Book excerpt: The crucial element of this book constitutes the synthesis of cultural dimensions from existing cultural taxonomies, extended by the operationalization of the eight identified Universal Dimensions of Culture (UDCs) into a questionnaire. First, an extensive Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is pursued to identify the current state of research, demonstrating the research gap on a unified approach for classifying national cultures into cultural dimensions. Eight assumptions displaying the eight UDCs are derived from the results of the SLR. Subsequently, an evaluation and selection framework for identifying the research base of comparable existing cultural taxonomies is developed. A research base of 11 cultural taxonomies and 50 cultural dimensions is retrieved. These serves as the basis for developing the eight UDCs, following a synthesis process and protocol. The eight UDCs are operationalized into a questionnaire, which is extensively pre-tested by experts and in the field. An example country study for Germany, Canada, and Brazil is conducted, and the corresponding country profiles for the eight UDCs are displayed. The CSPs combine elements of higher education with elements of professional work and illustrate how a teaching-related third mission achieves a socioeconomic contribution through its underlying stakeholder interactions. In Germany, CSPs are a growing phenomenon and, at the same time, a niche in higher education with approximately 100,000 students. Higher education scholars identified CSPs a challenge to higher education governance despite the simultaneous lack of empirical data. In this vein, this book pursues the question of how stakeholders influence the governance of the third mission in the case of CSPs. The study in this book refers to the “prime” example of CSPs at a German university of applied sciences—the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University. The analysis revealed that four stakeholder groups are salient and influence the governance of the CSPs. These include professors, industry representatives, students, and representatives of government and higher education policy.

Yet only in the last decades has the study of well-being become a scientific endeavor. This book is based on the idea that we can empirically study quality of life and make cross-society comparisons of subjective well-being (SWB). A potential problem in studying SWB across societies is that of cultural relativism: if societies have different values, the members of those societies will use different criteria in evaluating the success of their society. By examining, however, such aspects of SWB as whether people believe they are living correctly, whether they enjoy their lives, and whether others important to them believe they are living well, SWB can represent the degree to which people in a society are achieving the values they hold dear. The contributors analyze SWB in relation to money, age, gender, democracy, and other factors. Among the interesting findings is that although wealthy nations are on average happier than poor ones, people do not get happier as a wealthy nation grows wealthier.
