Book NAFTA and the Environment

Download or read book NAFTA and the Environment written by Seymour J. Rubin and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-09-25 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents various perspectives on the environmental aspects of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), including the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC). Among the issues discussed are the environmental regulations of the NAFTA nations and Chile, as well as the environmental implications of conducting cross-border business. These topics are addressed in an interdisciplinary manner, focusing on legal, economic, social, political and scientific issues, with contributions from American, Canadian, Mexican and Chilean authors. The book is invaluable as it provides a broad outlook on multifaceted environmental issues in a single volume. This book is the third volume in our NAFTA Law and Policy series, which offers high-quality studies on different aspects of NAFTA, including legal analysis and commentary on the Agreement. The numerous areas covered by the series include NAFTA topics as diverse as agriculture, dispute settlement, intellectual property rights, investment and labour.

Book NAFTA and the Environment

Download or read book NAFTA and the Environment written by Gary Clyde Hufbauer and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 2000 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air and water pollution blighted northern Mexican cities long before the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was a glimmer on the political horizon. Not surprisingly, when NAFTA became a political reality, environmentalists argued that commercial competition would weaken environmental standards in Canada and the United States and industrial growth in Mexico would further damage its weak environmental infrastructure. NAFTA's huge success in expanding free trade has concentrated population and environmental abuse at the US-Mexico border where it is most visible to Americans. Many environmental groups blame NAFTA and, drawing on its experience, now oppose new trade initiatives.Does the NAFTA record on the environment since 1994 justify its criticism? In this seven-year analysis, the authors review NAFTA's environmental provisions, including a side accord--the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC), the situation at the US-Mexican border, and the trends in North American environmental policy. They emphasize that the environmental problems of North America were not the result of NAFTA and the NAAEC was not devised to address all of them. The authors recommend ways to better NAFTA's environmental dimension in all three countries, and improve living conditions where economic growth is greatest--at the US-Mexican border. It makes more sense to tackle the shortcomings than to lament NAFTA and the economic growth it promotes.

Book The Greening of US Free Trade Agreements

Download or read book The Greening of US Free Trade Agreements written by Linda Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date critical analysis of the integration of environmental policies into US free trade agreements. The work focuses on the evolution of the design of environmental policies and analyzes their effectiveness. Starting with the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) leading to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the book examines the history of policy integration. In doing so, it provides an overview of the major trade-related environmental policies and presents empirical research on their effectiveness, a discussion of the continued demand for policy integration in light of the effectiveness, and recommendations for addressing shortcomings. The main objective of the book is to inform the ongoing policy debate over integration of environmental policies into trade agreements. The current renegotiation of NAFTA provides an opportune time for undertaking this critical review of trade-related environmental policies. As our understanding and knowledge of the environmental policies associated with US trade agreements, in particular for NAFTA, has grown significantly over the past twenty-five years, this book provides a timely and critical update for this policy debate. Students and scholars of environmental law, trade and economics, and specifically US trade, environmental policy and law will find this book of great interest.
