Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Moral Science: Theoretical and Practical The treatise now offered to the public was written primarily for the use of college and university students in their preparation for the class-room. It supposes some familiarity with psychological and philosophical studies, and a willingness to think closely and earnestly concerning the important questions which relate to man's duties and his moral responsibility. In preparing this volume, the author has endeavored to meet the wants of those students and readers, who, though somewhat mature in their philosophical thinking, and disciplined in their intellectual habits, still require expanded definitions and abundant illustrations, involving more or less of repetition. Had it been his design simply to state and defend his own views of the theory and practice of morals, in a strictly scientific form, he would have written a somewhat different book. It is not, and was not designed to be, in form a scholastic treatise; although it takes cognizance of both the psychological and metaphysical foundations of ethics, and aims to trace all its conclusions to ultimate facts and principles. Book excerpt: Francis Wayland's The Elements of Moral Science, first published in 1835, was one of the most widely used and influential American textbooks of the nineteenth century. Direct and simple in its presentation, the book was more a didactic manual than a philosophic discussion of ethical problems. But because of its success, and because it set the tone and form for so much educational writing that was to follow, this first important American textbook in moral philosophy is now of great value as a document in the history of education. The book grew naturally out of the lectures Wayland prepared for the senior course in moral philosophy he taught as President of Brown University beginning in 1827. Courses of this kind were common at the time. As an undergraduate at Union College, Wayland himself had taken one under President Eliphalet Nott, who was to become his lifelong supporter. Loosely organized, such courses gave the college president, most often interested in the training of character rather than in learning for its own sake, an opportunity to impress his personality and moral views on the seniors before turning them out in the world. Wayland's course at Brown, less rambling than many, was described by a former student as "one garden spot in the waste of the curriculum." In his lectures and, finally, in his book, Wayland stood in opposition to the utilitarian ethics of the eighteenth century which based moral judgments on the consequences of men's acts. He held instead that conscience was a faculty directing man's actions in accordance with moral law. Wayland developed this idea in the first part of his book, called "Theoretical Ethics." In the second part, "Practical Ethics," he established three working principles: the eternal validity of moral law as revealed in the Scriptures, the right of private judgment in accordance with Protestant tradition, and the Jeffersonian republican limitation of the powers of government. These he then applied to moral practice, vindicating and validating the desirable virtues of justice, veracity, chastity, and benevolence. One section of Wayland's otherwise inoffensive text turned out to be highly controversial. Under the heading "Personal Liberty" he discussed the question of slavery, coming at length to the conclusion that the duty of masters to slaves was to free them, while the duty of slaves to masters was to obey them and be faithful to them. In the climate of that time, his recommendation to leave action to the Christian conscience of the individual master was no more acceptable to the growing abolitionist sentiment of the North than to the defensive, proslavery feeling of the South. The Elements of Moral Science went on, nevertheless, to a long and popular life, going through several revisions (in which the slavery section was progressively altered) as well as translations, and selling 100,000 copies by the end of the century. Francis Wayland (1796-1865), Mr. Blau writes, stands as 'a central figure in the first great movement for reform of education in the United States." Ordained first as a minister, he served as President of Brown from 1827 to 1855, advocating a wider, more liberal, more practical curriculum at a time when courses of study were still tightly bound to the classics. In politics anti-expansionist, and a pacifist by conviction, he bitterly opposed the Mexican War and the admission of Texas. His opposition to slavery gradually increased until, on the outbreak of the Civil War, he could write, "Can it be doubted on which side God will declare himself?... The best place to meet a difficulty is just where God puts it. If we dodge it, it will come in a worse place..." This text reproduces the 1837 revision of The Elements of Moral Science. Minor variations from other editions are included as footnotes. Variant versions of longer passages are carried in full in appendices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Moral Philosophy: Comprising the Theory of Morals and Practical Ethics Moral philosophy or Ethics, says Dr. Paley, is that science which teaches men their duty and the reasons of it. One advantage of making this sci ence a study, is, to lead the student to reflect on the nature of the motives by Which he is habitually actu ated, and the tendency of the course of conduct which he is daily pursuing. Although the science should afl'ord no new information in regard to the moral nature of man, nor cast any new light on the path of duty, yet the individual might derive very great benefit from being led frequently and seriously to reflect on the subjects on whch it treats. It is of reflection rather than instruction, that many stand most in need. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics and Moral Science General conditions of the distinction between the theoretical and the practical point of view - The distinction is made more slowly and with greater difficulty when the questions involved appeal to our feelings, beliefs and interests - Examples drawn from physical science, and particularly from medical science. The distinction between science and art, or, more exactly, the distinction between the theoretical and the practical point of view, is, in some cases, simple, in others subtle. It is easily made, as we well know, when the subject with which it is concerned appeals almost exclusively to the intellect, and little, or only indirectly, to the emotions and passions. We easily understand pure mathematics, pure physics, on the one hand, and, on the other, applied mathematics and applied physics. It may be that all science is, as Comte says, born of a corresponding art, and possibly, mathematics themselves in their beginning passed through a period in which acquired truths were only regarded as useful knowledge. At least, for many ages, the geometrician was accustomed to separate the speculative study of mathematics from their application. The example offered by mathematics is of great value for the other sciences. For, whatever the natural phenomena to be studied may be, the more that theoretical research is separated from practical preoccupations, the more certain and fruitful is the application likely to prove. Book The Cambridge Companion to Adam Smith

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Adam Smith written by Knud Haakonssen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Smith is best known as the founder of scientific economics and as an early proponent of the modern market economy. Political economy, however, was only one part of Smith's comprehensive intellectual system. Consisting of a theory of mind and its functions in language, arts, science, and social intercourse, Smith's system was a towering contribution to the Scottish Enlightenment. His ideas on social intercourse also served as the basis for a moral theory that provided both historical and theoretical accounts of law, politics, and economics. This Companion volume provides an examination of all aspects of Smith's thought. Collectively, the essays take into account Smith's multiple contexts - Scottish, British, European, Atlantic; biographical, institutional, political, philosophical - and they draw on all of his works, including student notes from his lectures. Pluralistic in approach, the volume provides a contextualist history of Smith, as well as direct philosophical engagement with his ideas.
