It encompasses paintings, calligraphy, bronzes, ceramics, lacquer ware, jades, and textiles exemplifying the finest craftsmanship and imperial taste. The Chinese art book book explores the identities of eight Chinese rulers—seven emperors and one empress—who reigned from the early 12th through early 20th centuries. They are portrayed in a story line that highlights artworks of their eras, from the dignified Song to the coarse yet subtle Yuan, and from the brilliant Ming until the final, dazzling Qing period. Emperors' Treasures examines each ruler's distinct contribution to the arts and how each developed his or her aesthetic and connoisseurship.

Book Emperor Qianlong s Hidden Treasures

Download or read book Emperor Qianlong s Hidden Treasures written by Nicole T. C. Chiang and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stunning reassessment, Nicole T. C. Chiang argues that the famous Qianlong art collection is really ‘the collection of the imperial household in the Qianlong reign’. The distinction is significant because it strips away the modern, Eurocentric preconceptions that have led scholars to misconstrue the size of the collection, the role of nationalism in its formation, the distinction between art and artifact, and the actual involvement of the emperor in assembling the collection. No one interested in Chinese art will be able to ignore the ramifications of this important study. Emperor Qianlong’s Hidden Treasures: Reconsidering the Collection of the Qing Imperial Household argues that the size of the collection was actually smaller than previously stated. Moreover, the idea that the collection put the whole of the empire on display (and thereby promoted political unity) does not square with the reality that most of the collection was hidden away. Instead, the collection was primarily for the emperor’s gaze alone. Chiang further explains that the collection was largely the product of work done by many specialists working at the Qianlong court, noting that the emperor often assumed a more supervisory role. Preliminary drawings, patterns, models, and prototypes of the items made in the imperial workshops also formed an important part of the collection, as they served to establish standardized models used to run the imperial household. The collection was thus both broader and narrower than previously stated. ‘Chiang has identified many misguided assumptions about the Qing imperial collection. In their place, she proposes a new definition of an imperial collection that does not give primacy to art objects. This bold revisionist thesis may be controversial, but it is important and deserves to be read widely for this exact reason.’ —Dorothy Ko, Barnard College, Columbia University ‘Chiang makes a new argument which will contribute to the literature on Qing imperial art. She shows that a distinction should be made between the Qianlong emperor’s activities in commissioning objects from the palace workshop and his activities in accumulating, assessing, and cataloguing objects that went into what she calls the “imperial household collection.” This work will attract wide attention from scholars in art history.’ —Evelyn S. Rawski, University of Pittsburgh

Book excerpt: It all begins on the night of the Poo-yang dragonboat races in 699 A.D.: a drummer in the leading boat collapses, and the body of a beautiful young woman turns up in a deserted country mansion. There, Judge Dee—tribunal magistrate, inquisitor, and public avenger—steps in to investigate the murders and return order to the Tang Dynasty. In The Emperor’s Pearl, the judge discovers that these two deaths are connected by an ancient tragedy involving a near-legendary treasure stolen from the Imperial Harem one hundred years earlier. The terrifying figure of the White Lady, a river goddess enshrined on a bloodstained altar, looms in the background of the investigation. Clues are few and elusive, but under the expert hand of Robert van Gulik, this mythic jigsaw puzzle assembles itself into a taut mystery. “If you have not yet discovered Judge Dee and his faithful Sgt. Hoong, I envy you that initial pleasure which comes from the discovery of a great detective story. For the magistrate of Poo-yang belongs in that select group of fictional detectives headed by the renowned Sherlock Holmes.”—Robert Kirsch, Los AngelesTimes “The title of this book and the book itself have much in common. Each is a jewel, a rare and precious find.”—AtlantaTimes

Book Memoirs of the life exile and conversations of the Emperor Napoleon by the Count de Las Cases

Download or read book Memoirs of the life exile and conversations of the Emperor Napoleon by the Count de Las Cases written by Comte Emmanuel-Auguste-Dieudonné de Las Cases and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-25 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the shattering of the Napoleonic empire in 1815, Count Las Cases had served loyally for many years in the council of state. However, his most important service was to come after he followed his Emperor into exile on St. Helena. During his time with Napoleon on the “Rock in the Atlantic”, he was to write down all that he heard from the Emperor’s mouth, as clear a stream of his thoughts and reminiscences as were ever recorded. He was to eventually publish these entries as the “Memoirs of the life...”, also known as the Mémorial de St. Hélène. They stand as a classic not just of the history of Napoleon’s times, but also of the history of the first year of his banishment. Ranging from his earliest days in Corsica to the ranging battlefields of his career, Napoleon speaks through these pages as in no other of the sources left to us today. Essential reading and the birth of the Napoleonic legend. Author — Las Cases, Emmanuel-Auguste-Dieudonné, comte de, 1766-1842. Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in 1855, New York, by Red Field. Original Page Count – 400 pages. Illustrations — 4.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cherry blossoms blew in the wind, bringing up a thousand layers of snow.Inside the red tent, two stacked figures could be seen in the pair of eyes that were as cold as the night sky and as cold as Ruo Bing's snow. The killing intent on the cold-looking man dissipated bit by bit like an invisible net, enveloping the Phoenix Confinement Arena. The sound of clothes ripping could be heard from within the tent, mixed with the low moans that caused one's blood to boil."If you have no fragrance, the world has no fragrance." The man's voice, filled with a hint of lustful desire, came from the curtain. He heaved a low sigh."Heh ..." The woman's voice was sweet and gentle, like a smile, but also like a sigh. It carried with it a sense of inborn nobility, but it was also mixed with a strange feeling that caused one's heart to waver.A few human figures soundlessly appeared, blocking the pair of eyes that were embracing the night sky.The man in the veil had once said that as long as you came to the palace, he would take his most beloved woman in front of him."On the Phoenix Prison platform, the quilts were like flowers, unfolding layer by layer, as if they were spring water, slowly pouring down from the steps and filling the whole area with cherry blossoms."
