Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout her lifetime, Anthea DeVito has found happiness to be elusive, just like butterflies that are beautiful when we find them, but challenging to hold onto for forever. In an inspiring narrative, DeVito chronicles her search for happiness, meaning, and a purpose in her life as well as the amazing number of tragedies, traumas, and physical hardships she has endured in the process. As she leads others through her varied experiences, DeVito also documents the world’s most significant events over the past sixty years and how they impacted her life as she spent her childhood in Penang, trained to be a nurse and then beauty therapist, owned a shop, navigated through romantic relationships and family dynamics, and experienced many adventures that included falling in a river full of crocodiles and traveling the world. The Elusive Butterfly of Happiness is an inspiring story of survival against all odds as a woman reveals how she overcame seemingly overwhelming challenges to find her purpose.

Download or read book The Unbearable Wrongness of Being written by Frank Mosca and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-02-07 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unbearable Wrongness of Being is an exploration of the Option Method perspective through the device of literary vignettes taken from classic literature and altered to create an Option dialogue in each story. The Option Method is a way to let go of your unhappiness through a dialogue method of self inquiry. It is a self educational tool that allows you to get to the heart of your assumptions about unhappiness and gradually see reality in a new light. It is practical, compassionate and non-ideological in nature. The fictionalized settings give a fine overview of how this method is utilized. You will see how Option could have operated with Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov and the Grand Inquisitor in particular; how it reflects itself in Tolstoy's "Death of Ivan Ilych,"; or in a lost dialogue of Plato, or in a new version of Euripides' Medea, or eavesdrop on an Option discussion with the Buddha. That and more covering themes of Death, the Meaning of History, Love, Hate, Evil etc., are brought to life in the creative setting of the Option perspective at work in the creative process, a process alive in each of us. Join these fiction characters on a journey of discovery and find yourself opening the door to greater joy along with them!
Download or read book Days of Healing Days of Joy written by Earnie Larsen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-06-04 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children of alcoholic or addicted parents may be stripped of hope, courage, and self-esteem. The dysfunctional family is fueled by shame and chaos, stunting children’s relationships and self-acceptance. Adult children of alcoholics and addicts need encouragement to overcome these childhood deprivations. Days of Healing, Days of Joy models a program of serenity, spirituality, and acceptance through its meditations. “Children of alcoholics are set up for their struggles. You are not sick. You got set up.” —Dr. Jan Woititz Alcoholic or addicted parents may become focused on their compulsion while their children fend for themselves in a dysfunctional household. Without helpful and informative parental guidance, children manage their own personal growth, and their spiritual and emotional health suffers. Children parent themselves, and their innocence dies. Parents with addiction may not have demonstrated healthy connection and love to their children. Adult children of addicts or alcoholics are often shadowed by this disconnect; codependency, self-judgment, and overzealous loyalty darken their doorway. Fortunately, healing and recovery are within reach. In Days of Healing, Days of Joy, Earnie Larsen and Carol Larsen Hegarty share the reflective and peaceful insight needed for growing up again—this time with plenty of love and patience.

Download or read book Heart to Mind Meditations written by Georgie Leesch Skover and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This journey begins deeply within the heart, first thing in the morning, as you settle in to the new day that is beginning. Be there now, for just a moment, quietly, softly, listening. Do you hear that still, small voice? Within your inmost being there is a presence, a voice perhaps, the sound of silent wisdom. This book came from that silence. It is a collection of prayers, poems, and prose that arose from that deep and penetrating stillness. It began with a single verse from the Bible, and each day a different verse gave way to a thought, a sentence, and another that eventually became a prayer or poem. That silent voice within which is the creator of all that is beautiful and unique was the quiet force behind these daily prayers.
Download or read book Strength Through Peace written by Judith Eve Lipton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Costa Rica is the only full-fledged and totally independent country to be entirely demilitarized. Its military was abolished in 1948, with the keys to the armory handed to the Department of Education. Socially, Costa Rica is a success story. Although 94th in the world for GDP, it is in the top 10 on various measurements of health and well-being. Citizens enjoy high standards of living that include universal access to healthcare, education, and pensions. In addition, the country practices sustainable resource management, such as reforestation and the development of solar and wind power, and it expects to be carbon neutral by 2020. Hunting is illegal. 25% of the landmass is parks and reserves. The government supports universal health care, especially maternal and child health. Costa Rica even has a Blue Zone, an area where people live extraordinarily long, healthy lives. To some extent, Costa Rica is simply lucky: it was largely inaccessible, and it had virtually no precious minerals, therefore it was mostly spared the ravages of predatory colonialism. The Costa Rican people made very good social decisions, ranging from an avowed commitment to social democracy at the national level, to local land distribution to develop stable middle class farmers. But Costa Rica's neighbors have not enjoyed nearly as much peace and prosperity. It is unlikely that Costa Rica's demilitarization and its remarkable social success are coincidental; clearly, something special is going on. Through good luck, good leadership, and good decisions, Costa Rica has become arguably the sanest and most progressive country on earth. This book examines how and why Costa Rica is safe and independent without any military at all, and what the rest of us can learn from its success.

Download or read book Little Me Can Live a Big Life written by Peter Allman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the authors favorite New Yorker cartoons depicts Charles Dickens discussing his manuscript with an editor. The editor is saying, I wish you would make up your mind, Mr. Dickens. Was it the best of times or the worst of times? It could scarcely have been both. This humorous message captures the concrete, either-or thinking that can cause a person to get stuck while on his or her journey towards living a bigger life. Peter Allman has written a unique, compelling, yet simple collection of paradoxes that invite the reader to unlock the mystery of living a bigger life that includes the both-and thinking of paradoxes. This book helps the reader to integrate paradoxical truths. Each chapter is drawn from the authors personal experiences as a psychotherapist, adjunct professor of undergraduate and graduate psychology classes, sought-after public speaker, co-founder and president of a non-profit, after-school center for disadvantaged adolescents, husband, and father. The Western mind and the left brain have ignored much of the depth of true spirituality--by ignoring its invariably paradoxical character. Peter Allman does an immense service by holding and yet revealing great paradoxes in a very creative tension. This book could change the way you hear spiritual texts and teachers, and the way you will grow from now on! ?Richard Rohr, O.F.M., author of Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer
