Indeed, it isn't an exaggeration to say that we assess actions, character, events, and objects as good, cruel, beautiful, etc., almost every day of our lives. Although evaluative judgement - for instance, judging that an institution is unjust - is usually regarded as the paradigm of evaluation, it has been thought by some philosophers that a distinctive and significant kind of evaluation is perceptual. For example, in aesthetics, some have claimed that adequate aesthetic judgement must be grounded in the appreciator's first hand-hand perceptual experience of the item judged. In ethics, reference to the existence and importance of something like ethical perception is found in a number of traditions, for example, in virtue ethics and sentimentalism. This volume brings together philosophers working in aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of mind, and value theory to investigate what we call 'evaluative perception'. Specifically, they engage with (1) Questions regarding the existence and nature of evaluative perception: Are there perceptual experiences of values? If so, what is their nature? Are perceptual experiences of values sui generis? Are values necessary for certain kinds of perceptual experience? (2) Questions about epistemology: Can evaluative perceptual experiences ever justify evaluative judgements? Are perceptual experiences of values necessary for certain kinds of justified evaluative judgements? (3) Questions about value theory: Is the existence of evaluative perceptual experience supported or undermined by particular views in value theory? Are particular views in value theory supported or undermined by the existence of evaluative perceptual experience?

Book excerpt: "Previous research indicates that Helmet Mounted Displays (HMDs) using stereoscopic presentation techniques induce greater Simulator Sickness symptomology than a biocular presentation. However, neither of these presentation methods takes into account the different perspective each eye normally receives as a result of each eye turning to fixate on objects in different depth planes, referred to as vergence movements. The present study examined the effects of a vergence algorithm moderating the stereoscopic display in an HMD in a within subjects comparison to standard stereoscopic and biocular presentations. The experiment used a distance estimation task and the other major variable was incidence of simulator sickness. The experiment task required moving through rooms in a virtual environment and providing distance estimates to different objects. The findings suggest that most participants would recover more easily from simulator sickness symptoms with a vergence viewing condition. However, because this study shows a wide range of individual differences, a vergence adjustment to stereoscopic presentation should not be expected to eliminate the number of participants withdrawing, but only to reduce their number when repeated exposures are involved. Also, the range of individual differences indicates a need for multiple measures of symptomology not only to help identify individuals who are under duress, but to better assess when they have adapted. One candidate measure of duress is dark vergence, based on its objective scaling, its relevance to adaptation, and its correlation with 55 sub-scale scores."--DTIC.

It is so preoccupied with the technology that enables globalisation that little attention is paid to questions of ‘how’ and ‘where’ the circuits of globalisation actually get realised. This book attempts a more nuanced view of globalisation by focusing on its less-explored, non-technological dimensions. It examines the transformation of the woman worker — from a rural woman to an urban one, from a dependent daughter, wife and mother to an earning member, and from a homemaker to a factory worker, and the attendant transformation of the home into a base for migrant workers. None of these transformations is absolute, as the woman worker continues to play the traditional roles of wife and mother at home alongside fulfilling her responsibilities at work. In the process of negotiating boundaries in the village, city, home, and global factory, she confronts a reality that she fears because of its unfamiliarity, coping with which necessarily entails falling back on her kin networks — institutions that are rarely seen as enablers of globalisation, although they play a critical role in determining how globalisation is sustained. Focusing on such workers in Bangalore, a city otherwise known for its IT industry, the book examines the global garment circuit, especially the institutions and processes outside the workplace that influence how the global circuit is completed. It will appeal to those in economics, sociology, gender studies, urban studies, as well as to those interested in issues relating to globalisation.
