Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As political, economic, and environmental issues increasingly spread across the globe, the science of geography is being rediscovered by scientists, policymakers, and educators alike. Geography has been made a core subject in U.S. schools, and scientists from a variety of disciplines are using analytical tools originally developed by geographers. Rediscovering Geography presents a broad overview of geography's renewed importance in a changing world. Through discussions and highlighted case studies, this book illustrates geography's impact on international trade, environmental change, population growth, information infrastructure, the condition of cities, the spread of AIDS, and much more. The committee examines some of the more significant tools for data collection, storage, analysis, and display, with examples of major contributions made by geographers. Rediscovering Geography provides a blueprint for the future of the discipline, recommending how to strengthen its intellectual and institutional foundation and meet the demand for geographic expertise among professionals and the public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy Bedichek spent most of his life working in the educational field in Texas, but his main interest was always the great outdoors. His first book, Adventures with a Texas Naturalist, was published when he was almost seventy, and his second, Karánkaway Country, appeared three years later. Both were the result of a lifetime of exploring a beloved land, of searching observation, of discussion, debate, wide reading, and reflection. Long out of print, Karánkaway Country is now available in a handsome second edition with a new Foreword by W. W. Newcomb, Jr. Karánkaway Country focuses on the natural history of a strip of coastal prairie lying roughly between Corpus Christi and Galveston and once inhabited by the poorly known and much maligned Karankawa Indians. It serves as home base for an exposition of Bedichek's philosophy, providing a convenient local setting for richly tailored essays on wildlife, soil, human skin, and a variety of other topics suggested by a wide-ranging intellect. Bedichek's philosophy, if it can be reduced to a few words, is essentially that humans must learn to live on peaceful and conciliatory terms with our natural environment.

Book Source Book for the Economic Geography of North America

Download or read book Source Book for the Economic Geography of North America written by Charles C. Colby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Source Book for the Economic Geography of North America There has been a notable increase in recent years in the number of universities and colleges which offer instruction in geography, and especially in the numbers of students who elect courses in the subject. As a result, instructor have been confronted by the difficult problem of providing source materials for the use of their students. At the University of Chicago this problem has been especially critical in the course on the "Economic Geography of North America." Source materials in this field are scattered widely through government reports, magazines, and other publications, of which it has been impossible to provide a sufficient number of copies to meet the needs of large groups of students. Furthermore, much of the original literature is unrelated to a geographic discussion, so that it is impracticable to refer beginning students to it. It is hoped that this book will furnish material for an introductory study of the geography of North America and that it will effectively introduce students to the literature of the subject. At the University of Chicago the course on the "Economic Geography of North America" is the third of three units which comprise the first year's work in geography. The preceding units are "Elements of Geography," which is an analysis of the elements of the physical environment in their relation to life, and "Economic and Commercial Geography," which is organized on a commodity basis. As given here, the course on North America is organized on a regional basis and serves as an introduction to regional geography. It is followed by courses on the other major regions of the world. Pedagogically, it is intended that this course constitute a transition from the earlier courses in which much use is made of a text to later courses without texts, in which the lecture method is employed more or less extensively. As the limitations imposed by a small volume made it impossible to reproduce most of the articles in full, it is hoped that instructors using the book will consult the original sources and, when practicable, refer their students to them. Book J Russell Smith

Download or read book J Russell Smith written by Virginia M. Rowley and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the nineteenth century, revolutionary developments began to take place in American geography. The humanization of the subject proceeded at a rapid pace, as did the application of geography to other fields. The changes were initiated at the college level, particularly in the schools of business, and later permeated the secondary and elementary levels. J. Russell Smith, Geographer, Educator, and Conservationist is a two-fold study of these developments. In part, it is an historical-geographical analysis of the development of human and economic geography in the United States. Essentially, its purpose is to evaluate the role of J. Russell Smith in the evolution of American geographic thought. Through his texts, ranging from the elementary to the college level, and his articles in both professional journals and popular magazines, Smith helped to formulate and publicize the concept, philosophy, and mechanics of human-economic geography. Through his establishment of departments of geography in the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the School of Business of Columbia University, he helped lay the foundation for the training of professional geographers, as well as for the application of geography to the fields of economics and business. Finally his love of the land led him to crusade for the conservation of natural resources and to experiment with new plants and trees which gave promise of saving the land and yielding good economic returns. At the same time, his broad humanitarian vision also led him to support actively such causes as world peace and international citizenship. An extensive bibliography is included as well as a complete listing of all of Smith's writings. His wide range of interests makes this book meaningful, not only to individual readers, but also to many organizations, religious and philanthropic. Colleges and universities as well as the business world will also find this book appealing. Its clear organization, its pleasant style, and its humane concern combine to create a vivid account of an important subject and an excellent man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Geography For several years there has been a widespread demand for a course in general geography in high schools. This book is designed to serve as the basis for such a course. All rational work in general geography must be founded on physiography, and this fact has determined the organization of the material of this book. Physiographic processes and features are treated briefly, however, while their relations to life, arid especially to human affairs, arc developed at greater length. The book has been prepared with the conviction that the chief object in geography teaching should be preparation for everyday life, for citizenship in the widest sense. Hence the authors constantly have sought (1) to make the text explanatory rather than merely descriptive, so that it may afford training in clear thinking; and (2) to emphasize the relations of earth, air, and water to man's activities and interests, so that the knowledge gained may be directly useful. The principles developed have been applied at greatest length to the United States, because this country is of most interest and importance to American students. Furthermore, space forbade the application of these principles in detail to other countries. The larger aspects of economic and commercial geography are covered in connection with such topics as soils, minerals, waterways, water power, harbors, and the distribution and development of industries and cities. It is hoped, therefore, that the book may be found useful by teachers of commercial geography, as well as by those who have sought to "humanize" high school physiography. The illustrations are intended to serve as the basis for classroom discussions and quizzes, and should be studied and interpreted as carefully as the text itself. The questions may be used for written work or for classroom discussion. The answers to most of them are not to be found in the text, but can be reasoned out by students who have followed the text with understanding. The physical maps at the end of the book afford the means of locating most of the places and features mentioned in the text.
