Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TO THE MODEL EVALUATION 1. MODELLING SOIL EROSION BY WATER l 2 John Boardman and David Favis-Mortlock 1 School of Geography and Environmental Change Unit Mansfield Road University of Oxford Oxford OX1 3TB UK 2 Environmental Change Unit University of Oxford 5 South Parks Road Oxford OX1 3UB UK Introduction This volume is the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop 'Global Change: Modelling Soil Erosion by Water', which was held on II-14th September 1995, at the University of Oxford, UK. The meeting was also one of a series organised by the IGBP 1 GCTE Soil Erosion Network, which is a component of GCTE's Land Degradation Task (3.3.2) (Ingram et aI., 1996; Valentin, this volume). One aim of the GCTE Soil Erosion Network is to evaluate the suitability of existing soil erosion models for predicting the possible impacts of global change upon soil erosion. Due to the wide range of erosion models currently, in use or under development, it was decided to evaluate models in the following sequence Favis-Mortlock et al., 1996): • field-scale water erosion models • catchmenr-scale water erosion models • wind erosion models • models with a landscape-scale and larger focus. As part of this strategy, the first stage of the GCTE validation of field-scale erosion models was carried out at the Oxford NATO-ARW. I A list of Acronyms fonns Appendix A.

Book Industrial Minerals of Northern Ontario

Download or read book Industrial Minerals of Northern Ontario written by M. A. Vos and published by Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines. This book was released on 1987 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circular describing industrial mineral deposits, excluding aggregates, of northern Ontario (north and west of the Grenville Front). Information was compiled in 1979-81 through literature search of publications and files int he Toronto offices of the Ontario Geological Survey and the Offices of Regional and Resident Geologists. Deposit descriptions are listed by National Topographic System location, in numerical order, then compass order (northwest, northeast, southwest, southeast), then alphabetical order by commodity and deposit name. The name assigned to the deposit is that by which the deposit is commonly known or it is a reference to the company which holds the claim or did work on the deposit. For each deposit, location is given, by the NTS number and by latitude and longitude. Descriptive remarks are also given.

Download or read book Tensile Fracturing in Rocks written by Dov Bahat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-31 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Tensile Fracturing in Rocks’ presents field observations on fracturing of sedim- tary rocks and granite outcrops from various provinces in three continents. It also combines results of recent experiments conducted at different laboratories around the world with current theories on fracturing. In treating faults, this book limits itself to faults that are associated with joint sets produced by definable causes and occasi- ally to cases where interaction between the two types of fracture – faults and joints – is not clear. The book’s subject matter is divided over six chapters, which are briefly described below. Chapter 1 summarizes current key concepts in fracture physics. It starts with a pr- entation of the elastic theory of fracture, and concentrates on the results of linear el- tic fracture mechanics. The chapter touches also upon other fracture properties, e.g., crack nucleation, dynamic fracturing and slow fracturing processes. Nucleation is - dressed by statistical mechanics methods incorporating modern approaches of th- mal and fiber bundle processes. The analyses of dynamic fracturing and slow fract- ing focus on the differences, as compared to the linear elastic approach. The cont- versy in interpreting experimental dynamic results is highlighted, as are the surface morphology patterns that emerge in fracturing and the non-Griffith crack extension criterion in very slow fracturing processes.
