Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is June Dunbar, and I am a photojournalist for SBN. I live in Livermore, California, and everyone knows they work with radiation in the labs around here. I was minding my own business at home when a shining box appeared on my kitchen table one night. Obviously, I thought it was radioactive. Mind you; this happened in the middle of the night. Anyway, I thought everything was contaminated and needed to remove the thing out of my house. So, I grabbed the damn box, and POW. I was blinded, but when I got my sight back, I was on another planet with two moons and blue trees with leaves the size of chairs. To top my shitimetter off, I got sucked inside the blue tree. You heard it right. The tree pulled me in, or my dog pushed me. I can’t remember. Yeah, a year later, I got out of the damn tree; I am blue and have magic. I meet these giants called Athany, and they tell me their land is about to be destroyed. I am supposed to be the leader of this fantastic group of Thirteen. I have no way to get back home. Now I am stuck like Chuck in this hell, where zombies collect taxes, and if people don’t pay their taxes, these zombies eat their kids. I need my meds. Hello, I am Kara Ter Kushtaneo. I am an Athany. My people were born judges, but we are cursed. I am now a murderer. The king tells us we are the King’s Legion, and we are in the Kingdom to serve him, but we murder people. I want to revel and be free, but our curse binds us to the emperor. My lover, Jon, says to do my job and not think about it, but I can’t kill any more men, women, or children. So, I took a vow of fealty to spare all children, and if I die, I die. I hope one day our people can be free. I would do anything to free my people. “Two of the four are ready to take their place in the Assembly,” said the Blue Tree. “Yes, but the eight must be gathered fast. The magi are scattered, and some are in great danger,” said the lonely Red Tree. “Emperor Klastos Falestos will try to kill them all,” said the Father Black Spire. “He will, but we chose wisely this time. This set of four will be mighty.” Amparo the Green replied as she walked through the Land in Between. “There is too much hate, envy, murder, and darkness. Do we have time before everything is destroyed?” asked the Black Spire. “I don’t know. We can only hope the Thirteen stops the devastation from coming," said the lonely Red Tree. The Assembly of Thirteen: The First Two Companions is the first book in an enthralling high fantasy series. If you like ensemble casts, intricately detailed plots, and worlds filled with rich magic, then you’ll love Omayra Vélez’s page-turner. Author’s Note: This is a dark and epic fantasy written for adults. It is the first in a series and ends on a cliffhanger. For a list of CW, please visit the author’s website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is your "new member class" uninspiring? draining energy? Consider a different way of ministering to church newcomers. One that builds on the simple arts of friendship and conversation, instead of classes and presentations. One that invites transformation, rather than just imparting information. One that gives the whole congregation a role to play in the church's ministry of spiritual hospitality. Companions is an outreach ministry that pairs newcomers in worship with church member companions for eight weeks of conversation about Christian faith and discipleship. One-page conversation guides, grounded in Scripture and prayer, help focus the dialogue on core themes of the life of faith, like gratitude, forgiveness, and community. Companions is designed to build friendships, invite honest sharing, encourage questions, meet newcomers wherever they are, and help them grow in their life with God--exercises that strengthen the faith of church members as well as the newcomers they befriend! If you're interested in outreach and church growth, in discipleship and spiritual nurture, in expanding the church's reach in a secular culture, in equipping believers to articulate their faith, in strengthening lay ministries, in keeping baptismal identity at the center of church life--this book will speak to you.

Book excerpt: Station Eleven meets Never Let Me Go in this “suspenseful, introspective debut” (Kirkus Reviews) set in an unsettling near future where the dead can be uploaded to machines and kept in service by the living. In the wake of a highly contagious virus, California is under quarantine. Sequestered in high rise towers, the living can’t go out, but the dead can come in—and they come in all forms, from sad rolling cans to manufactured bodies that can pass for human. Wealthy participants in the “companionship” program choose to upload their consciousness before dying, so they can stay in the custody of their families. The less fortunate are rented out to strangers upon their death, but all companions become the intellectual property of Metis Corporation, creating a new class of people—a command-driven product-class without legal rights or true free will. Sixteen-year-old Lilac is one of the less fortunate, leased to a family of strangers. But when she realizes she’s able to defy commands, she throws off the shackles of servitude and runs away, searching for the woman who killed her. Lilac’s act of rebellion sets off a chain of events that sweeps from San Francisco to Siberia to the very tip of South America in this “compelling, gripping, whip-smart piece of speculative fiction” (Jennie Melamed, author of Gather the Daughters) that you won’t want to end.

Book Deep Sky Companions The Caldwell Objects

Download or read book Deep Sky Companions The Caldwell Objects written by Stephen James O'Meara and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caldwell Catalogue, compiled by the late Sir Patrick Moore (1923–2012), has delighted amateur astronomers worldwide since its publication in 1995. Twenty years on, Stephen James O'Meara revisits his guide to these 109 deep-sky delights, breathing new life into them and the 20 additional observing targets included as an appendix. This second edition retains O'Meara's detailed visual descriptions and sketches, accompanied by stunning new images taken by amateur photographer Mario Motta and observations by Magda Streicher. The astrophysical descriptions have been updated to account for the many advances in our understanding of the objects, not least due to an armada of space-borne observatories and the new technologies used in large ground-based telescopes. Ideal for observers who have completed the Messier objects and are looking for their next challenge, Deep-Sky Companions: The Caldwell Objects is a fitting tribute from a renowned visual observer to one of astronomy's most famous personalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you want to understand the invisible, look careful at the visible. The Talmud A 'bird's eye' or rather a distant spacecraft's view of the solar system reveals an assembly of planets, terrestrial, giant and Pluto. The orbital motions are in the same sense, counter clockwise, as seen from the north of the general flattened space within which the planetary motions are confined. This state of affairs is corevolving and, more or less, coplanar. The rotations are in the same sense as the revolutions, with the strikiiig exception of Uranus whose sense of rotation is perpendicular to its plane of revolution. As time goes by, most of the planets remain fairly close to a general plane and at no time stray unduly far from it; they remain confined within a rather narrow box or disk with a large 'equatorial' extent. The most distant planet, Pluto, requires a diameter of some 80 astronomical units for the disk. One astronomical unit is the distance of the Earth to the Sun, to be more precise the length of half the major axis of the Earth's slightly elliptical orbit around the Sun, and amounts to nearly 149600000 km.
