Download or read book The Eighth Pacific Rim Conference on Stellar Astrophysics written by Boonrucksar Soonthornthum and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Pacific Rim Conference on Stellar Astrophysics, PRCSA, is a series of conferences which initially focused on binary star research, yet over the years it has grown wider in scope to include topics regarding the most fundamental building blocks of modern astronomy and astrophysics. Since its inception in 1985 each conference has been held in a country on the Asian Rim of the Pacific. In the most recent decade the conference has been held every three years. The 8th PRCSA was held in Phuket, Thailand in May 2008. Although it is called the "Pacific Rim" conference series, the participants are not restricted to scientists from Pacific Rim countries. This conference has attracted nearly 100 participants from 23 countries from far regions of the world. The 2008 conference also served another important purpose: to honor Prof. Kam-Ching Leung for his contribution in supporting the development of astronomy in Asia, particularly in Thailand. The proceedings of this conference are published in this volume and include contributions on stars, star formation, novae, supernovae, compact objects, binary stars, cataclysmic variables, variable stars, binary and multiple star systems, brown dwarfs and planetary companions, stars clusters and large-scale surveys."--Publisher's website

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Papers from an August 1999 meeting are arranged in sections on the present and future of large-scale surveys, variability of high- luminosity stars, cepheids and RR Lyrae stars, the Blazhko phenomenon, theoretical models of classical pulsating stars, variables close to the main sequence, and pulsating white dwarfs and subdwarfs. Specific topics include nonradial modes in RR Lyrae stars, nonlinear pulsations of convective stellar models, oscillation of rapidly rotating stars, and instabilities in very massive stars. Szabados is affiliated with Konkoly Observatory of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Hungary. Kurtz is affiliated with the department of astronomy at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Book excerpt: Contains articles based on talks presented at an October 1999 workshop, discussing developments in the study of solar flares. Emphasis is on work carried out at high energies and on new data anticipated from the High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (HESSI). Themes are HESSI and related solar physics, energetic particles and theories of particle acceleration, X-rays, radio emission, and Gamma rays. Specific topics include stochastic particle acceleration in solar flares, flare loop geometry, understanding energetic flare particles without numerical codes, radio view of particle acceleration and complementarity with HESSI, and the chromospheric response to particle beams during a gamma-ray flare.
