Book Thomas Coram

Download or read book Thomas Coram written by H. F. B. Compston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Coram: Churchman, Empire Builder and Philanthropist This sketch was outlined in a lecture delivered before the Theological Society of King's College, London, in October, 1917, and repeated in a revised form in November, at a public meeting of the Ladies' Association of the Royal Colonial Institute. The subject clearly evoked interest, and many of my bearers expressed a hope that the lecture would be published. In the form in which it now appears it has been possible to enlarge considerably the scope of the work; and several documents are now printed for the first time. Readers of Brownlow will see that I am much indebted to his - or rather Brocklesby's - summary; but I have, where possible, had recourse to original documentary and other sources, and my aim has been to use the available material in such a way as to give a comprehensive view of Coram's career as fully as it can, with our present knowledge, be traced. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. That is what we are coming to, did come to in New York this past season with a rush that almost took the breath away from some good people; quite unnecessarily, for on that road lies safety. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A portrait of history’s first complex Christian society as seen through the lens of Christian philanthropy and gift giving As the Roman Empire broke down in western Europe, its prosperity moved decisively eastward, to what is now known as the Byzantine Empire. Here was born history’s first truly affluent, multifaceted Christian society. One of the ideals used to unite the diverse millions of people living in this vast realm was the Christianized ideal of philanthrōpia. In this sweeping cultural and social history, Daniel Caner shows how philanthropy required living up to Jesus’s injunction to “Give to all who ask of you,” by offering mercy and/or material aid to every human being, regardless of their origin or status. Caner shows how Christian philanthropy became articulated through distinct religious ideals of giving that helped define proper social relations among the rich, the poor, and “the pure” (Christian holy people), resulting in new and enduring social expectations. In tracking the evolution of Christian giving over three centuries, he brings to the fore the concerns of the peoples of Early Byzantium, from the countryside to the lower levels of urban society to the imperial elites, as well as the hierarchical relationships that arose among them. The Rich and the Pure offers nothing less than a portrait of the whole of early Byzantine society.

Book Leaders in Modern Philanthropy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Leaders in Modern Philanthropy Classic Reprint written by William Garden Blaikie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaders in Modern Philanthropy The special object of this collection of biographical sketches is to show the connection between a vigorous faith in Christ and the labour of love in the service of man. Philanthropy is not a casual product; it is not a mere outcome of the Zeitgeist, or fashion of the age; its roots are deep in the soil of Christianity; it cannot pick up a living either from Paganism, or Agnosticism, or Secularism, or any other system cut off from the influence of the love of Christ. Though modern philanthropy teaches this lesson in the most emphatic form, it is really as old as Christianity itself. The religions that Christianity superseded were singularly wanting in philanthropy. Neither Greece nor Rome gave encouragement to the spirit that cares for the poor and needy, and seeks to dry up the fountains of human misery. Not that the Greeks and Romans wanted compassion, or were unwilling, on occasion, to make large contributions for the relief of the poor. Roman Emperors, and even rich men in private life, would sometimes make presents of great value to the poorer classes of the citizens.
