Book excerpt: READ 180 is a comprehensive reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of elementary to middle school students whose reading achievement is below the proficient level. The program directly addresses individual needs through differentiated instruction, adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. Stage A provides tools for young struggling readers in elementary school to develop critical literacy skills. Stage B provides middle school struggling readers with topics designed for their level of reading that hold their interest. System 44 was designed for the most challenged, older struggling readers, and helps these students understand that the English language is a finite system of 44 sounds and 26 letters that can be mastered. It uses validated assessment for screening and placement, research-based phonics instruction and highly motivating and age-appropriate adaptive technology.

Book The Effects of the Achieve3000 Program on Ninth Grade Students Reading and Writing Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of the Achieve3000 Program on Ninth Grade Students Reading and Writing Achievement written by Kevin Tyree Dyson and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated whether the use of the Achieve3000 differentiated online reading program significantly impacted ninth-grade student achievement. It also examined the perceptions students and teachers have about using the online textbook as a resource intervention. Even with statistical evidence displaying that Achieve3000 impacted student achievement, students, and teachers perceive there to be better alternatives than using the online textbook as a resource. Yet, both surveyed groups prodigiously believed being a good reader is beneficial post-secondary. The descriptive and inferential statistics results showed Achieve3000 significantly impacted student achievement, and the results displayed a significant interaction with students that had Individualized Educational Programs. However, the growth of the non-Response to Intervention students and the Response to Intervention Students did not change.

Book The Effects of Literacy Interventions on Reading Scores for Low achieving Students

Download or read book The Effects of Literacy Interventions on Reading Scores for Low achieving Students written by Angela Jayroe Mulkana and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As America’s schools strive to educate a diverse population of students, some of these students, who are identified as low-achieving, find school to be difficult. The need to improve low-achieving students’ reading skills has been the focus and concern of educators for many years. This study, which utilized a causal comparative research design, investigated third and fourth grade students’ literacy achievement scores for participation or non-participation in the Students Reading Enrichment Program (SREP), which is an in-school and/or after-school program, in the Jenkins School District (JSD). The SREP provides low-achieving students the opportunity to work in small groups with interventionists, teachers, and tutors who offer structured support based on each student’s ability level. The purpose of the study was to determine if the SREP in-school and after-school programs affected student achievement in Grades 3 and 4. Students’ MCT2 and STAR Reading scores were statistically examined. Existing data from a convenience sample of students were used. A multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) and Pearson correlations were used to answer the research questions for this study. The independent variables for the study were: (a) level of participation, (b) grade level, (c) sex, and (d) attendance. The dependent or treatment variable, Reading Achievement, was comprised of students’ reading scaled scores on MCT2 and STAR Reading. No statistically significant differences were found to indicate that reading interventions affected student achievement in Grades 3 and 4. Recommendations for future research include: (a) conducting longitudinal studies to determine long term effects on students attending in-school and after-school programs over the remaining four years of the SREP, (b) analyzing other variables such as classroom teachers, in-school interventionists, after-school teachers, and after-school tutors, (c) investigating the unique contribution that each of these variables has on student achievement, (d) comparing data for the interventionists who are certified teachers and the interventionists who are not certified teachers, and (e) examining the professional development of classroom teachers, in-school interventionists, after-school teachers, and after-school tutors.

Book The Effect of a Tier Two Literacy Intervention on Student Achievement in an Urban High School in Northeast Louisiana

Download or read book The Effect of a Tier Two Literacy Intervention on Student Achievement in an Urban High School in Northeast Louisiana written by Dina Catherine Garb and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research indicated that many students entering middle and high school read below grade level. This quantitative study attempted to address the problem of low-income African American students from northeast Louisiana entering ninth grade with low reading skills. The purpose of this ex post facto study was to investigate the effects of a Response to Intervention (RtI) Tier 2 literacy intervention on the academic achievement of ninth grade students reading below grade level. The research was grounded in Bloom's mastery learning theory and Dewey's child-centered learning theory. The research question was whether students that completed the literacy intervention performed better on the ninth grade state-mandated assessment than students who did not receive the intervention. The secondary data used in this ex post facto study were the ninth grade iLEAP ELA (integrated Louisiana Educational Assessment Program) scores as measures for the dependent variable. Students who completed the literacy intervention did not score significantly higher on the iLEAP ELA. These results indicated that the intervention that was evaluated in this study was not effective with the population involved in this research. The findings point to the need for alternative literacy interventions that may have to be customized for student populations with different remediation needs.

