Book excerpt: "Empty Nest, Single Parent: Moving the Needle to a Repurposed Life" is written for the empty nester who also is a single parent and is dealing with both of those roles simultaneously. Each year, parents send their children off to college in what is a bittersweet moment. For some, the bitter part encompasses feelings of sadness, depression, grief and loss of purpose. According to the Mayo Clinic, while 'empty nest syndrome' is not a clinical diagnosis, it is indeed a 'phenomenon'. The book affirms readers' emotions about letting go and moving on to create a life of their own. Each chapter features the author's own sharing of challenges related to living alone, de-junking the house, physical and emotional health, finances, dating and the adult relationship with a son or daughter and ends by offering solutions the readers can apply to their own lives.

It is one of the most challenging phases of parenting, often creating feelings of loss, lack of purpose and crisis of identity which can lead to depression. Yet it receives little recognition. Book The Single Mother s Experience of the Empty Nest

Download or read book The Single Mother s Experience of the Empty Nest written by Amanda Sternitzky Gurny and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research explored the single mother’s experience of the empty nest using the phenomenological research model. Investigation of the literature revealed no existing studies that focused on this phenomenon. Twelve single mothers were interviewed about their experiences after their children moved away from home. The interviews were analyzed through the process of phenomenological reduction; seven textual themes emerged from this process: (a) Emotional Response, (b) Feeling a Void, (c) Feelings of Loss, (d) Self-Discovery, (e) Freedom, (f) Impact of the Children’s Proximity, and (g) Reduction of Support for the Single Mother. Several subthemes were also identified. A structural description of the phenomenon was created using the universal structures of temporality, spatiality, bodyhood, relationship to self, relationship to others, causality, and materiality. The final synthesis illustrated the complex and unique experiences single mothers face after their children move away from home. Findings of this research can be used by clinicians who work with individuals and families in psychotherapy to help single mothers prepare for and navigate through the empty nest.

Book The Empty Nest

Download or read book The Empty Nest written by Karen Stabiner and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartwarming, wry, and often surprising collection of essays about the next rite of passage for Baby Boomers: what happens when the kids leave home As the baby boom generation ages -- the oldest are now turning sixty -- many of them are learning to deal with a whole new way of life, after the last child has finally moved out and they are, once again, alone. It's the same milestone their own parents faced, but as with so many other markers, this generation approaches it in a whole new way. In this fascinating collection, journalist Karen Stabiner has assembled essays from thirty-one writers about their own experience with the empty nest. Parents whose children left home last week join those with grandchildren to explore how life changes once the offspring leave (unless, of course, they move back in again later). They represent the full range of experience -- from traditional nuclear families to single parents to gay parents to grandparents -- with humor, grace, and poignancy.
