Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Efficacy of Prayer: Being the Donnellan Lectures; For the Year 1877 There is, I suppose, no question in Theology the decision of which more deeply affects man's practical life than this - Has Prayer any effect beyond the mind of the person who prays? If this question be answered in the negative - if we arrive at the conclusion that Prayer has no external efficacy, it is plain that its internal efficacy must speedily disappear. No man's mind can be beneficially affected by the constant repetition of that which he believes to be a mere idle form. Indeed with such a belief he would soon discontinue the practice; and it is far better that he should. My object in the following Lectures is to examine the evidence on both sides of this important question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Pages : 47 pages

Download or read book The Efficacy of Prayer written by Dr. Isaiah Timothy and published by Isaiah Timothy. This book was released on with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Lord is prayer-hearing God for it is written, O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come (Psalm 65:2). He not only hears prayers but also answers them. He said, Call unto me, and I will answer thee (Jeremiah 33:3). Moreover Lord said, “Ask it shall be given, seek you will find and knock it shall be opened” (Matthew 7:7). His assurance of answers to our prayers stands firm (Ephesians 3:20). The efficacy of prayer, from the point of Scriptures, lies solely in the answer to prayer. Moreover, Father is glorified in the Son when the prayers are answered (John 14:13; Psalm 50:15). Furthermore, the Lord Jesus Christ gives very great and precious assurance of granting us what we ask in our prayers, “all things” (Matthew 21:22), “whatsoever” (John 14:13; 1 John 5:15), “anything” (John 14:14; 1 John 5:14), and “what ye will” (John 15:7). The promise of God which usually claimed in prayers is: Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, the world without end. Amen (Ephesians 3:20, 21). This promise speaks of the ability of God in doing exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that is working in us. If that be the case, why does God sometimes not answer our prayers? This very important question is considered in the light of the Scriptures. May the Lord speak and reveal much more on the subject to you as you read on.

Instead of thinking that he has expressed himself too strongly in any of the exhortations he has tendered, he deeply feels, on reviewing the strain of the discourses, that he has spoken faintly and coldly, in comparison with what the vast importance of the duties inculcated demands. Book The Practice of Prayer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Practice of Prayer Classic Reprint written by G. Campbell Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G Campbell Morgan wrote the Practice of Prayer not just to recommend prayer, but a full biblical underpinning to a habit of prayer and an acknowledgement of the Christian doctrine of the omniscient and omnipotent God. In his life-long distinguished career of biblical study Morgan was particularly struck by the passage where the disciples beseech Jesus, 'Lord, teach us to pray'. Reverend Morgan was both insistent that the modern church consider the necessity of wholehearted, faithful prayer and the most appropriate way to achieve it. He believed that the answers were furnished to the faithful by God but that the development of faith, the knowledge of how to pray and even more importantly the appropriate attitude for worship were crucial to righteous worship. In this work he explains his concept of the correct method. Morgan examines each element of the trinity thoughtfully and explains in clear and poetic language the role that each element of the trinity plays in enabling the ideal practice of prayer. He identifies a tantalising human emotionality in Christ, the capacity for mercy in God and the inspiration for prayer that he attributes to the Holy Spirit. He refuses bars to prayer and urges those who would receive the full benefit of prayer to eschew activities that would block them from periods of theological reflection in favour of a more reflective approach to faith. As as prominent teacher, theologian and minister Reverend Morgan's arguments about the ideal approach to the practice and theory of prayer reflect his experience and education, as well as an emotional and moving account of spiritual closeness to God that he felt through prayer. For those seeking to expand the meditative element of their worship this book will linger on in the mind. Download or read book Effectual Prayer written by Edward Norris Kirk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effectual Prayer: A Sermon I. That prayer may prevail with God. This fact is more doubted than denied. Many who affirm it would find, on a close scrutiny, that they in reality disbelieve it. For our belief is controlled and our feelings are deter mined by many propositions which we have never framed into language, and much less accepted on sufh cient evidence. One of these propositions is, that prayer has no tendency to influence God, or, in another form, I shall receive no benefit in answer to prayer. We believe that proposition every day we live without prayer; every time we rise discouraged from prostration in prayer. It becomes us, then, to look closely into the sources of evidence on this very important question: may prayer prevail with God? Or, is it unreasonable to. Expect to receive what we ask from God? And I now affirm, in view of all objections, that there are no valid reasons for doubting that prayer may bring us blessings from God, directly and indirectly, which we should not procure without it. Let us then notice, that all our objections to a full belief in the efficacy of prayer arise from a greater confidence in our own unaided reasonings, and certain intuitive convictions, than in the testimony of God; a vain confidence, by which we make it impossible that God should teach us anything which we cannot know without his instruction. But let me, in this connection, remind you of one or two wholesome facts. The Author of nature has not consulted human wisdom in the arrangement of even material causes. We know that fire consumes wood. But how do we come to know it? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Perfect Prayer How Offered

Download or read book Perfect Prayer How Offered written by Chauncey Giles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perfect Prayer, How Offered: How Answered All the happiness and blessings we enjoy are also the effect of immutable causes. Man was made for happiness. All his faculties of body and spirit are organized to be the subjects of pleasurable sensations and the most exqmsite joys, and all the forms and forces of the material and spirit ual worlds are adjusted to this infinitely complex organiza tion with the most delicate and the most exact precision for the purpose of ministering to human happiness, the essential purpose for which the Lord works. Why, then, should we ask the Lord to do that for ourselves or others which He is in the constant effort to do? He regards us with infinite love now; can any appeal from human lips move Him to an intenser love? He is employing all the means in His infinite power direct-ed by His infinite wisdom for our highest good now; can He be persuaded to do more or better by our importunities? It is impossible in the nature of things. 'vhy, then, should we pray? The answer evidently must be that our asking is one of the means, one link in the chain of causes and effects by which the evil is averted or the good bestowed.
