countries or regions will have no choice but to make their own goods, grow their own food, secure their own energy, fight their own battles, and do it all with populations that are both shrinking and aging. The list of countries that make it all work is smaller than you think. Which means everything about our interconnected world - from how we manufacture products, to how we grow food, to how we keep the lights on, to how we shuttle stuff about, to how we pay for it all - is about to change. A world ending. A world beginning. Zeihan brings readers along for an illuminating (and a bit terrifying) ride packed with foresight, wit, and his trademark irreverence.

Book The Beginning or the End

Download or read book The Beginning or the End written by Greg Mitchell and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shocking and significant story of how the White House and Pentagon scuttled an epic Hollywood production. Soon after atomic bombs exploded over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, MGM set out to make a movie studio chief Louis B. Mayer called “the most important story” he would ever film: a big budget dramatization of the Manhattan Project and the invention and use of the revolutionary new weapon. Over at Paramount, Hal B. Wallis was ramping up his own film version. His screenwriter: the novelist Ayn Rand, who saw in physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer the model for a character she was sketching for Atlas Shrugged. Greg Mitchell’s The Beginning or the End chronicles the first efforts of American media and culture to process the Atomic Age. A movie that began as a cautionary tale inspired by atomic scientists aiming to warn the world against a nuclear arms race would be drained of all impact due to revisions and retakes ordered by President Truman and the military—for reasons of propaganda, politics, and petty human vanity (this was Hollywood). Mitchell has found his way into the lofty rooms, from Washington to California, where it happened, unearthing hundreds of letters and dozens of scripts that show how wise intentions were compromised in favor of defending the use of the bomb and the imperatives of postwar politics. As in his acclaimed Cold War true-life thriller The Tunnels, he exposes how our implacable American myth-making mechanisms distort our history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The End of the Beginning presents a chapter-by-chapter interpretation of Joshua and Judges, based on the author’s translation. Johanna van Wijk-Bos accompanies the reader through the story of Israel from the entry into Canaan up to the time of Samuel. van Wijk-Bos weaves together the memories of ancient Israel’s past into a story that speaks to the traumatic context of postexilic Judah. The books of Joshua and Judges were written for education, edification, and entertainment. Some of the stories may exhilarate us, some may appall; all will speak to the imagination if we let them. They show a people forging a path forward into an uncertain future in the hope that God will forgive past failures and begin again with them. Christians enter the stories of Israel’s past as outsiders, while at the same time claiming a bond with the same God. We expect more from the text than lessons of the past intended for a different people. These are not our stories, but we too hope for insight and for a guiding word in our own uncertain future. This is the first volume of A People and a Land, a multi-volume work on the historical books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings.

Book The End of the Beginning

Download or read book The End of the Beginning written by Carlos Martinez (Activist) and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) - a workers' and peasants' state - lasted a mere seventy years. It has been gone for a quarter of a century. Existing socialist states face many of the same external pressures that the Soviet Union faced; future socialist states will too. In addition to interference from the imperialist world, the socialist experiments thus far have faced a number of internal problems: how to maintain economic growth in the face of constantly changing needs and expectations; how to maintain revolutionary momentum through the second, third and fourth generations of the revolution; how to balance a revolutionary internationalist foreign policy with the need to maintain peaceful coexistence with the capitalist world; how to avoid economic and diplomatic isolation and to take advantage of the latest global developments in science and technology. In trying to locate solutions to such problems, the details of the Soviet collapse constitute some of the most important historical data we have available. The more our movement can learn about the Soviet experience, the better prepared we will be to prevent historic reverses and defeats in future, and the better equipped we will be to develop a compelling, convincing vision of socialism that is relevant in the here and now. Carlos Martinez goes back to the legacy of the USSR, traces the lessons to be learned from this crucial socialist experiment and provides a challenging narrative of its collapse.

Book The End and the Beginning

Download or read book The End and the Beginning written by Hermynia Zur Mühlen and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book The Beginning of Everything

Download or read book The Beginning of Everything written by Robyn Schneider and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robyn Schneider's The Beginning of Everything is a witty and heart-wrenching teen novel that will appeal to fans of books by John Green and Ned Vizzini, novels such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and classics like The Great Gatsby and The Catcher in the Rye. Varsity tennis captain Ezra Faulkner was supposed to be homecoming king, but that was before—before his girlfriend cheated on him, before a car accident shattered his leg, and before he fell in love with unpredictable new girl Cassidy Thorpe. As Kirkus said in a starred review, "Schneider takes familiar stereotypes and infuses them with plenty of depth. Here are teens who could easily trade barbs and double entendres with the characters that fill John Green's novels." Funny, smart, and including everything from flash mobs to blanket forts to a poodle who just might be the reincarnation of Jay Gatsby, The Beginning of Everything is a refreshing contemporary twist on the classic coming-of-age novel—a heart-wrenching story about how difficult it is to play the part that people expect, and how new beginnings can stem from abrupt and tragic endings.

