Book THE EFFICACY OF SCALING AND ROOT PLANING WITH SUBGINGIVAL APPLICATION OF POVIDONE IODINE IN THE TREATMENT OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE AMONG ADULT PATIENTS COMPARED TO SCALING AND ROOT PLANING ALONE

Download or read book THE EFFICACY OF SCALING AND ROOT PLANING WITH SUBGINGIVAL APPLICATION OF POVIDONE IODINE IN THE TREATMENT OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE AMONG ADULT PATIENTS COMPARED TO SCALING AND ROOT PLANING ALONE written by Vladimir Flys and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: The aim of this study was to research the efficacy of Povidone (PVP) Iodine as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in reducing periodontal pocket depth (PPD) compared to scaling and root planing with water, saline, or no rinse in the treatment of chronic periodontitis among adult patients. Material and methods: An electronic search of the databases PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Medline, and Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source (DOSS) were performed from 2010 up to January 2022. A single reviewer identified and selected screened abstracts and titles for possible inclusion, and assessed randomized, controlled clinical trials comparing the additional benefit of PVP-Iodine in the treatment of chronic periodontitis in adult patients. A meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the eight studies included. Results: The pool effects for split mouth design and randomized control trials was significant in favoring the control group. A mean reduction of periodontal pocket depth (PPD) favoring the control group was observed, this reduction was 0.93 mm, (95% CI: 0.66-1.2) (p = 0.00, fig. 2a) for split mouth design studies and a reduction of 0.61 mm, (95% CI: 0.2-1.02) (p=0.004, fig. 2b) for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). There was significant heterogeneity between the split mouth studies and RCTs, i2 = 89.7 and i2 = 83.9, respectively. The studies included administered different concentrations and irrigation frequencies of PVP-iodine, presented with different baseline pocket depths, and evaluated different teeth. Based on the studies included, there was no additional benefit of adjunct use of PVP-iodine with SRP in improving PPD reduction. Conclusion: The adjunctive use of PVP-iodine during scaling and root planing does not improvement pocket depth reduction. However, due to the high heterogeneity between studies more clinical trials should be conducted to evaluate PVP-iodine efficacy in deeper pockets.

Book The Clinical Effectiveness of Subgingival Scaling and Root Planning in Vivo Direct Versus Indirect Root Surface Debridement

Download or read book The Clinical Effectiveness of Subgingival Scaling and Root Planning in Vivo Direct Versus Indirect Root Surface Debridement written by Lewis A. Humbert and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compared the effectiveness of subgingival bacterial plaque and calculus removal following periodontal scaling and root planing using an indirect (closed) versus direct (open) periodontal flap approach. Patients requiring extractions due to advanced periodontal disease were the source of the 60 single rooted teeth comprising the study group. The periodontal status of test and control teeth was evaluated initially by the Gingival Index (G.I.) of Loe and Silness, the Plaque Index (PII) of Silness and Loe and the Periodontal Index (PDI) of Ramfjord. The results favor the open flap procedure by a mean of 20.51% greater effectiveness. However, if one considers the root surfaces by various depths and surface areas, there is no statistically significant difference between the open and closed treatment when the periodontal pocket is greater than 3.0 mm deep. Although there was an 18% mean increase in effectiveness of plaque and calculus removal at depths greater than 3.0 mm by the open approach it did not prove to be statistically significant. This was due to the large variance within group values.

Book Medical Importance of the Normal Microflora

Download or read book Medical Importance of the Normal Microflora written by Gerald W. Tannock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been estimated that there are more microbial cells inhabiting the human body than there are eukaryotic cells of which it is made up. This normal microflora usually co-exists relatively peacefully with the host and does not cause infection. The mechanisms by which this co-existence is achieved are still not properly understood and the interaction between the normal microflora and the host is far from simple. For a variety of reasons, however, this interaction can be disturbed and often results in the microflora becoming pathogens. The study of the diseases then caused is important both in terms of treatment and in terms of contributing to our understanding of the mechanisms by which the normal microflora usually interacts with the host. This title brings together an international list of contributors, all of whom have active research interests in the normal microflora. Each of the chapters reviews current knowledge about a specific group or organism within the microflora and the diseases they can cause. Microflora of the skin, respiratory tract, oral cavity, gastrointestinal system and genital tract are all discussed and the impact of molecular methods on our understanding of the normal microflora is emphasised throughout the book. Medical microbiologists, dental specialists, infectious disease specialists, nutritionists and gastroenterologists will all find this book of immense interest and value, as will epidemiologists, dermatologists and general microbiologists.

Book The Clinical Effectiveness of Subgingival Scaling and Root Planing on Multi Rooted Teeth In Vivo Direct Versus Indirect Root Surface Treatment

Download or read book The Clinical Effectiveness of Subgingival Scaling and Root Planing on Multi Rooted Teeth In Vivo Direct Versus Indirect Root Surface Treatment written by Jay M. Wylam and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic goal of periodontal therapy is the re-establishment of a healthy peridontium through the removal of supragingival and subgingival bacterial plaque, primary etiologic factors associated with peridontal diseases. Scaling and root planing are the two most common techniques used to remove bacterial plaque and calculus from diseased root surfaces. The purpose of this clinical investigation was to determine if visual access to the root surfaces of molar teeth would significantly enhance the ability to remove subgingival deposits of plaque and calculus on external root surfaces and in furcal areas. The results of this study showed an overall increased thoroughness of subgingival plaque and calculus removal for external root surfaces with an open flap approach versus a closed approach.

Book The Impact of Nutrition and Diet on Oral Health

Download or read book The Impact of Nutrition and Diet on Oral Health written by F.V. Zohoori and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most oral diseases are preventable, yet they remain the most globally common noncommunicable disorders, affecting people throughout their lifetime. Lifestyle, including diet and food choice, is central to the occurrence of oral disease. Nutrition and diet can impact the development and status of the oral cavity as well as the progression of illness. Also, poor oral health can influence the ability to eat and, consequently, to maintain an adequate diet and nutrient balance. This book, consisting of 14 chapters, provides current information on the impact of nutrients (macro- and micro-elements and vitamins) and diet on oral health and vice versa (i.e., the impact of oral health on diet/nutrition). It also reviews possible oral health effects of probiotics as well as relationships between genotype and diet, which are important for determining oral disease risk. This book is a helpful resource for under- and postgraduate students. It will also be useful to dentists and nutritionists/dietitians as they integrate nutrition education into medical practice.
