Book Impact of Particles on Ultraviolet Disinfection of Bacteria in Water

Download or read book Impact of Particles on Ultraviolet Disinfection of Bacteria in Water written by Raymond Edward Joseph Cantwell and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When UV light is applied to disinfect drinking water, particles in the water can conceivably protect embedded microorganisms from disinfection. Earlier studies have investigated how turbidity and particles affect light scattering, and particle-associated protection of cultured microorganisms. Little attention has been devoted to the ability of natural particles in water supplies to protect indigenous microorganisms. This thesis focuses on humic-coating of bacteria, the optical properties of particles and particle-related protection of indigenous microorganisms. A bench-scale proof-of-concept study found that both commercial (AHA) and aquatic humic acid (Suwannee River natural organic matter) appears to coat the surface of cultured bacteria hindering the effectiveness of UV disinfection. Both AHA and Suwannee River NOM were found to offer statistically significant (alpha = 0.05) protection of both E. coli and B. subtilis at concentrations of 50 and 120 mg/L. The concentrations of humic matter used in the study (10 to 120 mg/L) exceed those commonly found in surface waters. The bulk LV254 absorbance by particulate material in 10 surface waters was found to be the same order of magnitude as particles from the secondary effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment facility. This implies that since wastewater particles can offer protection to embedded microorganisms from UV light, it is possible for surface water particles to offer similar protection, at least in terms of the optical properties of the particle material. Particle-related protection of indigenous coliforms in untreated surface water from 3 sources (turbidity from 0.8 to 5.4 NTU) was observed with protection attributed to particles> 11 microm. However, despite this protection, at least 2.5-log inactivation of indigenous coliform bacteria was observed in all waters considered. In another untreated surface water (up to 1.3 NTU), no strong evidence of protection of indigenous coliforms or aerobic spores was found. A final objective of this study was to use 14 months of hourly UVT data to evaluate the USEPA's Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidance Manual recommendations for UVT data collection and analysis for design of UV systems. In terms of sampling frequency, both hourly and daily (but not weekly) UVT data collection provided reliable data for UV reactor design.

Book Advances in Photocatalytic Disinfection

Download or read book Advances in Photocatalytic Disinfection written by Taicheng An and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest results related to photocatalytic inactivation/killing of microorganisms, which is a promising alternative disinfection method that produces less or even no disinfection byproduct. The book is divided into 13 chapters, which introduce readers to the latest developments in the photocatalytic disinfection of microorganisms, examine essential photocatalytic (PC) and photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) disinfection studies, and forecast and make recommendations for the further development of PC and PEC disinfection. Bringing together contributions by various leading research groups worldwide, it offers a valuable resource for researchers and the industry alike, as well as the general public. Taicheng An, PhD, is Chair Professor and Director at the Institute of Environmental Health and Pollution Control, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Guangdong University of Technology, Guangzhou, China. Huijun Zhao, PhD, is Chair Professor and Director at the Centre for Clean Environment and Energy & Griffith School of Environment, Griffith University, Australia. The new edition of Ultraviolet Light in Food Technology: Principles and Applications will present recent understanding of the fundamentals of UV light along with new applied knowledge that has accumulated during the 7 years since the first edition published in 2009. The new edition of the book will have 11 chapters including 2 new chapters--on chemical destruction with UV light and food plant safety—along with 6 chapters greatly expanded and updated.

Book Ultraviolet Light in Human Health Diseases and Environment

Download or read book Ultraviolet Light in Human Health Diseases and Environment written by Shamim I. Ahmad and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the roles and importance of Ultraviolet (UV) light from sun and from man-made UV lamps in our daily life, on health and diseases, also its application in sterilization and treatment. The key words are: reactive oxygen species, DNA damage, UV mutagenicity, skin cancers, polymorphous light eruption, Xeroderma pigmentosum, vitiligo, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndromes, cardiovascular diseases, dermatology, photobiology, photodermatosis, vitamin D synthesis, vitamin D efficiency, water sterilization, blood sterilization, phototherapies, skin tanning and UV dosimeter. The book starts with introduction to UV light and the history of development of UV lamps and its applications. It then moves to describing the interaction of this light with biological components and the production of reactive oxygen species, their roles in cell signaling, cellular defense from foreign invaders, in mutagenesis leading to skin diseases including vitiligo, polymorphous light eruption and various forms of skin cancer. Then it presents the synthesis and importance of UV light and diseases, induced due to the deficiency of vitamin D. Roles of UV light in sterilization, disinfection, phototherapies are depicted in the next part and finally use and abuse of UV light in tanning salon and the availability and importance of use of UV dosimeter are highlighted. The three main focuses of this book are: - Damage to biological systems by UV light leading to certain skin diseases; most importantly skin cancers. - Importance of UV light in the in vivo synthesis of vitamin D when human bodies are exposed to it. - Diseases caused due to the deficiency of vitamin D and the use of UV lamps in phototherapy and sterilization processes. The editor has considerable experience in publishing medical books and has used it critically selecting the matters which will attract the readers from many areas of medical and non-medical fields. It is hoped that the materials presented in this book will give great benefit and will stimulate both novice and expert researchers in the field. The book gives excellent overviews of the current status of research and pointers to the future research achievements. Clinicians, medical general practitioners, technicians and staff working in UV related industries and especially those working in tanning salon should benefit from the information presented in safe handling of this light.
