Book The Elizabethan Playhouse and Other Studies

Download or read book The Elizabethan Playhouse and Other Studies written by William J. Lawrence and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elizabethan Playhouse, and Other Studies The genial reception given to my earlier book on the Elizabethan Playhouse has encouraged me to issue this Second Series of studies. My chief aim has been, as before, to throw additional light on the obscurities of the Elizabethan Stage, and to emphasize the remarkable vitality of its conventions by demonstrating how many of them contrived to wind their tendrils round the trunk of early picture-stage dramaturgy. We sometimes forget that if there have been growth and decadence since Shakespeare's time, there has also been a certain measure of continuity. No apology need, I hope, be expressed for the inclusion of one or two papers at the end which lie outside the scope of the main inquiry. They are the result of patient delving, and their existence is justified by the new facts they present. I have also thought it advisable to reprint in amended form in an appendix the chronological list of Elizabethan and quasi-Elizabethan theatres originally published at the end of my first paper in the earlier volume. Corrected by the light of the recent discoveries of Monsieur Feuillerat and Professor C. W. Wallace, this embodies the chief facts known to modern learning about the early playhouses. Of these studies it also requires to be noted that the third, fifth, sixth and eighth are now published for the first time. Book Common Understandings Poetic Confusion

Download or read book Common Understandings Poetic Confusion written by William N. West and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What if at night at the theaters in Elizabethan England more closely resembled attending a rugby match than sitting in a dark, silent audience, passively witnessing the action on the stage, or closer to going to a rock concert than sitting in front of a large or small screen, quietly and distantly absorbing a film or television drama? In this book, West proposes a new account of what happened in the playhouses of Shakespeare's time, and the kind of participatory entertainment expected by both the actors and the audience. Combining the precision of a philologist and the imagination of a philosopher, West performs careful readings of premodern figures of speech--including understanding, confusion, occupation, eating, and fighting--still in use today, but whose meanings for Elizabethan players, playgoers, and writers have diverged in subtle ways in our era. Playing itself was not restricted to the confines of the actors on the stage but pertained just as much to the audience in a collaborative rather than individualized theater experience, more corporeal, tactile, and active, rather than purely receptive and visual. Thrown apples, smashed bottles of beer, and lumbering bears--these and more contributed to both the verbal and physical interactions between players and playgoers, creating circuits of exchange, production, and consumption, all within the confines of the playhouse. West's account of the experience of the playhouse shows more affinity--and continuity--with more raucous, unruly medieval drama than previous literary critics have allowed. It will be of interest to a wide audience, actors, directors, and scholars included"

Book The Elizabethan Playhouse and Other Studies

Download or read book The Elizabethan Playhouse and Other Studies written by W. J. Lawrence and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The author was a pioneer in the field in which he is now an authority. He is not concerned with the drama or with acting. "Instead he is interested in the physical conditions and stage conventions of the Elizabethan playhouse.... In bringing together his papers and studies into the present volume, Mr. Lawrence has striven especially to illustrate not only the rise and progress of the 'Platform stage,' but also the degree to which its characteristics coalesced with and influenced the 'Picture stage.' 'It will be found, I think, that these studies embody full details of the evolution of the English theatre in its primary and secondary stages, or, in other words, from its inception in the inn-yards until the close of the seventeenth century. In them some attempt has been made to indicate what features were indigenous and what derivative.' "Into the eleven separate papers that make up his volume, Mr. Lawrence has gathered a wide variety of information about the Elizabethan playhouse." —The Boston Transcript "The essays are written with verve and bear the mark of diligent preparation. That they lead to rather few definite conclusions Is perhaps due more to the broad field they seek to cover than to any lack of critical acumen In the author." —The Dial "The first article Is the best summary yet published of our information In regard to the stage conditions of the time. As regards the author's general views concerning the Elizabethan stage, one may say that he is altogether uninfluenced by recent writers who are inclined to claim for Elizabethan staging a larger element of pictorial illusion than was once thought possible, and who In other respects minimize to a certain extent the archaic features of the stage of the period. The volume is beautifully printed, and its value is enhanced by a series of admirable Illustrations." —The Nation "Profoundly scholarly work." —The N. Y. Times "This volume is packed with discovery. Their riches would furnish forth—they probably will furnish forth—the popular historian's book bazaar for the next ten years. Some day Mr. Lawrence will receive his due. —The Saturday Review