Book The End of the Beginning A Bible Study on the Book of Revelation

Download or read book The End of the Beginning A Bible Study on the Book of Revelation written by Virginia Ann Work and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-18 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is this the end of the world? Recent events with the recent COVID-19 pandemic and other catastrophes that have affected the entire world signal that the end days are on our doorsteps. The Judge and King, Jesus Christ, is standing at the door. He is ready to come and shake up this world and judge sin. What can we do? What we should NOT do is give into fear and panic, both tools of Satan. There should be no room for fear in our lives when we trust the One who died for us and loves us with immeasurable love. What we SHOULD do is understand what is happening and will happen in the near future according to God's Word.God has graciously explained in great detail what His plan is for the world in the "last days." The End of the Beginning Bible Study on the book of Revelation is an in-depth Bible study designed to teach the Word of God in a clear, understandable way for both individual and group study. Each lesson consists of information and questions to be answered from the text, both essay and fill in the blank. These questions will direct the student into the text and lead them to compare Scripture to Scripture to better understand it. Included are 4 chapters from the book of Daniel into this study because Daniel lays a foundation to understand the truths in the book of Revelation. This study takes the literal view of Scripture unless the passage clearly states it is a figure of speech. I believe in a literal pre-tribulation rapture of the church, a literal 7-year Great Tribulation with a world dictator called the Antichrist, and a literal kingdom age where Christ will rule the world from Jerusalem for 1,000 years. The Bible must be taken literally to be understood as God meant it to be, and it must be studied diligently and correctly. In this study, you will compare Scripture to Scripture, read the passage in its context, and discover the Greek meanings of the words used. You will learn the customs of the day in which it was written. You will be encouraged to memorize a verse or two of Scripture with each lesson. The book of Revelation is told from God's perspective. You will be caught up with John to the "third" heaven, and witness the incredible and awesome things God does in these last days. Having gained a better understanding of what will happen next, you will find hope and peace about God being in control of world events, and you will experience joy in your daily walk as you grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. My prayer is that this Bible study will lead to a deeper passion for God and for His Word, and that passion will motivate many to share with those who are lost the hope we have in Christ Jesus. What people are saying about the study: "I loved the thorough research into the passage, the questions that caused us to dig deeper, and how the study taught me to compare the text with other passages of Scripture to provide clarity. Learning the Greek meaning behind the English words was special to me. I appreciated the historical background that the study provided and the personal applications. I learned so much from this study that I intend to teach others in my church." Kathy "The lessons were well thought out and well prepared. I have confidence in Virginia's knowledge of the Bible. She patiently taught helped me understand the Bible better." Lois "It was a very in-depth study, and I learned a lot." Donna

Download or read book End of the Beginning written by Phil Craig and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1942 - British troops are stranded in the desert, struggling to hold back Rommel's Afrika Corps. Hitler's armies have reached Moscow, and there are murmurs of discontent at home as new doubts emerge about Churchill's leadership. Elsewhere in Europe there is chilling evidence of the mounting persecution of the Jews, stretching from Poland to the Channel Islands. For many, it seems there is little hope. As in their acclaimed bestseller FINEST HOUR, the authors use the personal testimony of ordinary people - In END OF THE BEGINNING we meet again some of the people first encountered in FINEST HOUR, and get to know many more. Troops fighting for Montgomery in the desert, RAF pilots bombing German towns, a young Jewish woman deported to Auschwitz from Guernsey, the reality of the Home Front - these stories and many more paint a vivid picture of human endeavour in time of war. And, sixty years on from the Battle of Alamein, END OF THE BEGINNING tells the controversial truth about one of the most famous battles in history - the importance of its lesser-known predecessor and the months of bitter in-fighting between the Allied generals. With precision and compassion, Phil Craig and Tim Clayton again debunk the myths and explore the realities of a crucial year in the history of Britain.
