Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Elevator Effect: Contact and Collegiality in the American Judiciary presents a comprehensive, first of its kind examination of the importance of interpersonal relationships among judges for judicial decisionmaking and legal development. Regarding decisionmaking, the authors demonstrate that more frequent interpersonal contact among judges diminishes the role of ideology in judicial decisionmaking to the point where it is both substantively and statistically imperceptible. This finding stands in stark contrast to judicial decisionmaking accounts that present ideology as an unwavering determinant of judicial choice. With regard to legal development, the book shows that collegiality affects both the language that judges use to express their disagreement with one another and the precedents they choose to support their arguments. Thus, the overriding argument of The Elevator Effect is that collegiality affects nearly every aspect of judicial behavior. The authors draw on an impressive and unique original collection of data since the American founding to untangle the relationship between judges' interpersonal relationships and the law they produce. The Elevator Effect presents a clear and highly readable narrative backed by analysis of judicial behavior throughout the U.S. federal judicial hierarchy to demonstrate that the institutional structure in which judges operate substantially tempers judicial behavior"--

Book excerpt: Before skyscrapers forever transformed the landscape of the modern metropolis, the conveyance that made them possible had to be created. Invented in New York in the 1850s, the elevator became an urban fact of life on both sides of the Atlantic by the early twentieth century. While it may at first glance seem a modest innovation, it had wide-ranging effects, from fundamentally restructuring building design to reinforcing social class hierarchies by moving luxury apartments to upper levels, previously the domain of the lower classes. The cramped elevator cabin itself served as a reflection of life in modern growing cities, as a space of simultaneous intimacy and anonymity, constantly in motion. In this elegant and fascinating book, Andreas Bernard explores how the appearance of this new element changed notions of verticality and urban space. Transforming such landmarks as the Waldorf-Astoria and Ritz Tower in New York, he traces how the elevator quickly took hold in large American cities while gaining much slower acceptance in European cities like Paris and Berlin. Combining technological and architectural history with the literary and cinematic, Bernard opens up new ways of looking at the elevator--as a secular confessional when stalled between floors or as a recurring space in which couples fall in love. Rising upwards through modernity, Lifted takes the reader on a compelling ride through the history of the elevator.

Book Effect of Hinge moment Parameters on Elevator Stick Forces in Rapid Maneuvers

Download or read book Effect of Hinge moment Parameters on Elevator Stick Forces in Rapid Maneuvers written by Robert T. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: The importance of the stick force per unit normal acceleration as a criterion of longitudinal stability and the critical dependence of this gradient on elevator hinge-moment parameters have been shown in previous reports. The present report continues the investigation with special reference to transient effects for maneuvers of short duration. The analysis made showed that different combinations of elevator parameters which give the same stick force per unit acceleration in turns give widely different force variations during the entries into and recoveries from steady turns and during maneuvers of short duration such as abrupt pull-ups.

Book Small Unmanned Fixed wing Aircraft Design

Download or read book Small Unmanned Fixed wing Aircraft Design written by Andrew J. Keane and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small Unmanned Fixed-wing Aircraft Design is the essential guide to designing, building and testing fixed wing UAVs (or drones). It deals with aircraft from two to 150 kg in weight and is based on the first-hand experiences of the world renowned UAV team at the UK’s University of Southampton. The book covers both the practical aspects of designing, manufacturing and flight testing and outlines and the essential calculations needed to underpin successful designs. It describes the entire process of UAV design from requirements definition to configuration layout and sizing, through preliminary design and analysis using simple panel codes and spreadsheets to full CFD and FEA models and on to detailed design with parametric CAD tools. Its focus is on modest cost approaches that draw heavily on the latest digital design and manufacturing methods, including a strong emphasis on utilizing off-the-shelf components, low cost analysis, automated geometry modelling and 3D printing. It deliberately avoids a deep theoretical coverage of aerodynamics or structural mechanics; rather it provides a design team with sufficient insights and guidance to get the essentials undertaken more pragmatically. The book contains many all-colour illustrations of the dozens of aircraft built by the authors and their students over the last ten years giving much detailed information on what works best. It is predominantly aimed at under-graduate and MSc level student design and build projects, but will be of interest to anyone engaged in the practical problems of getting quite complex unmanned aircraft flying. It should also appeal to the more sophisticated aero-modeller and those engaged on research based around fixed wing UAVs.

Book Mechanical Similitude and Turbulence

Download or read book Mechanical Similitude and Turbulence written by Theodore Von Kármán and published by . This book was released on 1931 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with the theory of the vortex street which enables the reproduction of the mechanism of the form resistance with suitable approximation under stated conditions, although such a resistance is precluded in a fluid which is perfectly inviscid. Disregarding for the present the origination of the vortex, the stream attitude in the wake of the body may be described approximately correct by the representation of individual vortices, without transgressing the law governing the motion of such vortices in an ideal fluid. Another striking example is the theory of the induced drag of wings, which likewise shows the extent of applying the vortex equations without overstepping the bounds of the dynamics of ideal fluids.

Book Effect of Brake Forming in Various Tempers on the Strength of Alclad 75S T Aluminum alloy Sheet

Download or read book Effect of Brake Forming in Various Tempers on the Strength of Alclad 75S T Aluminum alloy Sheet written by Walter Woods and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of presented of tests to determine the effect of brake forming in various tempers on the strength of Alclade 75S-T aluminum-alloy sheet in the direction parallel to the brake. The tensile and compressive strengths of Alclad 75S-T sheet, formed in the O and W tempers, were either increased or little affected as compared with those of similarly treated unformed material. When Alclad 75S-T sheet "as received" was formed, however, the tensile yield stress was reduced about 7 percent for the with-grain direction and 1 percent for the cross-grain direction, whereas the tensile ultimate and compressive yield strength stresses were increased somewhat. The elongation was always slightly reduced as a result of forming.
