Book excerpt: Kahlil Gibran considered The Prophet his greatest achievement. He said: "I think I've never been without The Prophet since I first conceived it in Mount Lebanon. It seems to have been a part of me....I kept the manuscript four years before I delivered it over to my publisher, because I wanted to be sure, I wanted to be very sure, that every word of it was the very best I had to offer." The Chicago Post said of The Prophet: "Cadenced and vibrant with feeling, the words of Kahlil Gibran bring to one's ears the majestic rhythm of Ecclesiastes....If there is a man or woman who can read this book without a quiet acceptance of a great man's philosophy and a singing in the heart as of music born within, that man or woman is indeed dead to life and truth."

Book Theology of the Prophetic Books

Download or read book Theology of the Prophetic Books written by Donald E. Gowan and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Gowan offers a unified reading of the prophetic books, showing that each has a distinctive contribution to make to a central theme. These books--Isaiah through Malachi--respond to three key moments in Israel's history: the end of the Northern Kingdom in 722 BCE, the end of the Southern Kingdom in 587 BCE, and the beginning of the restoration from the Babylonian exile in 538 BCE. Gowan traces the theme of death and resurrection throughout these accounts, finding a symbolic message of particular significance to Christian interpreters of the Bible.

Book A Prophet Like Moses

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeffrey Stackert
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-07-01
  • ISBN : 0199336466
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book A Prophet Like Moses written by Jeffrey Stackert and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeffrey Stackert addresses two of the oldest and most persistent problems in biblical studies: the relationship between prophecy and law in the Hebrew Bible and the utility of the Documentary Hypothesis for understanding Israelite religion. These topics have in many ways dominated pentateuchal studies and the investigation of Israelite religion since the nineteenth century, culminating in Julius Wellhausen's influential Prolegomena to the History of Ancient Israel. Setting his inquiry against this backdrop while drawing on and extending recent developments in pentateuchal theory, Stackert tackles the subject through an investigation of the different presentations of Mosaic prophecy in the four Torah sources. His book shows that these texts contain a rich and longstanding debate over prophecy, its relation to law, and its place in Israelite religion. With this argument, A Prophet Like Moses demonstrates a new role for the Documentary Hypothesis in discussions of Israelite religion. It also provides an opportunity for critical reflection on the history of the field of biblical studies. Stackert concludes with an argument for the importance of situating biblical studies and the study of ancient Israelite religion within the larger field of religious studies rather than treating them solely or even primarily as theological disciplines.

Book The Prophet and the Sage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian M. Koning
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2023-03-29
  • ISBN : 166676583X
  • Pages : 115 pages

Download or read book The Prophet and the Sage written by Brian M. Koning and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-03-29 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Job and Habakkuk represent the Bible's most focused interlocutors on the concepts of justice and theodicy. Both works center upon men chosen by God who see and suffer evil (Job 1:8, cf. Hab 1:1). Both books record the cries of these men as they wrestled to make sense of the world in which they lived (Job 3, cf. Hab 1:2-4). While they have a passing similarity, what if there is something more fundamental to their connection? What if these books are not merely two unconnected discourses on suffering, but linked in a significant way? By examining the texts themselves, this study explores the possibility that a textual relationship exists between portions of Habakkuk and Job and how the underlying transformation of Job's theodicy shapes Habakkuk's dialogue with God.

Book The Prophet Amos Speaks to America

Download or read book The Prophet Amos Speaks to America written by Bruce G. Epperly and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prophet Amos is known for fiery messages directed at the elites of the northern kingdom of Israel in ancient times. Can this prophet also speak to us in America today? This book looks at the message that Amos proclaimed and applies it to parallel situations in modern America. Issues such as the worship of wealth (greed), privilege, and elites living off the labor of others are more similar in these two times and places than one might initially assume. How can we respond as people of faith to the evils of our own time? Are we responsible to notice and take action? Is taking such action part of our faith? If we listen to the prophet Amos, the answer is a resounding “yes.” God cares about the weak, the oppressed, and the downtrodden, and looks to those with the means to help implement change. We are truly asked to take responsibility for the well-being of our neighbor. Christians would be especially challenged by this book and the message of the prophet Amos, because so much of that message was also proclaimed by Jesus, who based judgment on how one treated the least, rather than those who are great. With study and thought questions with each chapter, and an abundance of suggestions for practical action, this book is a great tool to use in a church-wide study combined with a call to action.

Book A Prophet Mighty in Deed and Word

Download or read book A Prophet Mighty in Deed and Word written by Jeff S. Kennedy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Jesus, the revolutionary figure who changed the world, struggle to read a scroll? A growing number of scholars think so. Luke’s account of Jesus reading in the synagogue (Luke 4:16–30) is routinely challenged today in academia. The claim is that Luke either fabricated the account outright or relied upon a mistaken social memory of Jesus reading in the synagogue. Accordingly, Jesus has been recast as an illiterate peasant or semi-literate artisan unable to read and teach the way Luke portrays. In A Prophet Mighty in Deed and Word, Jeff Kennedy offers a fresh perspective. He contends that Luke’s “reading Jesus” wasn’t an attempt to appeal to the cultured sensibilities of his Greek audience, who preferred literate philosophers over illiterate carpenters. Instead, it reflects Jesus’ self-understanding as Israel’s prophet-sage, anointed to read and proclaim the year of Yahweh’s favor. Jesus announces a shocking and provocative message for unbelieving Israel, and he does so with a singular authority. This incident sparks escalating tensions between Jesus and his countrymen, resulting in Christ’s glorification through suffering. And Luke tells us that suffering began in Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth.

Book The Prophet s Heir

Download or read book The Prophet s Heir written by Hassan Abbas and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and legacy of one of Mohammad’s closest confidants and Islam’s patron saint: Ali ibn Abi Talib Ali ibn Abi Talib is arguably the single most important spiritual and intellectual authority in Islam after prophet Mohammad. Through his teachings and leadership as fourth caliph, Ali nourished Islam. But Muslims are divided on whether he was supposed to be Mohammad’s political successor—and he continues to be a polarizing figure in Islamic history. Hassan Abbas provides a nuanced, compelling portrait of this towering yet divisive figure and the origins of sectarian division within Islam. Abbas reveals how, after Mohammad, Ali assumed the spiritual mantle of Islam to spearhead the movement that the prophet had led. While Ali’s teachings about wisdom, justice, and selflessness continue to be cherished by both Shia and Sunni Muslims, his pluralist ideas have been buried under sectarian agendas and power politics. Today, Abbas argues, Ali’s legacy and message stands against that of ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and Taliban.