Book The Effects of a Reading Intervention Program on the Achievement of Seventh grade Students After One Year of Participation

Download or read book The Effects of a Reading Intervention Program on the Achievement of Seventh grade Students After One Year of Participation written by Allison Shaw and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators are constantly looking for ways to motivate students to become better readers and able to access all core curricula. One way schools and districts try to improve the reading skills of struggling readers is through intervention programs. The data selected for analysis were derived from seventh-grade students who participated in a reading intervention program. Participating students engaged daily in the Journeys reading program, which is designed for those who struggle in reading. This supplemental program was used outside of the core English language arts (ELA) program and occurred every day for a full year. Students were provided direct explicit instruction using 45 minute routines in whole-group and small group settings as well as computer based instruction. A paired sample t-test was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference between the means of pre- and post-test district benchmark scores after one full year of receiving instruction in the supplemental Journeys reading program. Another paired sample t-test was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference in the core ELA grade point average (GPA) of seventh-grade students after one full year of receiving instruction in the supplemental Journeys reading program. An alpha level of .05 was used to determine statistical significance. The analysis of the benchmark scores suggested that participation in the Journeys reading program may have a positive impact on reading comprehension.

Book The Effects of the READ 180 Reading Intervention Program on the Achievement of Fourth and Fifth Grade Students

Download or read book The Effects of the READ 180 Reading Intervention Program on the Achievement of Fourth and Fifth Grade Students written by Sarah Escobedo-Popuch and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a strong focus on student achievement and test scores in the public schools of California. Educators continue to identify low reading scores as evidence of many students struggling to achieve grade level standards. Reading intervention programs have been introduced to elementary schools to assist struggling readers. This study investigated the effects of the READ 180 reading intervention program on the reading achievement of fourth and fifth grade English Learners and fourth and fifth grade English Only students at two elementary schools. The Reading Inventory (RI) was administered twice, to establish baseline data for the first academic quarter, and at the end of the fourth academic quarter, to determine if changes in achievement occurred between the pretest and posttest. Through paired samples t-tests, this author found that there was significant change in the reading achievement of fourth and fifth grade English Learners and fourth and fifth grade English Only students. This study suggests that students may significantly improve reading skills when participating in the READ 180 reading intervention program. Keywords: READ 180, reading intervention, English Learners.

Book excerpt: EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH “I wrote the book for students who are learning how to be consumers of research, as well as for those who will be planning their own research project. To be a successful researcher you need a variety of skills. You need to become a critical reader of published work, to learn about research methods and design – and to be able to put what you learn to use.” Dr. Ken Springer, Southern Methodist University Clearly organized, well-written, and user-friendly, this text provides a comprehensive look at quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches to research. The first six chapters introduce educational research methods, the second six chapters focus on quantitative design and analysis, while the final six chapters cover qualitative, mixed-methods, and applied research. The comprehensive approach of this textbook is supplemented by extensive coverage of topics such as research ethics, program evaluation, and statistical analysis. Several characteristics provide students with a meaningful context for the material: Each chapter features three “Spotlight on Research” sections consisting of a lengthy excerpt from a recently published study. Discussions of research studies throughout the text provide additional context for the material. Each chapter helps students apply newly acquired knowledge through features such as end-of-chapter exercises as well as the section, “Applications: A guide for the beginning researcher.” The book’s companion website provides both students and instructors with additional resources, including a Study Guide, a Resource Guide (including links to full-text articles), and an Instructor’s Manual and Test Bank.
